THE ASBURY PARKS PRESS....TODAY (SATURDAY)

POINT PLEASANT BEACH -- Two laps into the New Jersey Offshore Grand Prix yesterday, Jerry Memoli realized he had a problem.

The problem, Memoli discovered, was that his 28-foot Pantera had taken on rain water, a lot of it, prior to the race.

"We forgot to pump it out," said Memoli, Toms River, owner and throttleman for Team Goumada. "That first lap, the engine kept dying out from all that rain water. After the second lap, I kinda said 'John (Schmidt, the driver), get the bilge pump going.' After that the boat ran fine."

Team Goumada was running third behind Simply Awesome, a 28-foot Pantera, and Revolution Marina, a 27-foot Progression owned by Nick Merlucci of Brick, before clearing out its weighted excess baggage.

That accomplished, Team Goumada proceeded to move to the front of the pack in the six-entry P5 class, for the smallest boats, and went on to its third straight offshore victory, and second of the season here; it won the Brick SummerFest race on June 27.

"We took a real beating," said Memoli, who made a winning offshore debut in the New York race last year. "We had some 5-footers (swells) out there. It was a tough race, a rough race but a good race.

"Once we cleared that (rain water) out, we kept up a good pace and overtook the leaders by lap three. Basically, it was smooth sailing from there on."

Hardly.

As a spectator fpr most of the race. I have to say Bruce and Goumada were both in there groove way ahead of the rest of the fleet and even catching some P4's

Bruce ,
Thanks for clearing up the confusion .
We had an awesome race - Pantera water !

You guys were awesome - Looks like we'll have some great racing in Cambridge .
The Revolution MArine progression was also kicking ass! Qball and Val had that thing aired out !

Sorry to see Scott rip his throttle box off - I have never seen anyone handle a 24 foot boat like that . I wish he could have finished the race .

See ya all in cambridge .

Re: Simply Awsome wins in Pt Pleasant

Cambridge is gonna be a tough one. Calm water. Maybe a mild chop. My boat ran the best it ever did, last year in Cambridge. The mild chop was just enuff to air out the hull.

From what I'm told, Revolution Marine has some serious damage to the hull. I hope they can get it fixed in time for Cambridge.

We are headin to Orange Beach on Thursday. We'll see ya when we get back
