I thought that P5 was capped at 70. Wouldn't 575 or 600hp make it a P4 ride? Nice Boat, If I only had another 10K lying around.......

575 or 600 would not make it a P-4, because they run around 75 in good water conditions. The advantage to a bigger cube motor in big water is acceleration out of the turns or off a launch. a 28 Pantera cant keep up with a 38 scarab in P-4 in Big water.

SO what you're saying is 600 hp from a 540cid is more powerful than 600 hp from a 510cid?
I always just assumed power was power, but then again I know nothing about motors....

And the true 70 mph boats are at a severe disadvantage.

Impressive Bruce !
Yes , the 540 CI motor makes a ton of torque - torque = acceleration .
My 540 CI motor I built made 575 hp @5200 RPM with a torque peak at 3800 RPM .
This allowed us to turn a big prop for gobs of midrange acceleration. top speed was around 73-75 mph . The motor could have been tuned for more hp easily and more top speed , but at the expense of midrange acceleration . HP = speed
Without going to higher compression , higher hp is at the expense low speed torque .
The Pantera 28 is a great rough water boat , but needs tons of torque to push it .
We could have tuned it to run in P4 , but when running against twin engine boats , it would be hard to be competitive . This boat will run near 80 mph with 630 hp , but acceleration out of the turns will suffer .
Tim G, give me your email address and I will forward pictures .
This boat has a full cabin upfront with locker .
