King of Shaves Penalized ???

What was the reason for King of Shaves being given a penalty in the Germany race ???

wcmarine 08-10-2007 06:25 PM

What penalty was that?? Where did you hear this?

Boatlesss 08-10-2007 06:46 PM

Might have found what he was referring to.

http://www.powerboatp1.com/documents/results/11.pdf

Looks like maybe you went a bit too fast? 0.558 mph

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-10-2007 08:00 PM

A 1 minute Penalty equates to:

Exceeding the average by more than 2 mph but less than
4 mph measured over the whole race distance.

With only 1250 hp ? http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...unnies/eek.gif

Downtown42 08-10-2007 08:09 PM

any updates on Goldigger?

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-10-2007 08:26 PM

:offtopic:

Perhaps bring it up on the thread that is already started in the Forum Section it relates to ???

wcmarine 08-11-2007 10:07 AM

Ohhh ok, yes we were given a one minute penalty, and the second place boat was given a 30 second penalty, we beat them by 40 seconds, giving us the win.
Everybody thinks we are so fast down the straight-aways, when we actually arent. OL, and the buzzi ran side by side with us the first turn, but they have to slow down, we can run through the turn wide open!! The camera crew and our celeb commentator Tiff Needel were sat on turn one at the start, and he said he has never in his life ( he has been around racing all his life, he raced at Le mans 24hr, class one offshore) seen anything go through a turn like it. Even our onboard you cannot hear the engines dip in RPM.
The Fountain/Arneson setup is unreal!
Ask Bill Mazzoni, and Taboo, if we hadnt of had all the little gremlins in 2005, which would have given us more test time, we would have won it all! I will figure out how to put the onboard video on here for all to see. You wont believe your eyes!!
Sharkey ( that speed with only 1250??) . Mickosukee just ran a two way average of 115 with stock 525's. We dont even come close to those speeds!

You can't compare river glass conditions with whatever 525 + hp engines in a Kilo to the true offshore conditions and heavy seas you guys are running in over there...

It's just not the same ...

According to the Official Results, there was no penalty given to the 2nd place boat OSG / Donzi Marine. Where did you see that ?

wcmarine 08-11-2007 12:56 PM

I saw the officail results and I remember now that they actually came of plane and stopped 100 yds before the finihs line so they didnt break out. But we had a 60 second lead before they did this. So as you can see even with a min penalty we were still ahead.
Outerlimits actually finished second but were DQ'd
Germany was flat calm. And we can run between 90-100 through the turns it is easy to get high lap speeds.
Just to let you know we had our engines were Dyno'd by P1. They sealed our engines at the dock in germany.
On the first run we made 624.8 hp and the second run we made 625.4 hp!! All the P1 official were there to see this.
What a lot of people do not know is that we have over 170 yrs of racing experience in our team!
Crew Chief= Mark Wilson ( my father) Professional F1 driver for 30 years. Head of Rolla Propellers for 13 yrs, ( raced against reggie on the mercury team)
Chief Mechani= Criew chief for Victory team for 10 years also for Steve Curtis before this 10+ yrs!
Matthew Tracey= Ran all racing for Victory team for 12 yrs
Ian Hawkins= Was my grandfathers and then my fathers crew chief before leaving Uk. Now heads ilmor ( 40+ yrs)
James Sheppard= Honda champion 6yrs running, 2006 SV world Champ. 10yrs racing
Me: 8 yrs racing
And then all of this backed by Reggie Fountain...
Why wouldnt the boat be this fast??? We dont need to cheat with all this experience! We are constantly changing things to go faster!!! We came over to win.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-11-2007 02:09 PM

So it is fact that the OSG Donzi did not receive a 30 second penalty.

The OL DQ was being protested.

Do you know if a final decision has been made on the protest ?

It is truely a shame that after the previous day's events that any team would be penalized for being off the course due to a mechanical failure...

Due to the circumstances. whether it would have been you or any of the other teams, I would have expected all of you would have done the same thing.

Hopefully the offcials do or did the right thing.

wcmarine 08-11-2007 06:50 PM

I dont know what the result was on that. It was a fair way off the course, into a swimmers area. And the German Coast guard told us at every meeting to stay out of this area at all costs. I believe they got on plane in this area instead of idling out of it and then going. Thats what got them. So I heard...
It is a shame as it will be a good showdown in Cowes, Its our home race, 1 hr from where both me and James were born.
I cant wait for some real english choppy waters, to show how a Fountain really performs.
I am glad this series has made it to OSO, as it really is a fantastic organization! I will make sure I get our PR girl to update you guys immed. after races even if P1 Website is updated within minutes. Also there is live radio, like talkoffshore you can listen to for every race. Just go on website on race days.

.

It's also the home race for the yet untried but potentially competitive Carr-Sinclair-Pascoe Raceteam Skater team. What do you think of their chances?

racesdad 08-11-2007 10:32 PM

I Think I Met Them In St.clair 2 Weeks Ago. He Is A Riot And Should Be A Threat

wcmarine 08-12-2007 11:58 AM

I heard his boat is not ready so he is going to SBI New York race. May have changed.
However, I truly believe, that if they stick to the rules and have the same power to weight ratio as us, without engine failures etc... we cannot be beaten. The Fountain/Arneson combunation realy is that good. James won in the Skater last year and he says the Fountain is so boring to drive. It never does anything unexpected.
I'm not being Cocky, please dont get me wrong, thats not who I am.
But how cool is it to finally have Fountain, Skater, Outerlimits and Donzi on the same race course in the same class!! And to add to the list...Mr. Fabio Buzzi. WOW
Great racing, great competitors, GREAT FUN.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-12-2007 12:06 PM

WC,

What is done to seal competitors engines to make sure nothing is tampered with ?

Boatlesss 08-12-2007 07:09 PM

Craig, congrats to you, your team, your boat manufacturer, your engine manufacturer and your choice of Arneson Surface Drives.

I like to read success and someone HONEST with no objectives tell it like it is.

Your team shows what talent and determination can produce over what "Hype" wish they could achieve.

I'll be looking forward to your posts.

FeverMike 08-12-2007 09:57 PM

Sharkey if OuterLimits does not win why do you always think the other team is cheating the engine? Seriously just wondering out loud here.

MOBILEMERCMAN 08-12-2007 11:47 PM

What is the deal? Why is it some people can't except getting beat? And when they get beat they assume your cheating? It seems to ingrained in some. It seems to me after being fortunate enough to race Fountains and the Skater V it comes down to preparation and experience. The best boat doesn't always win but they best team does. A thousand things have to go right to win and halve of them is in preparation.

Did I accuse anyone of cheating ?

I only asked what practices are set in place to prevent it?

This still has gone unanswered ?

Great Work WC, You have an awesome line up there, great driving, great team, great boat, great set up! That's the way to win. Louie

wcmarine 08-13-2007 07:52 AM

All engines are sealed by P1 techs. They do a full scrutineering of the boat at every race, they go all through the boat checking all the seals etc... Then they randomly pull engines, like they did us, the donzi and buzzi in Germany.
Outerlimits is the only top running boat that hasnt yet been pulled, so I can assume it will happen soon.
We ran on the dyno with the exact HP we declared.
We had 13 crew members in Germany. You cannot beat it. All me and James ever have to do is get in the boat at the dock and drive.

I understand that...

I was looking for more details as to what they are actually sealing ?

Let me be more specific.

What is done to the computer connections to prevent them from being tampered with ?

Are secondary computers allowed to be wired into the boat incase one failed?

How do the inspectors check for ballast tanks ?

Do they verify where each ventilated step hole or water pick up goes to ?

Note:
My questions here are strictly general and are not geared toward any particular team or class. I am just trying to get an understanding of how thorough and fair Powerboat P1 really is.

Best of luck next week.

wcmarine 08-13-2007 10:04 AM

Sharkey, I really dont know all the answers to your questions on exactly where they seal etc.. All I know is they are strict.
They have three guys that climb everywhere on the boat for ballast tanks etc... Of course as we have won three of 4 races, they assume we cheat, and of course we are in a Fountain so that rings all alarms...:)
They have an ex F1 (cars) Tech. who knows what he's doing.
I think the inspections are way more intense than in the US, from what I see and all the guys they slap on the boat.
At the end of a race, they don't allow any crew on the boat until techs have been, even sat at the dock, they want the drivers to put lifting straps on!!!
Sorry I can't give you detailed answers to your questions, but I am busy running Fountain Worldwide and let our crew chief handle this stuff.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-13-2007 11:14 AM

Thanks anyway WC.

Perhaps someone else will chime in that knows and will fill us in here.

Have a safe race!

P1 And What It Takes To Win!

As the guy who put this Fountain-Ilmor Powerboat P1 programme together in the first place. I think I'm better prepared than most to comment on the reasons why we are doing so well in the series and beating the opposition.

First and foremost, I've been involved in offshore racing since 1979 when the Formula 1 Grand Prix team I was working for, Toleman, bought Cougar Marine. So my early days were spent close to the Curtis family and watching the development of their big Class 1 multihulls which changed the face of offshore racing forever. Both Clive and Steve Curtis remain close friends of mine.

Steve and I spend a lot of time together discussing boat racing and when the opportunity arose a year or so ago to form a partnership with Ilmor Marine, the new kids on the block so to speak, we jumped at the chance. You have to take on board that these guys, at their state of the art facility in Michigan, once designed, built and maintained all the GM and Mercedes-Benz Indy Car engines. They now do the same for the IRL series working with Honda. The also prepare NASCAR motors and have Roger Penske on the board of directors and a major shareholder.

Here at their facility in the UK, they also designed and built the Mercedes-Benz engine found in the McLaren Formula 1 cars so to have the chance to work with them using their Viper V10 motors couldn't be ignored. In racing you are always looking for that little bit extra, that advantage over everyone else. Unlike SuperVee or SCL, Powerboat P1 encourages teams to compete with as many different engine makes as possible. It doesn't make for a level playing field, I admit, but it's given the series something like seven "new" manufacturers all racing together.

I raced in the SBI SV Unlimited series towards the end of last year in a Scarab 43', Nigel Hook's old CITGO hull, fitted with Ilmor V10s. It was good learning curve in preparation for my team's planned entry into Powerboat P1 this year but it became apparent to me over the winter that racing dated equipment in P1, as most of the boats were, wouldn't be doing any of us any favours. Ilmor wanted us to do well (they are in the business to sell motors after all) and therefore wanted us to race a competitive hull.

So which companies in the entire world make the fastest monohulls? The choice was down to me. One of them had already made a surprising decision to go to Europe and race the P1 series with their 2006 SuperVee, now using the Mercury NXT package with added class weight, so that left Fountain or Skater.

The enthusiasm shown by Fountain Powerboats and Fountain Worldwide to come on board and make this programme happen was breathtaking. No other company could have put together a race winning combination in the time frame (8 weeks) which literally won its first event here in Europe at the end of May from straight out of the box.

Involving the Wilson family brought us a 24/7 connection to Fountain and a relationship with Arneson that I have to say has surpassed my expectations. We have what I consider to be a complete package and until this year, the Powerboat P1 series had never seen anything quite like it.

The reason we are winning, and winning well, is that we have sat down, read the rules and made the commitment. We are better organised than any of our opposition. We have simply raised the bar and not by throwing money away I can assure you.

Craig Wilson, apart from being Fountain Worldwide President, is a throttleman who gives us huge experience with Fountain products and Arneson surface drives. With James Sheppard, the guy who I put alongside Nigel Hook and watched (with great satisfaction) beat the all conquering Fountain SuperVees in Key West last year, I have one of the fastest monohull drivers in the world and, better than that, he has a great team sponsor in King of Shaves. Check out www.shave.com to see what they produce.

We are winning simply because we have the best combination of product in the P1 Evo field. I fear only Outerlimits when it comes to a straight fight but I still believe we are better equipped to deal with whatever is thrown at us and just because we've chosen to work and race a Fountain hull doesn't mean we're cheating. That comment really pisses me off!

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-14-2007 07:07 AM

Chris,

Thank you for taking the time to respond and givng us here some insight of your team.

It is much appreciated....

MOBILEMERCMAN 08-14-2007 07:30 AM

Race on Chris,
I have been a part of teams that fell under the same scrutiny as you and understand your frustration. It is such a shame. You do your homework, put together a package, kick ass and get scrutinized and more. I hope in the interest of parody your team doesn't get penalized by weight as we have in the past.
My buddy Art used to say," only the lead dog has bite marks on his ass".
Jim

wcmarine 08-14-2007 08:36 AM

Well put Chris, but I must add that even if the boat was built in 8 weeks, the whole Arneson package has been an ongoing process since 2005. Mark Wilson has been researching and pulling his hair out to figure out the best setup. ( being his son I stayed at the office many nights laying out full scales of the transom etc...
Obviously it has paid off!!!
I guess I could put it this way... We are like Tony Stewart or Jeff gordon (which ever you like better) ...Best Car, best crew, best equipment....Race WINNERS ;)

Downtown42 08-14-2007 09:22 AM

It's only a few that can't accept the truth. If you get pissed, take it out on the race course. Great job.
