Life Jackets to Teach Safety at Tampa Boat Show

Sea Tow Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner Stations Make Third Straight Appearance

TAMPA, Fla. – The Sea Tow Foundation – a national nonprofit dedicated to the education and awareness of safe boating practices – has joined arms with industry leaders as it aims to spread a message of safe, fun boating at this year’s Progressive Tampa Boat Show.

For the third straight year, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Onyx and the Sea Tow Foundation are partnering to set up Life Jacket Loaner Stations that will supply more than 200 life jackets to show attendees when the event comes to the Tampa Convention Center Sept. 7-9. These life jackets will be available for children and adults visiting the show to borrow, use and return as they explore the boats and yachts docked at the show – all free of charge. The stations will hold life jackets in all sizes – from infant to adult XL.

“One of the first things taught in a boating safety class is the importance of safety, both on the water and before leaving the dock,” said Gail R. Kulp, executive director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “No one intends to end up in the water, but sometimes it just happens; and that’s why we’re here. By providing free life jackets that show attendees can borrow, we can help instill a lifelong message about the importance of always keeping safety first whenever boaters are in or around the water.”

Kulp added that the program will be especially beneficial to families, as it provides a valuable learning experience to young boaters, in particular.

“We want to educate as many people as we can – especially young children – about the importance of wearing a life jacket anytime they are around the water,” Kulp said. “By having a Life Jacket Loaner Station available for attendees, we can show families how to ensure a life jacket fits properly and that life jackets are comfortable enough to wear all day.”

The life jackets provided at the Tampa Boat Show are part of the Sea Tow Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner Program – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Through the program, the boating safety nonprofit has set up more than 450 loaner stations across the United States, allowing boaters to borrow a life jacket for free when heading out for a boating trip with friends and family.

“Families and children looking for extra security can find a life jacket that fits to use when on the docks, then return it for someone else to use when they are done,” Kulp said. “Then, after they leave the show and head back to their local waters, they can stop by one of our other Life Jacket Loaner Stations and do the same for their next family outing.”

Sea Tow Foundation
With a focus on safe boating practices that result in fun on the water, the Sea Tow Foundation – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – was established in 2007 by Sea Tow Founder Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer. After his passing in 2015, Captain Joe’s legacy continues as the Foundation brings attention to the number of preventable boating-related accidents, injuries, and deaths, and directly addresses prevention methods through education and awareness. More than 450 life jacket loaner stands are now available across the United States and the Foundation’s Designate a Sober Skipper program continues to grow.
