Hello OPA Racers - No Ps in Destin
Hello OPA Racers,
Because of you, OPA has enjoyed its best year of racing and we plan to continue the trend and take Offshore Racing in a new direction, a direction that increases the competition without taking away any the fun. Of course, it's always more fun when you win!
As most of you know I came up through the P Class ranks, running my 32' Viper with my son at my side. We always raced hard and won a lot of races but some how I always felt the term P Classes had some sort of second rate connotation associated with the name. APBA originally called the P classes the Outlaw Class boats. SBI calls them Manufacturers Classes, always somehow elevating the spec class boats over the P class boats.
I've heard several of our racers comment about the P, which really stands for Performance Classes, saying that the P numbering format is confusing for spectators since every boat has a P in their number panel. So with your input and a desire to give the OPA boats the credibility they richly deserve, OPA will no longer offer P Class racing. We are dropping the Ps and changing to an all number format used in many other forms of Motorsports.
From today forward the OPA classes will be known as: Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, Class 5 and Class 6. We will simply drop the P and the new numbers will be as follows. If your boat was P4 - 13, your new number is 413. If your boat was P6 - 29, your new number is 629.
Class 1 = 100 - 199
Class 2 = 200 - 299
Class 3 = 300 - 399
Class 4 = 400 - 499
Class 5 = 500 - 599
Class 6 = 600 - 699
Please make the adjustment to your numbers before you reach Destin as the new numbering format will go into effect a the World Championship races in Destin Florida.
OPA is now the largest Offshore Racing organization with 74 registered boats, let keep it growing and moving forward.
I'll see you in Destin,
