Straight bottom 28: How much hp to run mid 80s with a single?
 

I guess the newer TS bottom takes about 600 to do it with a single.. how much hp does the straight bottom take to run mid 80s?

Best I can guess is around 675-700 in a single.. or am I way off?

If I recall from some past friends boats 720-750 should get it done.

That seems high to me. Have a similar boat, 29' phantom, and with just 540hp it was running mid-70s and this is not a light boat by any means - just dialed in with x dimension and imco box.

I'd have to think the boats are comparable so I would think more 625-650 but if the twin step boats are really at 80 with 600hp maybe somethings different.

Either way if your building new power go big - within a season you'll always want more! :drink:

Yeah, I've read that Jo picked up 12% more speed with the new TS bottom. 550-600 will run 80-mid 80s with the new hull design. Hell, it'll run 78 with a 525 I guess.. sounds like the newer bottom is awesome.

I would have to guess around 750 in a true straight bottom, race layup with notched transom would be a different story, twin 502EFI in a standard 28(830 total HP) straight bottom runs 78, but thats a lot more weight.

I own a 2005 Straight Bottom 28-Pantera with a Keith Eckert Motor which is a 540" Block that produces over 700HP on the dyno and the boat runs in the Low 80's... I believe that I might be able to reach 84 or so with a 30 pictched labbed prop... I look forward to finding...

:drink: Turn Key every day running with a load of passengers and fuel, you are going to need mid 700's.

I briefly ran low 80's while trying to dial a few props in, this Summer after the repower.

The new motor is producing over 700 ft-lbs of torque and similar HP, it was well on the way to hitting Mid 80's, however as Karma would have it, I never got it dialed in this summer.

Bad Seals and an Oil Pressure leak prevented me from getting everything dialed in, but it's a totally different running boat with over 700 ponies in a single.

Runs more like my 22 Classic with the HP500 EFI in it...much quicker in acceleration.

Fact is I bought the boat for rougher water running, top end is never going to be a Pantera's strong suit. Too many boats are much lighter and slicker on the water, including the newer stepped hulls. No one can argue the Pantera's performance in the rough...now that is another story altogether...

We did get a few runs in before I had to have the motor pulled again for the above issues... but to run consistently in mid 80s not all trimmed to the sky and in control and solid, you are going to want mid 700 ponies.

Or find a body of water with a hill on it and don't worry about it :grinser010:
