Race and win two World Championships in Destin
#1
This year's World Championship in Destin will be an event that unites boats from OPA, POPRA, and OSS. Different sanctioning bodies, different race formats, one great racing week.
The OSS (Offshore Super Series) boats will race on Thursday, November 9 and Sunday, November 12, starting at 12 noon and continue until 4:00 pm. The races are scheduled for 12 noon, 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm. Testing for these boats will be on Tuesday, November 7 and Friday, November 10, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. The races are scheduled for 11 am, 1 pm. and 3 pm.
The OPA (Offshore Performance Association) and POPRA (Pacific Offshore Performance Racing Association boats will race on Wednesday, November 9 and Saturday, November 11, starting at 1 pm and again at 2:30 pm.
And you can race them all!
OPA invites the OSS boats to race in the OPA/POPRA races in Destin. The OPA races are open to any boat that meets the simple requirements listed below.
Likewise, OSS invites all OPA/POPRA boats that meet the OSS requirements to race at the OSS races in Destin.
The OPA requirements are as follows:
1. All OPA boats must be registered with OPA (by Tues in Destin) and pay the 2006 registration fee of $500 per boat and $100 per riding crew member. There are no race entry fees.
2. All OPA boats must have the proper GPS system for scoring. See www.oparacing.com and click the GPS link for ordering and installation details.
3. All OPA boats must attend the OPA drivers meetings.
4. All boats racing with OPA must have the correct numbers for scoring.
Class 1 - Up to 115mph - the hull numbers go from 100 - 199
Class 2 - Up to 105mph - the hull numbers go from 200 - 299
Class 3 - Up to 95 mph - the hull numbers go from 300 - 399
Class 4 - Up to 85 mph - the hull numbers go from 400 - 499
No OSS boats will fit into Class 5 or Class 6.
It would work like this.
Cat Lite would fit into Class 1
Cat O/B and Vee boats would run in - Class 2
Vee lite - Class 3 top speed 95 or they can prop down and run in Class 4 with a top speed of 85mph.
Since OSS is offering the Extreme Class, OPA will not offer that class.
It doesn't look like the Extreme, Turbine or Cat boats would fit into OPA, but Cat Lite and everything else fits fine.
All boats running with OPA will run for OPA's $50,000+ purse.
The OSS Requirements are as follows:
1. To qualify for the OSS World Championship, the boat must have participated in a minimum of two offshore events sanctioned by any nationally or world recognized sanctioning body between January 1 and November 1 of the current racing year. The same driver and/or throttleman must have competed in the same hull (or a hull that qualifies under Rule 27, Section C of these rules) in the same or equivalent class in which they are entered at the world championship event.
2. Only classes currently defined in the OSS rules shall be eligible to compete for OSS World Championship titles.
