The new 4 stroke O/Bs are nice, technology wise, but Id still go for a pair of XS's.
Im building a pair of carbureted OMC V-6's that should make close to 300 HP's per and only weigh 450 lbs each.
Thats a 100 lbs lighter than the lightest 300 HP 4-stroke.
Times two motors on my 25' Checkmate, thats a 200 lb+ weight savings on a small, narrow, light boat.
They're not great on gas but........, I can build/maintain them myself (as anyone could) and Ill have $5K in the pair compared to $55K for a pair of new ones.
I can see the market for clean, older 2 strokes growing accordingly.
You can get a Merc re-man'd full dressed, drop on XS powerhead for $8500ish.
Buy a popped but clean one for a couple grand and you're off to the races.
And keep the popped p.head for spares.

Extra fuel? Is there ever enough?
Not on a good day.
Smoking?
The latest version of the OMC 2 Stroke carbs are very good.
Tuned properly, once warm, they’re virtually smoke free.
So let’s review,
Even w/the heavy, 15 lb oil tanks they’re 150 lbs lighter (per) than the lightest, new 4 strokes and 250 (per) lighter than the heaviest.
Ive got $4k (ish) in both.
I have a shop full of free parts (including 2 spare powerheads) and can rebuild them ( and the gear cases) in the dark.
I know not the same as my Xs examples but 1/5 the cost and I know how to work in them.
I would still take a pair of 300 XS’s over anything currently available new.
The first gen 300 e-Tec’s are more durable but have **** gear cases for performance.
Cleaner and more economical to run than the new 4 strokes.
On a fully pimped out center console, probably not.
Id want max displacement.
