Heading to Cambridge Today
Some of The Boyz are heading down to Cambridge today to prepare
the little sleepy town for the crazies that will be showing up for the next two days. Guy's, we have a wedding
going on Sunday, we have to chill for one hour between races. HOW MUCH FUC$ING TROUBLE
DO YOU THINK WE CAN WE GET IN DURING THAT HOUR. Man, it's gonna be great, WEDDINGS, BOAT RACERS, ,
STEAKS WITH HOBOKEN EDDIE SAUCES AND GOOD FRIENDS. It Don't Get Any Better That That! Everyone be safe
going down (or up), and we'll see you Friday.

We will be there in a few hours, but unfortunately without the boat.
The day of the races here in OC we had an engine running a little rough right before the start of the race. It was running fine that morning, but when we fired it up to head out for the race it was missing and popping. Anyhow, we thought that it was a carb problem and tried to adjust it out without any luck. Since there wasn't any tapping or knocking and the USCG and all of the race boats were ready to roll out and waiting on us, we decided to run it anyway.
After the race it was still missing a little bit, but there was absolutely no tapping or knocking, so we thought that it was still a carb problem. Well, we got on it over this past weekend and rebuilt the carbs on that engine. There was a little debris in them, but overall they were not too bad. We put the carbs back on on Monday and had the same problem. So now we figure that it is a valve adjustment. We took a look at the valves and found an intake and an exhaust valve really loose on one cylinder. We adjusted those valves and the rest on both engines, put it back together and fired it up only to have the same problem, but now with a little knocking noise.
Again we pulled it back apart to take a look. The valves were still fine so we decided to look deeper. We took the valvetrain apart and found that the push rods on the cylinder that had the loose valves were bent. They came out easily considering how badly they were bent, but there didn't appear to be any damage to the head. So, we got a set of push rods sent out overnight on Tuesday and installed them yesterday. We put everything back together and fired it up yesterday to find the knocking noise still there and the engine still popping and missing. So now we need to go deeper to find the problem.
I am hoping that the damage is just in the cam and/or lifters, but we are out of time to find out before the Red Eyes run tomorrow.
You know, these engines have been no problem at all over the last few years and I have to say that this problem is absolutely my fault. We usually adjust the valves at every other oil change (50 hours or so), but I did not do it this last time when I should have, just before the OC races. For lack of time I figured to come back and do it between the races in OC and the Red Eyes run. My fault and now it has come back to haunt me!
Anyhow, lessons learned. Lesson number 1: Don't ever wait on the valve adjustment no matter what. Lesson number 2: when bad parts are found in the engine, keep digging until you get to good parts so that you don't waste time assembling and disassembling the engine over and over. Lesson number 3: Don't ever tell this boat that it is going to Cambridge because it doesn't seem to want to go there. Last year the cracked gimbal ring and now this! I guess that I am lucky that these are the only problems I have had over the past few years, but I am unlucky with the timing of these problems.
So to sum up this mess, we will be up and running soon, but we will not have the boat in Cambridge this weekend. Sorry guys.
