the airflow thru the carb spins the cooling fan on the alternator. so there is no belt robbing power...

maybe it did. lots of boats ran when parked and engines are worth less than one that blew like they were in a bruce willis movie...just started scrubbing 10 years worth of gluck off the front deck. you know you are motivated when cleaning a boat with snow...anyway, is there something that will turn this gelcoat white again? something besides 2-part polyurethane? these boats are originally gel, not paint, correct?

You are correct. They were gelcoat. Good project! Have fun with it.

Bought a decent 79 bad engine. old lady is less than ecstatic that i have another boat to build. Post details though. I am not the only buyer.
