Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
I'm not sure if my built 454 with the procharger will be enough motor for my new 28. Might go tall deck!!
What are you running for power, what prop and speeds are you seeing in your 28 single? |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
700 Horse 572 CI. Current best speed is 75 with 30p Bravo @ 5000 rpm. I only have 10 hours in the boat and 8 of them I had high water pressure issues so I wasn't running it hard during that time.
I'm still getting seat time and learning the boat. There is definately more speed to be had with some setup work. Prop slip is over 20% |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Wildthing,
Hows the time to plane with the 496 HO? Thanks for the input guys. |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
575sci and ITS. Best speed 74 average top speed 72

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
WOW,, those 28's are pigs !!..
When I was looking at a used 2001 with 500 EFI the owner said it would do 70-71... guess there wasn't much chance of that ? if an HO powered does 62 I would suspect a 500 efi powered 28 would do 65 max.. |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Chris288 don't be so kind with your words. hehehe
The 28 might be a little slower in lakes and smoother water conditions but it will run circles around "almost" any other similar hull with equal power, offshore. Hands down. |

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Our black 28' F-1 raceboat @ about 4200 pounds w/ a merc 500 EFI would run 78-79 mph, panteraman owns it now w/ a big 750 hp blower motor and I will let him tell how fast it runs, or ask lukiepal who owns BJ Maher F-1 "travel now,com ask him how fast his boat run w/ another blower motor, or ask Albert's mypantera28 (I am not sure if that is his handle) how fast his run. Maybe another one to ask would be Bruce Seroff in Awesome or maybe you can ask Danger Kitty who has an Innovation 650 hp and I think he has told me runs over 80,(I think 82 mph)
Anyway to answer Mr. Chris288 about the pig remarks, it will all depend on wether you run salt water or fresh water, humidity, weight of the boat,, water condition (the boat will run best in a real 2-3' shop) and then the person driving the boat!!! To answer the question, the boat will run w/ 525 merc on a hot humid south fla. day right @ 72 mph spinning a 24" Bravo 1 at 5200 rpm. You will be able to ak Fullthrotle to verify that for you. Yes, the boat does not have steps, and could be a litle faster w/ steps maybe a couple of mph, but it runs real strong in big water, that is where the boat really shines. Sometimes it is not how fast you go, but how far you go fast. There are buyers for stepped boats, and there are buyers for non-stepped boats. Please, do a search on all the polls done on "BEST 28's" which we won hands down! then I think there was another "BEST TWIN 28-34V bottom" which we did not fair too bad!! We were tied for #1 w/ Cigarrette 28' and still another about 24' to 26' V bottoms we did not do too bad on that one, considering that Bajas and checkmates owners outnumbered Pantera owners by a lot. Chris, if you are ever down our way, stop by and Jo will give you a demo, so that you could check THE PIG first hand!!! Have a good evening, Later, Pepe. |

Deerfield Beach your looking at 3 or 5 fotters and I will run 75 with out backing down so if your or game for that, the ride is free of charge. I will tell you this, I cant stop in the middle of the race course for you :blaster: It is all in who is in the boat & the stick in their hand my friend anyone can run on a lake or in the intercoastal but these bad boys run in the name of OFFSHORE ONLY. With my blower motor I run 98 on the GPS. |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Hey Albert if Chris288 doesn't make it or can't make.... it to your invitation.. let me know and I'll be there with my water wings on !! hehehehehe

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
No worries guys, Chris has one of them 28 Sunsations, which we all know are an absolute rocket running in the ocean, that's why there are so many of them! :p :D

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Maybe my 640 HP won't be that bad then. Perhaps I'll run it for a couple of years until my son gets a little biiger and then swap out for a larger engine. Sounds like I should be in the upper 70's with my current set up.
Thanks everyone, nice to see an informative post from the man - Pepe!! Great finally meeting you and Joe at Milwaukee. I hope to get to Miami to see you guys again and the shop. Thanks for all your help over the past couple years. Keep me in mind when you go to sell F2-71!! Kirk |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Would SLUG have been a better word ?? lets compare apples to apple here.. Pepi, compared a full out race boat to a pleaseure boat... Full pleasure 62 with H.O. = 65 full pleasure 500 EFI.. And not once did I ever bash Pantera's offshore ability..
P.S. Thanks for the offer... |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Oh, and since I boat in the hudson river and surrounding lakes, and only see the ocean 2 maybe 3 times per year, My 496 H.O. powered 72 mph sunsation is just fine..
And I guess the 4-6 footers we were hammering through on lake champlain last week was chicken scratch ?? Since Pantera's handle so awesomely, 62 mph in a 28 must feel like 40... |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Cris, I never said a pleasure boat 500EFI = 65 mph. I think you would be better to ask "danger kitty" a reputable OSO member who has raced in "CARRABAS" a bone stock 28' pleasure boat that has been raced for the last 3-4 years how fast it runs. Later, Pepe.

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
I would surely be dissapointed if ANY TWIN 28 + couldn't run balls to the wall in 3-4's.. As I have said,, I NEVER ONCE QUESTIONED PANTERA'S OFFSHORE ABILITY,, and from what I have seen, it wont ever come into question, no arguement there.. But, the original question of this thread was related to SPEED.. and like some other 28's, out there, it takes big power for a 28 Pantera to go fast.. :)

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Cool
Got some Anna pics to post up while we wait for some of the big power single guys to chime in? :D |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
What is the weight difference between a 288 sunsation and a 28 pantera single/ dry weight?

Danger Kitty a pleasure boat 28' w/ a 650 hp motor by Innovation runs over 80 mph I wish he would chime in. Later, pepe.

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Just one tidbit that I don't think was said..
The 28 Pantera is much bigger than most 28s... No molden in platform in that 28' here... It's more like 30 with the platform.. The boat has more wetted surface than boats like the Sunny 288 or a Fountain 29... Thus the Pantera has no trouble smoking either of them if the water is more than 2'... :D |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Just to answer my own question... 28pantera:5250lbs / 28sunsation:4500lbs.
|
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Tm, I would respectfully have to disagree with you regarding your " no trouble smoking them in 2's.. " comment.. I can run WFOT in 3 to 4's,,, and 496 h.o. to 496 h.o. is not even close,, 62 for the Pantera and 70-71 for the sunsation.. Yes, I agree the Sunsation is 288 with the swim platform.

Ok I propose that we have a "Run Wut U Brung Run"
the course will start within Biscayne Bay (smooth water) and then we head out Bill Bags State Park and head east towards Fowley Rocks then head south towards Ocean Reef Yacht Club then back in to the Bay thru Angelfish Creek and first one to the sandbar on Elliot Key drinks all day courtesy of the rest. ??? |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
I have not ridden in a Pantera yet (although I think I mentioned somewhere how I've been dieing to for the past year and a half), but I have been in several Sunsations. Remember, they are built up in the Great Lakes, and those Lakes have a real tendency to get snotty. I think the run-wut-u brung might be pretty interesting. My guess is the Sunsations would surprise everyone at how fast they are in the rough water, but ultimately the Pantera would survive a continuous beating longer.

I'd go along for the ride........ as long as there is an open seat in a PANTERA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rick |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
The Sunsation is a very fine boat. later, pepe.

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Again Sunsation seems like a great boat and the waters in the great lakes are definetly Serious..
Rick stay focused and before you know it you will have your own Pantera. You never know ......"Run Wut U Brung" could become a reality. Albert, Tim we need to get together |

I know.... When? Where? |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Somehow this is turning into Pantera vs Sunsation. Chris had you not posted those pictures I would have deleted this thread and started over...thanks for the pictures!!!
I ran up Lake Michigan two weeks ago up to the APBA Races in Milwaukee with my friend in his 24 Sunsation Agressor and me in my 24 Pantera. I kept going further out seeking rougher water, he chose to run the shoreline. True this could be drivers preference. However, on the return trip (after meeting Jo and Pepe!!) he broke a coupler. I towed him several miles and he hopped in my boat. I headed out to rougher water and he couldn't get over what a difference in ride. He told me that he could fell an unbelievable difference between the boats and how solid and strong the Pantera felt. He now understood what I had been trying to tell him this past year about these boats and understood why I was going for the rough water. It does not mean that Sunsation is bad, its just the balsa layup and lighter boat = rougher ride. Panteras are unbelievable in the rough!! I can't wait to get the 28 out there. Now, can we keep this thread on track, unless Chris wants to post more on Anna, as I certainly have no problem with that. Inappropriate pictures can be sent directly to [email protected] Kirk |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Kirk,
Trust me on this the 28 is gonna feel awesome!! especially in the rough! Angel |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
Hey Guys:
Hope you don't mind a greenhorn chiming in.... I was at Cigarette today with my cousin Frank. He owns a Cigarette and took the ride down from Connecticut with me to help tow Full Throttle home and we spoke with Bud Lorow. I told him I was picking up my Pantera tomorrow and he had nothing but fabulous comments on the handling of a Pantera. He explained an awful lot to me on their characteristics, driving with steps and without, and their placement. Gave me an idea of top speed with a 525EFI and I should be around what Pepe stated...low 70's. That's just fine for me. He said I should be very very happy with the 525EFI and Pantera. That the 28 is one awesome boat. :D :D I can't wait. I stopped by the Pantera factory for a few minutes to say 'Hello' and Pepe told me we should be ready to go tomorrow. My boat just looks beautiful and I know that my smile will be from ear to ear. I just hope the ride home isn't too wet. Ron |

Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
No more pictures of Anna???
I'm pretty sure the Aggressor is a 24 by Sunsation. Regardless, he was seriously impressed by my 24 |
Re: Power and Speeds in the 28 single??
When I first put my boat together, it had a 468/525hp and ran right around 70@ 5400. Then I went with the 540/650hp and it ran 77-79 @ 5900. Right now Im running a tired 510/600. with a new XR, and we're runnin around 75 turning a 26 B1 at 5900. We lost about 2-3 mph going from XZ to XR. In race conditions, we only get about 5000rpms and 65-70mph. Thats in BIG water!!!!!
