To increase racers reason for showing at every race an organization puts on I think the National Title need to be played up MUCH,MUCH MORE.
I would propose to take 1/3 of the purse of each class and put it in escrow for a payout at the end of the season to be paid to the top 3 teams in each class. as an example in OSS if you took $4,000 x 7 races= $28,000 to be divided up in each class. A check for $14,000 for 1st place is worth going to every race to stay in the points hunt. In reality many teams have won National titles with out ever winning a single race all year. Most of the time the recipients of the money will be the teams that are best prepared and constantly there.

I don't see how that's possible at OSS. At OSS, the National Champion is determined by the annual points total, with the proviso that the Nationals must be attended to win.

I think the purse is a good idea. We can implement this at OSS with a simple vote.

Bertel,I think what Randy is trying to say is that consistency wins National Championships.Theoretically a team can place high in every race and not win a race all year and accumulate the most points by showing up and finishing the races.Maybe other teams win a couple of races but do not finish all of the races and their point total be less than the team that finished all the races.I hope you got this because I am getting confused.Back to the subject at hand,I think is a great idea because it will give the points race another real reason for teams to be as prepared as possible.Bertel,I am in for that vote.

It is very possible to win an overall championship buy not winning any races in a year..... We are currently in 2nd place in P5 OPA and have not won a race. We consistently race about 7-8 boats which makes it anyones game. I love the idea...but.... it would not work in OPA because the money is just not there. If I am correct the winners from the last three races only won $500 each.....basically getting your entry fees back. So if you take a third of that then your left with like $350....less than the entry fees. Otherwise I think it is a great idea...

Great thread, Bruce and I have won equal races this year and the leader in points just shows up and gets second and third or fourth because they attend all races. I give them alot of credit for putting alot of $$$$ out to travel everywhere and participate in the sport. However, if the purse was bigger I would make arrangements to race at any venue hands down. I`m having a blast in SBI this year and hope they make it more exciting next year.

What happened in the Great Lakes that people didnt want a piece of $20,000?
And what Im talking about is close to $28,000 per class! In SVL there are 3 boats that are battleing hard for 2nd place in the points hunt. If there was a purse for 2nd of $10,000 I would think every team would show up no matter how there boat was running.

Willie, as per http://www.offshoresuperseries.com/Points.shtml , you are the most consistent in OSSVL with 4 consecutive #1 finishes. You lead the pack with a well deserved and hard earned 100 points. Go on like this (and you will) and the OSS Nationals will be yours even if you break down in JAX (which will never happen, you are too methodical.)

You are right, consistency wins Natioanl Championships. You and Larry also are living proof that consistency (combined with a lot of skill and gumption) wins the race.

Theoretically, it might be possible to become a National Champ without winning a single race. But this year and in OSSVL, it's not going to happen. Also, as the table above shows, ALL boats in OSSVL had one or more podium finishes. Most importantly, all boats in OSSVL are consistent and committed. Thank you.

A quick look at http://www.offshoresuperseries.com/Points.shtml shows that the Krazy Kubans lead with 414 points. The rest of the pack is 100 points back.

There are two more races at OSS, including the Nationals. Even if the Kubans break down during every race (a silly assumption), they have 414 + 74 + 74 points and a total of 562. Even if one team of the following pack would win all two of the coming races, they would have 314 ( or 313) + 104 + 104 points, and a total of 522. Not enough to beat the Krazy Kubans.

The only way for the Kubans to not win the Nationals is not to race one of the following two races. And that won't happen either.

I for one want to break that winning streak!

Bertel,you are correct about our class being committed and I think Randy's idea of a purse for the top three places in the Nationals would give an extra incentive to show up at all the races.It is a long season and you need a lot of luck to finish every race but overall the team that works the hardest should have a better chance to win the Nationals.I could just image if #5 Wild Ride would have been racing since Beloxi,it would have made all the teams work a little harder I think.We are excited for next year,I think our class will get bigger and stronger.We have a great group of guys,that truly enjoy each others company.Now,I am way off the subject.Anyway,I think Randy is on to something and I hope it Can be done.
