i had a 2005 28 with around 750 na power and the best speed low on fuel and with jo running the boat trimming to the moon was 84 mph . every day running was high 70's .

there's a big difference in a top speed and a every day speed that you can get with fuel and people in the boat . you have to decide what you really want , bragging write's or a boat that will do what you say it will all the time .

700 to 750 hp = high 70's to low 80's

also do you want to run at redline all the time and eat the motor up

so if you want low 90's top speed and high 80's every day i would think you need close to 900 pony's or at least something close .
it take's a lot of extra power to get these boat's over the 70 mph mark . i would say close to 200hp for every 10 mph over until you hit another brick wall at the century mark .

example. a 525 boat will do 72-73 top speed and around 68 to 69 everyday . and my 750 hp boat did around 10 mph faster on top end and everyday speed's and thats about 200 hp for 10 mph gain .

ow one more thing it depend's on how old or new the boat is they all weigh different .

When my boat was new Jo ran it 93 MPH with 750 HP and a Bravo XR. However I have the race style hull (notch transom with no liner) and at the time it had barely a 1/3 cabin as well.

Now loaded down with a sunpad hatch, swim platform, minimum but full cabin and 530 HP it runs an honest 70 GPS any day. If you can find one without the cockpit/cabin liner it will be a lot faster with the same HP.

that show's that the weight of the boat has a lot to do with it and also how high the drive is set up

do you still have that blower motor in there , if so that motor is not even working at 530 hp i guess that will make the motor last a long time witch is a good thing .

I knew the old bottom took alot of hp to run into the 80s.. it turns out alot more than I thought.

I'd be torn between a race setup or the pleasure.. I like my boats bare bones, but the full liner and cabin is really nice.. espically since we overnight quite a bit. It'd be a tough call.. at a minimum we'd have to have some dropout bolsters or sitdowns, a bed along with a sunpad and swim platform... figure at that point a full pleasure setup really isn't that much heavier?

Its looking like a few years till I can end up in a 28 Pantera.. just trying to figure out some rough prices for what I like to be able to run speed wise and get a long term plan together. Building a monster to make the old bottom run 80+ sounds like its gonna be very expensive..:eek:

It almost looks like I might be better off buying the new style hull rigged for power. Then add some mild power and a drive. I might be building a bigger motor for my 24 after a season or two, so my thought is I could drop that in a new 28 and be running fast enough to keep it interesting.

I agree on the drive height, Morgans boat always seemed to hit a few mph more for the power than comparable 28's - so I have read and heard.

Green Eyes on the board here is as close as you can get to 80, without being 80 with one of our 650s in it. Hes got the magic touch ;)
