Don't worry all ^^^ the boats in good company :) the real question should be will it be the first step 28 going 100 +? Don't think the few that are out there have big 100+ power.

I'm not too concerned with top end speed, too choppy here to go faster than 50 mph most days without breaking things.
For me, it needs a 496 HO and Bravo 1X. There's a couple in the classifieds with under 200 hours (about 15k) need to check them out carefully. The boat is already 2 years old so in a few years time, the engine hour discrepancy will be insignificant. Probably no need for hydraulic steering with a 496. No silent choice, just through transom exhausts, forget engine mods, keep it stock. Fitted out nicely, would make a great social boat and would be a very cheap entry level into offshore boating. If you absolutely must go 70 plus, this idea won't work. Check a few of the scan sheets printed by Merc owners and see how much time their boat actually runs at high revs (speed) and ask "Is it really worth it?" RR |

This post is just wrong for so many reasons . That would be like putting a stock Honda Civic motor in a Lamborghini to drive in a 35 zone . Not to mention loosing another Pantera over seas never to be seen again . Everyone always ask what happened to this boat or that boat and they never turn up again . Well that's why . I know Germany has a big offshore seen , Puerto Rico claims a bunch of Pantera's and now we know some have gone to Thailand .
I did question the idea of smallish power in the boat on another thread when the boat first showed up. Doesn't matter now anyway because I am not the new owner. I stole a couple of Sea Rays and a Fountain from the U.S. and if I will be pinching something else when the current rig sells. Maybe Sea Ray and Fountain don't matter but out of respect to the Pantera fans, I already had a name planned.... "MoJo".. Unfortunately, for anyone stupid enough to bring a boat with a blue motor to Thailand, wait until they want a service done and find out the dealer here doesn't have the gear to service/diagnose/rebuild Mercury Racing engines. The nearest Merc Racing outlet is in Singapore I think! Anyway, good luck to the new owner, he's got a nice boat and I hope his project goes well. RR |
