What prop for my 24

2 Attachment(s)
Can you guys tell me what prop would work well on my boat it has around 425 hp. I used a friends prop but we are not sure want kind it is.The boat did around 65 mph at 5200 rpm witch is max for my cam but it got there very quick.
Thanks

What are the numbers on that prop hub? What displacement is your 425hp engine? 454 or 502 or?? When I had my 24 I tried 3, 4 , 5 blades in pitches from 21 to 27 with a few different power levels.

IRONMAN 08-07-2010 08:29 PM

Also, you are on the right track if that is a gps speed and calibrated tach reading, Looks like a standard mirage 23 solid hub from the pics but I could be way off on that guess. Glad to hear you are running the boat, Must look great. Chris

We are running the original 23P 3 blade Cleaver on a 1978 24 SE and getting 69-70 mph at 5100 rpm...but we have around 500 Hp out of a 454 punched to 468... reaching that speed with a fair amount of air under the boat (little drag) on Lake Ontario...

onesickpantera 08-08-2010 08:09 PM

My 24 likes a standard mirage(non-plus) for all out speed but mid-range sucks as it slips a ton. Turbo Lightning is a great all around 3-blade. Rev4 is the best handling prop but you give up a little top-speed speed.

Stormrider 08-09-2010 09:42 AM

I ran a 23p Mir+ w/ both engines.
tired 454mag, and 560hp 461ci.

I haven't gotten the numbers off the prop yet. It is a 454 bored 60. I believe that is a 468 ci.

YUP,

That appears to be an old standard Mirage, RPM, and speed seem about right, but how did it handle? Maybe try a mirage plus, both of those work great on my 24, but it has an outboard, so hard to tell.

tggrounds 08-10-2010 08:49 AM

I want to say thanks a lot for all the input it is a big help to me because I am new to boating and this is my first boat. the no. on my prop is 48 13244 A5 21B The rpm's go up very quick with this prop, I did try a 4 blade 25p maybe a bravo 1 not sure for only a hour and rpm's were only at 4800 and gps speed was 67 mph but I don't know if I had it trimmed out right it seemed not to handle that well but my mid range was good but slow getting on plane. I was told the boat should do 72 mph with my motor, it has at min of 425 hp.

468 c.i.
Barry grant 750
air gap intake
merlin heads with sum work done
roller tip rockers
large cam need to run dry exhaust (lost cam card)
JE pistons
all msd

Stormrider 08-10-2010 09:41 AM

I'm not too sure of that mentioned speed, but it could be right.
Same 23P mir+, 365hp:65mph / 560hp:75mph.
I liked the mir+ much better than a B1.
Btw, B1 props only come in even pitch #s.

My advise is try a 23p prop, and go from there.
Make sure all your test props are stock, and not labbed.

IRONMAN 08-11-2010 10:01 PM

A 23 mirage+ like storm said would be a good start, I liked my 4 blade bravo1 26 labbed with 500hp 502, 77.5 to 78.5 any day. Probably a 24 would work really well with a 468. My best top end prop when I had the 454 400 Hp Cyclone in the boat was the Hydromotive 24 3 blade that was great in rough water with very little positive trim ran 68 gps @400hp and ran 75gps w 500hp Stay away from the hydro 4 blades, they lift the transom way too much. Try to get the rpms above 5000.

I have a 21 Mirage plus, or a standard 23 Mirage that I would sell. BTW, what you have is a standard 21 mirage, the 21 plus may be what you need, as the 23 will knock off some top end RPM.

Do you know what the plus is on the mirage props?

I believe there is more cup, for added sternlift, which also makes it act more like a 23 pitch RPMwise, and it has the removeable plugs to allow some blowout to get RPMs up during planing. Both props ran about the same on my boat, but not quite enough RPm for the outboard, so I am switching to a standard 21(which I already have, or I would offer a swap), with whichever one is left used for a spare. The 21 plus is MINT, and I would like $300+shipping with the flo-torque hub, or $250+shipping if you do not need the hub. If you want the 23, it is an older prop, and not as shiny, but no major damage(just some small nicks here and there), and would let it go for $150+shipping, this is a solid hub prop, so it would obviously include the hub.

The plus has more cup so it bites better and in turn lowers rpms over the standard mirage. The plus also has a little more bow lift.

Tell me about it! I've tried about a dozen props on my 24. :D

With the narrow beam, there are many good props for it, but some have a mind of their own when it comes to handling, especially when you have 500 pounds hung 10" off the transom, soon to be 18" setback:eek::evilb: I can't remember which size prop we ran on the Kean Raceboat, but it was a 3 blade mirage, that motor had so much torque it would lift the starboard side even with Big Scotty in the drivers seat when getting on plane, imagine what it did when my skinnyazz 150 pounds soaking wet drove it:eek:

I was hoping to try a 23+ If it is too much for my boat I would like to buy your 21+ if it is still available.

Rick how is your boat coming?

I have it, you may want to try the 23 first, if you can find one in your area, but if you need the 21 it is my spare, but I have a few others, so will let it go when you are ready.

getting there, I got most of the wiring done this weekend, back to the transom, just waiting on the new bracket(hopefully this weekend) before I drill any holes for the rigging hose.

onesickpantera 08-16-2010 09:00 AM

After running the Rev4 all season I decided to throw on my Mirage. I pulled about 200 more rpm but less than a 1/2 mile faster. The handling is night and day difference with the Rev4.

Gary D 08-17-2010 08:02 PM

you may want to also try Bblades, they can hook you up with the right prop they also offer test props for a small charge of i think $50. And you get something like 14 days with the prop.:coolcowboy:

pantera232 06-22-2011 06:23 AM

I have a 21 pitch apollo prop for sale very clean/ shiny
Not a scratch on it
