Re: Question for history buffs

APBA held the 89 worlds ,the races were held off till sunday because of bad weather at least two racers were killed, one when a B boat stuffed at the start of the first race and one in the second race when the ocean calmed down a lot and Skater Express barrel rolled just before the pier! That year Don Johnson,Chuck Norris and Kurt Russel came and raced! The now famous Littel Seasers big air picture was taken, the landing was when the boat busted in half! That was my first offshore race, and I was scared to death but I finished 3rd in B behind Lady and Feaver! I still have film and the trophy to remind me how old I am!!! Re: Question for history buffs

Ron,
I dont think anyone was killed when the B Class boat "Yes Express" stuffed; but the crew suffered some serious injuries.Unfortunately, Kevin Brown was killed when his "Team Skater" Modified Class boat stuffed. You were in the B-50 boat with Art Lilly, right?

Re: Question for history buffs

Waterboy1, Art was there wih an Arnow pace boat but left on sat. when it looked like there would be no race! I was in my 30 Velocity subbing for Pat Lowers Kamikaze that had burnt up beond repair per. APBA . When Yes Express stuffed the deck came off and got one of the guys is what I recal hearing! Ron.

Re: Question for history buffs

Waterboy1, Art didnt get the B-50 until 1990, At that time he hooked me up to run the 40 fountain called Executioner for Allen Fuentes out of Va. beach!

Re: Question for history buffs

Ron,that "Executioner" was a real runner, and one of the loudest boats that I have ever heard!I remember "Kamikaze" as well....they eventually came back out with a 29' Mirage.

I really liked Art's first raceboat "Joker"...22' Velocity twin 200HP's....the Stock Class vee bottoms were a great class.

Hey Ron, great to see you on the board! Hope you're planning on coming back to Cambridge this year in your new ride.

Waterboy-that Velocity was owned by VelocityMike here on OSO, but he recently sold it to some guy from Bermuda-it was a running machine :D

Re: Question for history buffs

Waterboy, I saw the Joker about 6 years ago! She was owned by a coupel of guys on the bay!I drove that boat onece, what a hand full of fun! Ted- Paul Manders and I are running all of OPAs races! We go to Point Plesaint on the 12-13! Then one more before Cambridge! But the boat is my old 30 Velocity!!!

Re: Question for history buffs

That is great! I didn't realize you had that name on the Velocity. I have always been awed by the way you run that boat-it always flys flat and it looks like you are out for a pleasure ride :D . Good luck to you and Paul in the upcoming races. I need to speak to you about Cambridge-I will PM you my number, call me when you get a chance.

Re: Question for history buffs

Looks like the one :D I wouldn't want to have to run up against these guys all season, Ron has so many hours on that boat going fast he could probably run the course asleep :D

Re: Question for history buffs

Ron and Ted,
I was wondering if you knew anything about an old A-Class raceboat that my friend and I purchased last year in Maryland.I believe the boat was raced in a few CBPBA races. It is a yellow 24ft Sunsation that was callled "Kryptonite".We are not sure what we are going to do with it yet, but we are finally about ready to at least start running around the bay here in Jersey.Thanks.

Mark

PS-Ron, I remember you and Frank running "Priority" on the USO circut.

steelintime 08-04-2004 07:54 PM

Re: Question for history buffs

Waterboy1, Chet G. and I raced the first 24ft. Team Sunsation in 91 or 92, the boat you have is not the origional race boat but the replacement!! Your boat was used as a play boat and may have run in one or two local races but should be in good shape!!! Did you get the motor and OMC drive?

1waterboy1 08-04-2004 09:30 PM

Re: Question for history buffs

Ron,
Thanks for your response. We knew the boat was a replacement for the original "Team Sunsation"...I remember that boat it was number A-56, white with multi-colored graphics, right? We bought the boat from Chet's friend Bob down in Shadey Side, MD.The hull is in excellent shape, but the gelcoat is really faded. We replaced the OMC Cobra drive with a new Bravo. How did the boat do in the races it entered? Thanks again, and see you in Point!

1waterboy1 08-04-2004 09:35 PM

Re: Question for history buffs

Ron,
The motor was not in the greatest shape, so we bought a used 468 with 450-500HP.We had the boat out a few times last fall and saw 70mph.We purchased the boat with the intentions of eventually racing it in P5.

Mark

Re: Question for history buffs

Mark that Sunsation is a great P5 boat and would be very competetive if all of the boats that are currently running P5 belonged there, but we all know that most of the P5 boats that are running should be in p4 but well we all know how that is going thanks to the rules being written in pencil, your Sunsation is a perfect boat for p5 because it is inexpensesive to own and operate and can make or break someone in to getting in to racing seriously or making someone decide that they really dont want to pursue the never ending lets see how much money we can spend boat racing trail, any way I wish you and Bob all the luck in what ever way you decide to go with the Sunsation.
