Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Beautiful pics. But pictures just don't do that boat justice. It has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

Or better yet seen racing on the race courses this year. The boat just ran phenomenally this year. Hats of to the entire team.

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Beautiful shots DPT. I heard that they were planning on changing the stern of the boat to make it look a little smoother with #6 drives, but these are the first pictures I've seen of what they came up with.
Personally, based solely on looks, I think that the BPM Rage hull is hands down the best looking cat in the size range. And as I said, you have to see it in person to truly appreciate how nice it looks. The time I saw it in person they wouldn't let me get too close to it because they didn't want to have to clean all the drool off the hull. It took a while before I could speak coherently again. My girlfriend had to drive home because she was afraid I would get a DWI. Yes. It looks that nice. |

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Yes. That's the one. And no, I wasn't there to see it when the Victory boat was there.
Phenomenal looking boat. It might have been sold to a UIM team but I didn't hear which team or what class it will be racing in. I'm not familiar enough with the UIM classes to know what class rules it would fall under. Anyone know if it's big enough to be a Class 1 boat? DPT, how many of those pictured did you take yourself? |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
I did not take those pics of the bare hull. I got those off their website. www.raceboats.com
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Yeah, I figured you snagged the BPM hull pics. Are any of the other pictures yours?
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Nope credits go to many of the fine people that take them during the season. Sorry just really like this design and I like to study designs of different boats and how certain hulls work better in different conditions. This design has shown that it can run right with the MTI designed Supercats out there. I know the team at KR have spent a ton of time with this design and from what we saw this year they are very successful with there changes. The boat just performs flawlessly.

I found some other photos of the hull being built on that site as well.

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
I might be getting a chance to snap some pictures at Platinum this thursday. If the crew doesn't mind I'll see if I can find a way to share some.
It will be interesting to see what they're up to... |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
SK-190,
I know it might be tough but I would really like to see some pics of how the canopy is layed out on that boat. See what they will let you do. Do you know if they are building a new boat or sticking with the one from last year??? |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
As far as I know Popeye will be the same hull next year. Not sure what changes will be made to it. I've heard some other "rumors" about what's going on at Platinum, but I don't want to share anything that they might be trying to keep under wraps.
What do you want to know about the canopy? Let me know what kinds of pictures you're looking for and I'll see if they'll let me take them. |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Just curious if it is a roomy canopy and how Jim Dyke lays out his guages and indicators. Any talk about the V bottom they built a few years ago??? I think that would be a great Super V entry.
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
The Popeye cockpit is a pretty standard supercat cockpit as far as I can tell; a very clean, no frills layout. As far as roominess is concerned.... I wouldn't really describe it as cramped, but I wouldn't call it "roomy" either. I'll see if I can get some shots.
Last time I was down there Jim let me sit in the throttleman's seat. It was the first time I've ever been in an enclosed cockpit. I think it would really take some getting used to. I'm used to being able to just turn around to look behind me in an open cockpit. Having to use mirrors would be a little weird at first. Other than that I don't really have anything to compare it to. As far as I know there aren't any plans to race the V. With the insurance situation being as crazy as it is for cat owners, I can't help but think that they should start pushing the V a little harder in the pleasure market though. It's a gorgeous V bottom. Very fast too. |

I've got some shots of a new Rage that has a silver paint job and is being rigged for racing. I'll try to see if I can find a way to share them in the next few days. |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Happy to hear someone else is building one for racing. There boats performed flawlessly this year. I am sure it had to do alot with Jim Dyke over seeing the entire deal.
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
I saw a new silver Rage at the shop when I was there Thursday. They were still working on buffing the silver awlgrip to perfection when I saw it. It's going to be a sharp looking boat when it's done. I kind of like the paint color.

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Thanks for the pic. Is this boat going to be running OSS as well??? That thing really looks HOT in Silver!!!!!!! Was this at Jim Dykes or the Platinum Facility??
Thanks, DPT |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
The boat is currently being rigged at Platinum. Like I said, the paint is metallic so the picture doesn't really capture it all that well. With the competitive nature of offshore racing being what it is, I don't think I can say at this time what sanctioning body the boat will be racing with. I don't know if the owner has gone public with his plans to compete yet. I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of press coverage of this boat in the coming season.

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Is this someone new or a return of a racing great.???? Thanks for the info you have given already. Did you get any other shots??? I hope this thread has been giving attention to Platinum and to Jim Dyke for there efforts and talents as that is what it was intended for.
Thanks Again, DPT |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
I got some other shots, but nothing all that nice to look at. I got a couple shots of Popeye, but they were working on it so the pictures are nothing special. I couldn't really get any nice shots because I don't have a wide angle lens and the boats are placed pretty close together in the shop. The shots of the silver rage are the best ones I could get. Everything else is just bits and pieces and crazy angles.
Yeah, I hope that people start to recognize what Platinum is doing too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in my opinion the Platinum Rage looks so much nicer than a Skater or an MTI. Skater is currently running ads saying that it takes more than speed to stand out in a crowd. Well, it does take more than speed. Instead of dropping 50K on paint, or having Skater chop your deck down, buy a Platinum. You could get the boat painted all white and you would still get more attention than a Skater or MTI at the dock. Plus, you could enjoy superior hadling while you're schooling all the other cats getting to the next card stop. :D But then again, I'm not exactly the kind of person who actually has the money to buy one of these things. I guess I just don't understand why everyone wants to follow the crowd. Maybe if I was rich I would understand. |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Good Point!!! I completely agree.
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics
Any updates on the new Supercat???
|
Re: Popeye Supercat pics

Re: Popeye Supercat pics
SK-190,
Just curious if they have talked about using the RAGE hull for Super Cat Lite or do they feel it is to big for the class??? How far is the Platinum facility from Jim Dykes shop??? Thanks for all your updates.   |
Re: Popeye Supercat pics

Do you guys realize the history behind this Popeye's Team?
Way back when, in the early 70's, Dominic Visconsi had a little 27 foot Magnum that he consistently beat his friend, Sandy Satullo with. Sandy being a competitive guy didn't like that.....sohe went to Florida and bought himself one of those new "Cigarette" boats....a 36 footer no less. The Copper Kettle. Well since he had the boat, he figured he might as well race it and see what he could do.....he won 5 races that first year. Now of course his friend, Mr Visconsi, bought a 36 footer too, and named it .....guess what? Yes, Popeye! Check out our Historic Race Boats website formore. http://www.historicraceboats.com |
