Engine swap
Hello all, I just put my mercury tower of power up for sale and I did this so I may be able to upgrade the mercury 165 on the HiLiner 222 does anyone know what I can replace the 165 with I want to keep it inboard out board, I’m thinking something along the chris craft or sea ray Line might have a direct bolt in mercury. Any help greatly appreciated.

I saw a post not here that suggests that a mercury 4.3 l would go with my Altima and bolt right up is anyone knowledgeable about this and can help me

The 165 is an inline 6 motor...not matter what you go to, anything other than another inline 6 will require you to do a bit of work to retrofit it. New motor mounts...new bell-housing to bolt up to transom assembly, possibly different wiring harness etc....its not going to be a direct swap and call it a day kind of situation....

Ok cool so stay with an in-line six, bayliner ran with inline sixes in the 90s right.

Hey Wally any suggestions as to what motor I should be looking at I wanna stay in the 2000.00 range

This is some information.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevro...aight-6_engine |
Thanks for the info but that information was about straight 6 engines for cars and trucks I’m in the market for an in-line 6 marine engine that I won’t have to research and find parts to transfer into a vehicle case to make it marine ready.

Finding a donor engine could be a challenge, especially if you want more power. In the automotive world the straight six is a great power plant, lots of torque but don't spin it too high. If you are selling the existing engine to increase the power, you will probably need to look to the automotive side for upgrade options. I don't think too many people in the marine world have done much hp improvements to them since the 70's if even then.
Or you could be really outside the box and a bit nuts and put a turbo on the existing engine and see if you can destroy the drive! |
Another dumb question earlier I was calling the lower end an Altima why I couldn’t remember Alfa one outdrive, but anyways back to the dumb question the gas has been sitting in the boat for about two years I was told, the gas gauge says that it is three quarters full I’m not sure with the tank being that full if I really need to drain it and change it, and if I do need to do so would anyone have a guesstimate on how many gallons a 22’ boat would hold?

Gotcha https://www.michiganmotorz.com/inlin...963-p-546.html. |
Ya I wouldn’t try running that fuel, about all it’s good for is cleaning parts. I would just hook the feed line to another hose and run it out the bilge drain hole. Start filling containers, once one is full pinch line with vise grips to stop the flow

Dumbest thread I've ever read. No offense

Almost as bad as the commercial canal striped bass fishing post .

This has got to be a joke or this is an official sign that OSO is on its death bed.....

No offense MA but these forums are dedicated to offshore performance boats. This crowd normally talk stern racing motors (i.e. 525’s, 700’s, etc) and occasionally performance outboards.
questions regarding 6 cylinder 2.7L and alpha drives are foreign to us. I would recommend other boat forums (I.e. iboats, hulltruth, etc) or Facebook. Again don’t take this the wrong way. Not trying to a d-bag. But this probably isn’t the right place. Good luck. Hope you find the info your are looking for... |
Sell the boat the way it is and get something else with a newer more powerful engine. You will be lignt years ahead labor and $ wise.
