Pro-Am Racing in LOTO

OSS will be making Pro-Am racing available at all races during the 2009 racing season. (similar to P-Class Racing - using average lap speeds instead of onboard GPS units.)

We have some teams that want to race in LOTO so we'll make these new classes available to anyone that wants to race in Lake of the Ozarks - Sept 26 - 28.

For more info, send me an email or call. This is a premier race site, as anyone that was there last year!!!

Thanks

Hey Ron -

What's the cost (fees) involved to run P-class at just the LOTO event this year?

Ron P 09-12-2008 04:34 PM

The entire entry fee is $500 and $400 of it will be paid back to the winners as a purse.

Originally POPRA was supposed to come and run the P Classes, but they can't make it so since we have some local teams that still want to come, so OSS will offer the classes directly from now on.

It's pretty late in the season for me but I would be very interested in penciling in some races next summer if budget and time permits. But a couple questions

Are you doing this next season at each event?

Do all OSS Rules apply? Allot of us "P" class racers are pretty laid back, I should say I know I am and after reading the OSS rule book I think I would get chased out of town at the first event.

Would the purse always be $400 first only or would it be restructured to pay more if more boats show up to race?

What GPS units are being used? Do we need to purchase new units?

Ron P 09-12-2008 11:31 PM

Yes, we'll have Pro-Am racing at all OSS events next year.

Yes all OSS General Racing Rules apply. Just be at the meetings on time and blow a 0.0 on the breathalizer. Other things aren't too strict. We are very safety conscience and you'll find we run things on time and do what we say we are going to do.

We'll come up with a purse structure next year. The $400 is just a quick solution to this one race. We might even get a few sponsor dollars to bump the purse for LOTO.

NO GPS units. We'll use our scoring software to determine average lap speeds.

TYPHOON 09-13-2008 09:21 AM

Ron could you explain how the average lap scoring is done. Will they race Sat.? How many classes?
Get the word out on the lake at LOTO to the local boaters. I will bring my extra set of jackets and helmets. Maybe some of the other OSS teams have spare Jackets and helmets they could bring as well. They seem to be the hardest things to get together for new people giving it a try.
If anyone needs anything just ask.

R.P.M. Magazine 09-13-2008 09:59 AM

Sounds like a great idea...

Ron P 09-13-2008 10:58 AM

We'll use average lap speeds. Our scoring system automatically calculates lap speeds each time a boat passes the start finish line. This way you don't need to mess around with GPS units.

Bob Teague, out technical chairman is making some final tweaks to the rules. Then I'll post them. Average Lap speeds go from 65 to 95mph.

svl104 09-13-2008 10:15 PM

we have 2 extra helmets and 2 lifeline vests too we will bring.

backto'03? 09-13-2008 10:52 PM

is pro am like p-class or 100 -600 bracket racing in the opa , sbi ? no more singular kindof stuff like just one kinda boat but 20 of 'em /
whats playing in petersburg fla the website doesnt say little boats

TYPHOON 09-14-2008 09:30 AM

Are some of you POPRA teams coming? Had a blast with you all last year.

TYPHOON 09-14-2008 09:40 AM

The Pro-Am class will be an addition to the regular Spec class teams. It will give local high performance boaters a secured safe inviroment to go out and test there boat and skill. The goal is to get new people involved in the sport and not be intimidated. It seems there are tons of people that would love to try this sport but just are not ready to make the big jump into a full blown pure race boat. THIS IS FOR YOU!!!

racesdad 09-14-2008 01:27 PM

we will bring our lifelines too. orange duct tape on regular helmet works too. doesnt it mark and jenni?:angry-smiley-038:

And thats the attitude and we need to help this sport grow !!

TYPHOON 09-14-2008 03:03 PM

Just a thought. Possibly a $100 entry fee and no purse might draw more people. That seems to work better on a class at this level. The purse is less important than the experience.

Ron, copy this post to the General area as well. Not everyone reads the racing threads. Spread the word.

svl104 09-15-2008 09:26 AM

are there other websites that it could be posted on too?

MOBILEMERCMAN 09-15-2008 10:50 AM

I copied first page on Boatfreaks.

Aqua Banshee 09-15-2008 12:43 PM

How about a list of the basic requirements. I know last year we bought, and did a lot of things that really were not needed, but were in the popra rule book. I know there are not a lot of retired race boats in the midwest to drag out, but maybe some pleasure guys wanting to try.

Ron P 09-15-2008 12:49 PM

The basics are jackets, helmets and padding on the windshield frame and exposed cleats. Oh, and racing numbers!

2 Trick Rick 09-15-2008 02:02 PM

So is safe to assume if any "p" class boat has competed in OPA or SBI this year they are good to race?

heater63 09-15-2008 07:29 PM

I love the idea,Lets all help make it happen.Anybody need anything, dont be afraid to ask.

Yes, that's correct. Plus it looks like we'll have some first time racers too.

The Pro-Am race will also have full safety and medical on the water and in the air.

So "First time "racers in your'e opinion have more right to be in a RACE atmosphere than " POKER RUNNER's " who do 5 to 6 events a season ? You Know the ones you tore the hell out of !!

Are You the same guy who wrote all those safety articles ? I ,m beginning to doubt it .

Im not sure what a top speed will be in a Pro -Am class but I bet its not more than a 120 mph in a open cockpit. A totaly different enviroment than a Poker Run.

OPA Strongly encorages lids in class 1 (115mph max) I'm not sure about SBI.

MOBILEMERCMAN 09-16-2008 11:00 AM

I read the top average speed bracket was 95mph.

TYPHOON 09-16-2008 01:35 PM

95 MPH average lap speed is plenty fast.

BigSilverCat 09-24-2008 10:01 PM

this sounds like fun, I will be bringing the cigarette up and race, it is 36' and has n/a engines. should run 80 something.

maybe we could bring dennis skater up and run all but the last lap at 160 then on the last lap pull over and get something to drink then go finish and enter it in the 65 mph class.?
