5 blades on a 28 single??
Anyone ever try a 5 blade Hering or other prop on a single 28'?? Seems like I heard that Jo commented the hydromotive 5 blade did not have enough bow lift.
I'd sacrifice a digit or two on top if it resulted in more than that gained at a 3500RPM cruise. Running a labbed 28 now- 20% or so slip if I remember right. |
Kenny,
I have personally not tested a 5 blade on the 28' yet, but will be testing soon. Call Tom at Hydromotive or Throttle UP Props and see if you can try one out. Tom has recentley designed some new props that will offer more bow lift. There is no way that your boat has a 20 percent slip rate at 17 1/2 with ITS due to drive height. I normally mount the drives on a 28' single at 17' with no setback box. Labbed prop might give you a little more slip but no way you would have 20 percent now. The 28' model with the drive height aand ITS you have now should be in the 10-11 percent slip rate. Did you try a 1/2 spacer yet ?? I personally feel your drive is fine where it is at. Try a 26' Bravo 1 not labbed and see what it does for RPM and see if you notice anything different in acceleration. Also you can try putting 100 pounds of weight near the transom and running the boat and see what it does to your slip.It will help sqwat the transom down further. Make sure the weight does not move around, only flat water. I will let you know as soon as I test a 5 blade prop. Regards, JO |

I have purchaced a 5 blade from Mike at halls he put some bow lift in it I hope to test this weekend /again If you want a prop tuned for your boat Mike is the man all others are imitations if I spelled it corectly ? This one has been straightend labed n and he re curves the blades Im prety sure Jo had mikes on the race boat ??Brian

Im prety sure you need a high X to make the 5 blade work I do many dont
|
5 blade on new propshaft in test this week looks good ??
|
Which 5 blade did you start with? I'm about to buy a p5X from throttle up.
|
A halls prop I wouldnt buy a throttle up they dont have the experence in my opinion I bought a 30 hydromotive . Thers more to a 5 blade than a regular prop most likely it will slow you down if not real careful . How high is your x dim you do not have a transom notch right . Reason I say be careful 5 blades are real rough out of factory they need a lot of attn to detail. Unless its a herring witch Mike says they are not as fast as the hydro for us . By the weekend I will have some good input on the subject I hope . Brian

Do you have a spacer in it now ??
|
B-stubb- which hydro though? I thought the older semi cleaver hydro had been run on our boats and found to have "inadequate" bow lift???
The "stock" P5x has been tested and gotton favorable results vs a labbred bravo- no top end loss, but 5mph + picked up in cruise rpms. It's designed more for bow lift and looks to be a 5 blade bravo design. My x is 17.5", no notch, no spacer and 7" of ITS set back. Have you got a number for Halls? |
A hydro or bravo can have bow lift just how they are cut ? Mike can make a hydro have bow lift like a bravo, but out of the box a bravo has more bow lift yes that is correct but in the labing process you take some of the cup out of it so you get the mph . I have spent a lot of time at Mikes shop so Im learning . Next you need to talk to Mike so he could taylor a prop for your boat ,your x is deep a 5 blade will probaly slow you down /px5 you are talking hydro right ?
|
Yeah, it's a hydro, I got Mike's number- will be speaking with him tomorrow:D
|
Ive had merc labed props hydro factory labed props Mikes have by far out run them all
|
Well, I bought a P5X from Throttle up, I may have it tuned once I run it. Mike must be busy or out of town, has not answered the phone or rerturned calls for 24 hrs.
Throttle up is being used by several race teams so I don't think they are newbies either. Jo had recommended two shops to me TU and Halls. Any testing on your side yet? |
I RAN THIS WEEKEND RAN GOOD I need some more playing with It bites hard will bring down slip numbers right now ran 77 mph at 5000 normaly run 84 at 6000 with lab 30 bravo now this would compare to hydro 5 blade like a 26 pitch lifted the drive 1 inch Im trying a 31 4 blade hydro tomarow while Mike takes some out of the 5 blade in summary I beleive we will be able to run same numbers as compared to the 4 blade but have more control over boat In the rough .I drove nice no playing around drove like a cadilac . If you go to ultra high X you will see more mph I think a 2 inch shortie would give me 5-7 mph did on buddies A/T Thats all say it cant spellit B.

The new 5 Blade from Hydromotive is called the P5-X. This NEW propeller is a bow lifting propeller. Our initial testing has produced realativly impressive data.
Cruise speeds were improved drastically, with 4-8 MPH increases. Top End numbers have also been respectble. We have seen speeds that equal the 4 Blades as well as increases in Top End over the 4 blades! Acceleration times have been improved tremendously, as is expected with 5 blades as well as 6 Blades. In many test the STOCK P5-X will out perform a Lab Finished Bravo I. The P5-X provides bow lift without extensively modifying a standard P5 to acheive desirable results. My five blade experence has been stalled I had a cam fail A comp cam I orderd a cam for the motor and aplication told them everything . It went flat deestroyed lifters in 4 hrs . Called comp they say they will stand behind it stay tuned we will see . Oh in case of the sceptics I bought the entire kit nothing to chance . pop pop pop pop pop all for now >B Prop may do beter than first thought ??

Mike losend it a little my numbers arent there yet the prop handels the rough great it gets on plane great It doesnt slip at all ,but I have a little to much pitch like if your running a 28 buy a 24 in a 5 blade maybe a 22 . I do have a 60 mph cruze at 4000 rpm !!
|
good news- I should have mine in 2-3 weeks, I'm starting with a 26"
|
Cattitude,
Yes you will have your prop soon!!!!!!! We have been testing the P5X on a daily basis and it keeps getting better. The acceleration with the new P5X is MUCH better than the standard P5. The stability of the P5X is much better than the standard P5 as well. I ran the P5X on a Super V Light boat yesterday in 4-6 seas and it really stays hooked up! I think you will be very happy with it on your boat. Matt |
