Dateline August 31, St. Clair, Michigan, Sea Quest Kids just finished participation in the largest regular season Offshore Power Boat race event of the 2006 season. The OSS (Offshore Super Series) and the OPA (Offshore Performance Association) combined to produce a stellar event. Only three weeks before the Sea Quest Kids had done a training session for the Children’s Recreation Committee (CRC). No sooner had they finished training when they landed a spot to build boats in the highlight regular race event of for 2006.
Jim and Sue Bockstanz who are on the Board of the Bluewater Offshore Racing Association have been familiar with the Sea Quest Kids program for about five years and have wanted to see an active local Sea Quest Kids group. Now that the CRC of St. Clair has been trained, all systems were go to build during the St. Clair River Classic Offshore Power Boat Race.
About fifteen kids participated in building two Sea Quest 100s. One boat was named after the Reliable Super Cat whose team is commanded by Reliable Trucking owner Tom Abrams. The kids who led the building of the Sea Quest Kids Reliable Sea Quest 100 were the grandchildren of Jim and Sue Bockstanz, Gabby and AJ Nocifora. Their team was rounded out by Austin Kromroy and Kalvin Zimmerman.
The second boat was named after team Konrad. This Sea Quest Kids boat building team was led by Taylor Raleigh, whose Dad, Lee Raleigh is the throttleman for Konrad Racing. Taylor was partnered with Nick whose last name we didn’t get because he never finished filling out the registration form because he was so excited about joining in on the boat building. There were also a number of other kids who dropped in and out of the boat building during Friday and Saturday.
Said Lee Raleigh, “Sea Quest Kids has changed my daughter’s life, really! Building the Sea Quest 100 has been a phenomenal experience for Taylor! She is totally charged up to do more Sea Quest Kids activities! What else do you have going on?” Sea Quest Kids Fearless Leader, Steve Gronka replied, “This is the most important part. Now that Taylor has the boat we will have organized ongoing activity including paddle races, rowing races, sailing races, waterway cleanups, work with colleges and universities doing aquaculture programs, public speaking, showing Sea Quest Boats at Boat Shows, and more. Lee Raleigh said, “Let me know how I can help, I am ready to volunteer!”
Two Sea Quest Kids races were held on Saturday evening. The first was the Bluewater Offshore Racing Sea Quest Kids 1st Annual Challenge Cup. Sea Quest Kids Reliable squared off with Sea Quest Kids Konrad and one of the boats built in a prior boat building session three weeks before. First place went to Taylor Raleigh and her team Konrad. Taylor also won the draw for ownership of the boat she helped to build.
The second race event was the Sea Quest Kids Racers’ Challenge which teamed Offshore Race Team members with Sea Quest Kids boat builders. Mike McManus of Team Bounty Hunter stepped in for Tom Abrams to help Gabby and AJ with the Sea Quest Kids Team Reliable. Mike McManus paddled with wife Carol and son Brett McManus aka Monkey Wrench. Rounding out the foursome was Katy Livingston of Grosse Ile. Lee Raleigh and Bryan Bunch paddled with Taylor and Nick in the Sea Quest Kids Konrad Sea Quest 100. The winner was Sea Quest Kids Reliable which brought home a first place for Gabby, AJ, Austin, and Kalvin. Gabby and AJ won the draw for the boat they helped to build.
The fun and excitement of Sea Quest Kids drew the attention of Race Directors from Orange, Beach Alabama and Destin, Florida. Destin is the site of OSS World Championships in November. Look for Sea Quest Kids at more OSS events.
