Trim tab placement on a 24x7
I'm in the process of rigging my 24x7 Excalibur and was wondering if it's best to mount the tabs parallel to the hull or the water?
Thanks, Doug http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps8672f0ba.jpg |
Is neither an acceptable answer? But seriously I prefer at about 20 - 21 degrees and 1/2 inch above the bottom at the closest point. Remember a trim tab is a rudder if installed at 90 degrees and provides lift only at 0 degrees of deadrise. Most will install them at the same deadrise as the hull but there are many factors to consider.

How's the build coming Doug?
|
Right or wrong, mine are parrallel to the hull, and about a half inch up from the bottom as ironman said.

I have a little more to do in the bilge and cockpit before it's ready for paint / rigging. Have all the interior. Engine is at the machine shop. Will have to run N/A for a season until I come up with the $$ for the blower but should still be a fun ride. :evilb: Doug |

Part of my issue is I've never driven or even been in a 24x7 so I don't really know what to expect... I'm assuming it will be prone to listing at slower speeds because of the narrow beam, and may need help keeping the bow down running in the rough being as light as it is... |

Mine were parallel with the botom and it robbed 5mph off my speed . I pulled the plates off 85 ... I put them back on 80 .. I will never go with the V again . At least pull them up to 21* .

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...orizontal.html Unfortunately I don't have enough room between my strakes and the drive to mount them quite that low. However, I just came across a video of my old Checkmate and it would appear the tabs would have no problem reaching the spray coming off the hull even if they're mounted higher.. http://youtu.be/ftkMurA4g_w |
Some people love them horizontal...some people, myself included, hate it. You cant extend the length of your boat when they are horizontal, your either up, or causing a serious hook.

Can't seem to find any pics of mine on this comp, but will keep looking.

Found a few, but not the greatest as I had to get them off another website I had previously posted them on. A bit different setup than y'all with 400 pounds hanging 2 feet off the back, they do tend to drag a bit:lolhit:

David Wolff bought all of Dave's equipment and is running the shop out of the same place. I'm good, thanks.
I decided to just haul it out to LLano so I could get everything done in one place... Bob at FTM has been using them for years with no issues.. :) Doug |

technically they are both splashes of the boat the Cuban's designed and raced in the early 70's . So you can't say Pantera is a splash of excalibur . I know somebody that was with Pepe in 79 when he cut a 2x4 and dropped it in the bottom of the hull mold creating the delta pad . But sitting in my shop I have a mold that was made from a excalibur and it has the same delta pad so I would think that's proof that Excalibur spashed Pantera .
I've never seen the bottom of a Pantera in person.. Is the pad you're speaking of the same as on my Excalibur which was built in 1979 ? http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...r/P4280040.jpg |

Not sure, but ours is a '77, so it's a contemporary of your Pantera.

Well, I have hull #2 and it's a '77' and it has a delta pad so your dude's memory must be rusty. When did bill farmer lay up the first excaliber 24-7?
|
This debate again:lolhit:
Didn't one of the old timers in the classic section say a magnum or something was the first one to the 24x7 party? Vintage chrome.....you know the thread I'm talking about, you started it! Not to say what's on this website is gospel....most of us know that's faaarrr from the truth ay this point. But dude makin the statement seemed pretty confident in what he was saying. I think it was tx2 or brownie???? I'll find it when I've got time.:hijack:pbm |

Not yours. The ones on the excaliber.
Luckily I came across a set of the older "square" ones so they can easily be added on to in the future if necessary :cool-smiley-011: |
