Steve, whatever you do... have Ed Cozzi check out your next boat.
And have a good engine guy go with him.
Your next boat buying experience better be a good one, or you may not want another.

Take this 34 for a test drive, then figure what its worth.
If you hate it, it won't be worth sh!t. If you love it, it may be worth the asking price.

the next boat will be a better experience hopefully.

everyone i spoke to till now says mid 50's is all is should pay for a perfect phantom with thise motors... i will lose 5 k and see 50k out f it next year if i want to get something else...

i doubt he will part with it at 50k or 55k ... even though it 's been there forever and i think it will be not soon till we see it sold...

i learned something... fountain gets sold easily. phantom, not at all. no one here in canada even knows the brand ! guys in the usa know phantom and not all know it... it is a specialized boat.

Before I became an attorney I had been in sales. It seems you are strictly a price buyer. The Phantom may not be for you, but you will not know that unless you see it in person, and once you have driven it, you will know whether you like it or not. When you have completed those two steps, then you will know if it is worth the money, and price may not be as big as a buying objection, until that occurs you will never know if it the boat for you.

i am a price buyer.. yes. i believe that part of enjoying a sport ,wether cars, race cars or boats needs to be limited to a certain cost unless bill gates is your cousin! or ,2nd, you will keep it and arent the type of fellow that like's to change..

i am someone that likes to upgrade often...experience ..change ...try different brands.

i did the fountain 35, now,want the 42, then the 47.

never did a phantom,so i am willing to try... in order to satisfy this, i need to buy well so i can flip and try something else... that is what i am and the way i enjoy these sports...

same as real estate or ferraris etc... money is done in the buying.. not in the selling.

now with a phantom, i hear from everyone in the industry i talk to... you need to steal that boat to be able to get out of it alive... from what everyone says, there are just about zero buyers for phantoms on the market..
all of a sudden, the laws of business apply:

lots of offers, lots of demand= good market value= baja
little offers, lots of demand = great market value= fountain
little and lots of offer and little -no demand = no market value or little market value = phantom and those little production companies.. they may be great boats but still no demand....

phantom seems to have real impressive reputation in the race world but that sit down boat is not what is wanted or desired... no cabin, cheap upholstery with snapped rear padding...

basically,speed only....

i am speed only... but for how long ?? 1 month or 2....

after that, i need to find another fellow that wants speed only... where is he ?? in how long ?? i become in the same position as the current seller... stuck with the boat for 1 year, or maybe even 2... who knows...

so, lets look at it as ,if it's cheap, u can enjoy it and sell it...

then again, this explanation makes the value of this boat which is not as much as a fountain .....

phantom = lotus..... fountain = ferrari.

both great cars...lotus is even a better sport feeling car... but resale is terrible... u lose lots on the way out... 1998 twin turbos at 45000. ! lots lots of car for the money.. and still, they do not sell.

i like the boat and would pick it up. but,i need to listen to all the emails and pm's i am getting.and i agree with all of them.

buy it cheap or stay away. i will do just that...until a 42 fountain appears at then end of the summer.

Your point is understood. Let me know what you get next, but whatever you get, please go see it in person, and drive it. You will be happy you did, whatever brand you decide to purchase. Good-luck in your search.

The 28" Bravo 4-blades were against the factory set (ECU) rev-limiters, so my father went and picked up a set of 30" Mercury Bravo four blades from Trenton Marine today. The boat was running 81 mph, which I think is outstanding for stock 502/415 EFI motors (he totally re-built them). He thinks it may be able to run somewhere between 82 and 84 with the bigger props, hopefully. Tell you more next Monday.

I like the Hydromotives props on my 34. I have 600's and into the mid 90's and bumping the Rev Limiters with them. I need 30 or 31 Hydro's to try next. The 29 are just a bit to little prop. I tried some Bravo props but like the Hydros better.

How many rpm are you turning? Did you have the 29's labbed with cup added? Sounds like your boat is definitely getting-with-the-program!

Barbers Basin, Salem NJ - the weather kept the boat in the garage this weekend.

I am running 5800 to 6000 WOT. I hope to try some shorty drives and larger props in the next 3 to 4 weeks. I am trying to break the 100 MPH mark and think this should put me over that. I will have to fix my speedo and get my GPS back from my brother to confirm the top end once I try the drives. :D

That is strong. My father just tried the 30's yesterday, and he is still hitting the rev limiter. The problem is that it bogs the motor down 200 rpm's once it gets to 5050 rpm max setting via the ECU. I would think that this would be hard on drives, with sudden bogging and surging. He will look to try a set of 32's next. Keep me informed on your propeller success. Thanks :D

You asked this question sometime ago, and I was not in a position to answer because lack of seat time. Now I can.

I love this boat. The propeller size is now sorted out, it is running 32" Mercury four blades @ 4900 to 5000 rpm; which is just under the factory rev-limiter setting of 5050 rpms. The boats drives great at wide-open, and is very predictable, it does nothing weird or goofy. The boat handles great at cruising speeds 43 mph to 46 mph, which is the speed we usually cruise. When it comes to running at wide open, you can feel the bottom really start to work at 80+ mph. The only thing I am not entirely used to is how sensitive to trim the boat is; the Magnum we used to have was a great boat, but this boat drives and handles completely different from a 27' Magnum Sport, but I did expect a difference.

This boat performance is far more than I expected. The horsepower to speed ratio is still unbelievable to me. If someone told me prior to owning this boat it would go as fast as it does, with the motors that are in it I would have called them a liar.

So to answer your question, I love the boat! :D

Re: Nice 34 for sale.

The 34 is sweet, you should take a ride in my 39 SV. Twin 525's and at 90 you think your sitting still. She starts to loosen up around 96 and at 100 you can take you hands off the wheel and let her float. You don't drive her...you just let her know where you want to go...she will take you for the ride.

Corners like she's on a rail....drop the nose...turn the wheel, and pull some G's. Not the fastest SV on the water, but definitely got the best ride and stability.

Built like a brick S-house and will take anything you want to throw at her. We spent 26 hours on the water and ran 315 miles shooting the Miami Vice movie (the part that got dropped on the cutting room floor) most of it in 4-6's. Coming back in on the last day of the shoot we dropped the hammer heading back through the cruise boat channel from Government Cut to Watson Island....104 and the biggest smile my face has ever worn.

Enjoy your ride...you've got a great boat that will last you a lifetime.

was is this boat still available ? unfortunately proves the lipstick brand theory. as good of a boat as it is its not a common household name. had the same problem years ago with an Avanti...raced on the circuts for years, few pleasure boats around and could sell it for my life. this boat is a damn shame...hey Ken i have a 1998 30 Spectre cat with 300x's im contemplating selling only cause i miss running the ocean. just unsure i'll be happy not running 105-107...interested in a trade ?

Re: Nice 34 for sale.

Your Spectre 30 is very nice boat. If I remember correctly, in '96-'98 it was the only out-of-the-box boat with stock engines you could buy that would do 100+mph.

I'm not looking to trade. Just found a couple of mph, so we will be back out on the racecourse this fall. Only problem is...every mph I get closer to 110...the competition gets just as far away from 110.

Bern, are you saying you don't like running the cat in the ocean? I've never rode in one so have no opinion, but have thought of a cat for cheap speed. Besides insurance being a problem, would running the open ocean be another concern?

berns29scarab 08-08-2006 09:02 AM

Re: Nice 34 for sale.

a 30 outboard just doesnt fair well in 4-6's...REAL 4-6's which is usually what we have here off the Jersey Shore. its a perfect bay/lake boat...1-3's it swallows up like there not even there. ran a poker run saturday in 2-3 ft washing machine style slop with 4 people in the boat, and 100-120 gals of fuel without an issue. chop isnt an issue...but smaller outboard cats dont like swells. 3 weeks ago ran the ocean from manasquan inlet to the barnegat inlet in 4-5 ft swells with slight chop across the top and an occasional 6ft hole...just not the right boat for those conditions. but if your looking for a super clean, 105-107 mph boat for in the $70k range i got 1 for ya...go to general discussion and hit the thread weekend at bernies...there plenty of pics there and also plenty of witnesses how my baby looks and runs.

Bern, if i do i will.
Your boat would be a nice candidate for the LI sound, especially the western area where i am.
Unfortunatley, after boating up here on the north shore for 2 years I miss running the ocean and inlets. Next boat will be kept on the south shore.

And gunning the inlet in big swells, that may occasionally break, in an OB cat... I dont have the kehone's for that.
That 28pantera w/ the 900hp and 3a drive would fit the ticket for that. Just gotta get past the kitty paint job.

btw, a 30speedster would kick @ss too!

No I have not tried the 5 baldes and now it looks like I am done for the season, as I wrecked a engine bottom end. So even trying the shorties will have to wait for next season.
