raw water strainer

might be daft but was wondering how you keep the engine free from silt and rubbish and was looking online at sherwood raw water strainers 1 1/4"
are they for protection for other pumps and stuff and not to put inline with the leg water intake ? i was thinking about fitting one before the oil cooler but didnt want to do something real daft and restrict the water flow and blow the lot. it didnt have one before.

ah thanks, not sure that will fit as a bit wide i think but does have the advantage of the thing is cleaned from the top.
is an inch big enough ? how do you know what size you want ?

i was looking at these but i am not sure if when mounted i have room under to get the bowl off and out the way but i wasnt sure if they were fit to do the engine water system

1" NPT with 1-1/4" hose adapters will flow plenty of water.

ah ok thanks thats really helpful.
have to say i like the idea of that Hardin one as its a top loader and if an inch will do then it isnt that expensive actually

get one thats clear that way you know when you sucked up a bunch of sand and seaweed :P The one that came on my boat is gigantic big enough for something like a big cam cummins haha

have gone for one that i think will fit best and lightweight and as you say, see through. have also got some see through pipe so i can see the water flow. not in yet but in theory this all looks like it will work

It should be mounted to filter all of the raw water before it reaches the engine. I installed one after I sucked up a bunch of crushed shells and clogged my heat exchanger which resulted in a long tow on Lake Erie. Good thing I have towing insurance. I like this type because the top is clamped all the way around the edge and is less likely to crack. (the pressure relief system has since been eliminated)

it will be the first in line to the leg intake so should be fine

My 24 has Marine Machine raw water strainer. It works great. It even strains out fine sand pebbles that you can catch at crappy launches.
