High speed due on Choptank
CAMBRIDGE — Large crowds are expected this weekend for the National Championship Off Shore Powerboat Races, being held this weekend on the Choptank River in front of the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort.
The Cambridge Powerboat Challenge Races are one of the key events for the 4th Annual Cambridge Send-Off, capping the summer season for the region.
Unlike ocean racing, where competitors are straight ahead at full throttle, the Cambridge Powerboat Challenge Race is a 5 to 6 mile triangular course, requiring turns. Eight classes of boats will be racing for the $25,000 purse. Races start noon Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
According to Bill Bevard, Off Shore Powerboat Association race director, 50 or more boats are expected to participate in this year’s National Championship Race.
“While this is a national event, the majority of competitors will be coming from the East Coast, with some racers coming from the Midwest, Mr. Bevard said. “The powerboats are designed and built to withstand the physical demands and conditions of ocean racing.
Despite their large size and weight, these boats can reach speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
“These boat owners usually have anywhere from $500,000 to over $1 million invested in their boat and their race teams,” Mr. Bevard said. “The engines for these boats can be $50,000 each, with each outdrive costing $50,000 each, as well.”
Besides the Choptank River Fishing Pier, Hyatt River Marsh Marina is the best location to see the races and enjoy all aspects of the event. The race pits are open all day to see the boats both out of and in the water. A $2 donation to Rescue Fire Company provides access to the floating docks.
Blue Point Restaurant is hosting a Powerboat Party the entire weekend, with breakfast, BBQs, and refreshments, along with an “After Party” with a band Saturday night playing until 1 a.m.
All events and activities are open to the public. OPA races are also participating in the Cambridge Main Street Block Party from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday night in downtown Cambridge.
A number of the high performance boats will be there on display. Some of the race teams are also scheduled to be there as well.
