01 42 on boat trader

Just went on today, it looks pretty beat and about 40k more than its worth but would and could be a nice boat with some work. Sorry didn't grab the link but sure you can find it.

Mastercraft240 01-25-2011 10:30 PM

That was originally Bob Christies boat of Typhoon Marine. I believe it was then owned by a guy named Dennis and Mike Trojano in Mass. It was traded to Ocean Performance on a new 39 with 525's back in the day. I was on the boat when Ocean had the boat. It is classic Outerlimits and if the power if fresh it's worth the money. It's an all glass boat so it's a battleship in the rough. Someone will get a nice boat as a good price. It could prob use an interior an a few paint touch up but what 2001 boat doesnt but the 29 Kryptonite in the classifieds.

Not sure how fresh any of the power could be with as dirty as the bilge looks. Most of the time you see that much oil and grime it's been a while since anythings been done. I would think if it was they would say in the ad. But looks like a new cockpit clean the cabin touch up and buff the paint would be a great boat again.

OL40SVX 01-26-2011 03:44 PM

Yea it seems like it wasnt cared for that much after Ocean sold the boat. Sitill a great looking ride for someone!

SLOWRIDE-388 01-26-2011 08:31 PM

Needs some TLC, cool paint for 2001. Would make a nice boat for someone, I like the flame arrestors.

n20michael 01-27-2011 01:26 AM

According to the website, its 2200HP, not sure how "fresh" motors are, but, I think its "reasonable" at 140K, not sure if trailer is included?

Because its an older, heavier Outerlimits, what kind of top speed would it run? How would it handle?

Just curious, Thanks guys!

Michael

baja27 01-27-2011 09:06 AM

Drives and trans need to be gone thru also. Who know's how good the exhaust is also. Pot luck.

Handles great and with just 1000's 115 would be around where it would run.

n20michael 01-27-2011 02:37 PM

According to the salesman the motors are freshly rebuilt, I didnt ask about drives, I thought #6's where pretty much bulletproof? What could potentially be wrong with them? I figure 8-10K if it does need exhaust, and they are accepting offers, COULD be a pretty good deal, what do you guys think?

Michael

cowisl 01-27-2011 02:40 PM

Looks like it needs some major TLC. Always liked that boat.

The drive's are almost bulletprof but if they were not serviced will be a time bomb, I would need to see some kind of paper work on the motors or a 50 or so hour warranty, you could send the oil out to be tested to get some feel for how they are and a comp. and leak down test. I have a hard time thinking somebody took the motors out to rebuild and didn't clean the bilge. So if you add it up like this, Motor (2) rebuild 20-30k if nothing is wrong and you have a hook up,if the blowers need to be rebuilt tack on another 3-5k trans and drive rebuilds again if nothing major wrong 7-10k clean and fix paint 3k, new cockpit 5-10k depending on what you want, I would want a full sunpad. Hope the rigging is still ok but I bet any top shop will want to redo that too, got no clue on that cost but say 20k for rerig and all the other little stuff that pops up. Then with the year of it how are the fuel tanks? Thats why I said it needs to be 100k with a trailer to make it still a good deal if it turns into a basket case. I saw that boat when it was new and it was one of the coolest boats of it's time. I would bet my cost are low but I do most of the work myself so don't know the going rate. I would not take on that much work because I wouldnt be boating for 2 years. If I had the money I would lowball them on the boat then send back to OL or Nortech and have them do it. Either shop it would be better than new when you got it back, they have 10 years of learning and better stuff now.

n20michael 01-27-2011 07:35 PM

Good points!! And a real eye opener, when you look at it in those terms even 100K is more than its worth! My initial thoughts where to yank the "Fresh"? Blower motors out, sell them for a reasonable price (20 or 25K? For the pair) and put the money into a pair of 850 or 1075's and have a nice boat for decent money. BUT, as you say, if you have to fix a pile of stuff it COULD add up quick!

The idea of getting it cheap and shipping it back to Outerlimits makes the most sense in my opinion!

Thanks!
Michael

I would just try and get more info on the boat before a person makes any hard moves on the boat. Just my .02s.

+1. If anyone is interested go and look at it. It amazes me the people that want to buy boats and wont even take the time to actually go look at them. Just my .02.

LapseofReason 01-28-2011 07:40 AM

If I was ready to buy I would go and look at it and do some of the test I talked about, but the price listed, 30 pictures and no write up in the add screams call us so some fast talking sales man can try and sell it. I like the adds that give you all the info you want to make you call. But they must be so busy selling boats thats all they had time for. Fountain40 you work at OL just by looking at the pictures how much do you think it would cost back at the factory to get that boat back to 8 out of 10 ? I love the OL boats not trying to hate on them but thats one of the most beat ones I have ever seen.

WildThing47 02-02-2011 01:18 AM

The cost of that boat is pertaining to the motors. With the look of the bilge, who knows how long that's been sitting.

There's a major difference between rebuilt and refreshed. Who knows what parts they put in, or if someone put a washer or a bolt down the carbs. You need documented response here. Those motors are awfully high powered to just go in blind, you could wind up with the costs quickly escalating.

This boat could however just be a diamond in the rough, though I hightly doubt it. That looks like oily grunge...that thing need some serious R&R, If someone got the price down and put some coin in it, you'd have a gorgeous example.

Looks allot like my previous 42...had a very similar graphics scheme.

I'd get a marine survey, and check the motors out, or see if they start...if the hull's good, get the price down, and find yourself an excellent mechanic to start on a few things, and you could get away with a gorgeous boat...

GL to whoever does it!

She's coming home to Cali (and AZ for a few months) :coolcowboy:

dank368 03-12-2011 09:47 AM

Can't wait to start cleaning it up. It's missing the switchable mufflers. Any suggestions on which ones it came with or which ones to put on?

drpete3 03-12-2011 10:04 AM

congrats. Keep us updated on all the speculation that was made in the above thread. I hope you got a diamond that just needs some TLC

SLOWRIDE-388 03-12-2011 10:43 AM

We run HPI mufflers. They work great. Have not had any problems with the loto law. Knock on wood of course.

baja27 03-12-2011 06:08 PM

Dank, congrats of the new ride, I guess you beat me to her!Good luck and keep us posted

dank368 03-13-2011 10:11 AM

HPI mufflers, ok. The hoses are still there for the actuators.

Thanks guys looking forward to getting her home. Myco is almost done with the trailer. Looks like I will pick the boat up in two weeks.

I tried to buy this boat about two years ago, just couldn't put a deal together. He was just pulling the engines out. It's been sitting for about a year.

The interior is actually in good shape, just faded. 10 years old and no rips or loose seams. The paint looks good too. A couple small chips.

The worst part so far, is the powdercoat on the tramsom assemblies is bubbled from sitting by the salt water.

dank368 03-13-2011 10:15 AM

Back when it was clean

dank368 03-13-2011 10:32 AM

I assume this to be an anchor mount, any pics of one installed?

KNOT-RIGHT 03-13-2011 10:43 AM

Congrats Dank368. Looking forward to your progress.

Good to see ya back in the game:drink:

dank368 03-13-2011 01:21 PM

Push anchor tips into tip point holders to the right then back anchor head in to head holder to the left and tighten anchor shank in the anchor vise to the right, works OK

Thanks I'CE, sounds simple I can see it now. Don't know why I was drawing a blank.

Mufflers are only $600-700 each  No wonder someone took them

tgersx 03-15-2011 03:08 PM

I have a used set that you have for $500 for all four, they are a little rough and I think the acutators need to be rebuilt.

SS930 03-15-2011 03:19 PM

I had contacted Ken many, many times about this OL over the last couple of months. He always came back and told me he still has a deal pending on it and it's just pending CG paperwork. I guess I know who that was now! :D

Congrats on the boat, I'm glad to see it was someone on here that got it!

What size tailpipes are on my boat? I won't get it home for 10 more days.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o38275-en.html

It sure looks like the mufflers would rub together

baja27 03-15-2011 05:24 PM

they are 4.5"

SLOWRIDE-388 03-15-2011 07:55 PM

Did not know you had air lines to the mufflers, we had CMI ones on a Slingshot before, they were narrow at the boat, then mushroomed out a bit where the flap were. Good luck and congrats on the new boat.

Thanks, the CMI look to be the right size. I guess I'll wait till I get it home and take some measurements.

(looks like CMI's on GLH's old boat)

They were CMI's. GLH may still even have them. We replaced them with donkey d!ck mufflers.

Congrats on the purchase. I always loved that 42'!

That is exactly what we had, calmed the motors down some, and worked pretty good, but were not the best for LOTO. Still got pulled over several times. But no tickets thank god. The law has become a real pain down there on noise.

Can't wait to see the pics of it when you get it home.
