Powerboat P1 Maltese Grand Prix of the Seas Result
POWERBOAT P1 MALTESE GRAND PRIX OF THE SEA
SURVIVES ROUGH WATERS – AWARDS NEW WINNERS
The Mercury Racing-powered #88 Kiton Outerlimits OSG Racing team took its second Evolution class win in the Sunday Sprint race of the Malta Grand Prix of the Sea. It was another dominant performance from 2006 champion Giancarlo Cangiano and American co-pilot, Joe Sgro in the Outerlimits boat as the team also won the Saturday Endurance race, securing the overall Grand Prix of the Sea victory and moving into second place in the Evolution class championship standings.
Finishing second were the reigning Champions, James Sheppard and Craig Wilson in the Ilmor-powered #99 Fountain Worldwide 1st4boats.com entry. The pair settled into second after dropping back at the start in Sunday’s race, but experienced mechanical difficulties on Saturday. A pair of points finishes keeps the team’s lead at the top of the Evolution class standings.
The #10 Fantastic 1 Cigarette Racing Team rounded out the podium finishers, despite slowing in the second half of the Sprint race with an engine problem and retiring early in the Saturday Endurance race with electrical issues. America’s popular throttleman, John Tomlinson, stood in for Lino DiBiase and joined Luca Formilli Fendi in the cockpit over the weekend; he may continue to race with the team during the P1 season.
The #66 Cranefields Wine and #60 GFN Gibellato boats rounded out the top five Evolution class finishers, while Italian Max Ferrari limped his #53 Pignolo 53 entry home after his engine hatches came loose midway through the race, severely hampering the handling of his boat.
The #69 Honeyparty.com team was forced to pull in halfway through the race with a split hull, leaving the British-based outfit with a sour taste after Saturday’s podium finish. It was also a bad day for the #77 Lucas Oil crew, as pilot Nigel Hook and stand-in throttleman Richard Wyatt failed to start the race, still suffering the damage from Saturday’s extremely rough water.
In SuperSport, the #44 Conam Yachts crew of reigning SuperSport champion Angelo Tedeschi and local Maltese hero Aaron Ciantar took their second win of the weekend and their fifth win of the year in Sunday’s Sprint SuperSport Sprint race. The team lead from the start and romped home to another dominant, unchallenged victory, securing the overall title in the Malta Grand Prix of the Sea event. The Mercury-powered hull is built by Ciantar's Malta-based family business, Chaudron.
The #38 Baia High Performance team of Stefano Acanfora and Renato Guidi finished second after a three-way battle for the remaining podium positions with the #07 VoomVoom.com, Hustler and the #47 Silverline Buzzi Bullet teams. The Italian-based team finished third in Saturday’s Endurance race and second in Sunday’s Sprint race in the Mercury-powered Donzi, solidifying its third place in the SuperSport championship.
The diesel-powered #07 VoomVoom.com team of Gareth
Williams and Vahid Ganjavian, spun out two laps from the end, but were able to recover and mount a late charge to push the #38 teami right to the checkered flag for second place in the SuperSport championship standings. The #07 VoomVoom.com’s recovery was helped by electrical problems in the #47 Silverline Buzzi Bullet that caused Jan Falkowski and Drew Langdon to drop back to fourth in the closing stages of the race.
The #46 Spirit of Portomaso boat and the #22 Big Sergio crew rounded out the finishers, while #59 Saho was forced to turn back to port before the race even started and #08 Phoenix 8 pilot Martin Lai missed his first Powerboat P1 SuperSport race in three years, due to engine problems.

viewing from land, I think Italcraft Panatta finished before Pignolo 53, still no mention of this on the official site
there seems also to be some errors in the points of Outerlimits and GFN Gibellato in the official site
Gibellato had 210 before Malta now should have 80 (2nd place Saturday) and 40 - 5th place Saturday total 330
Kiton should also be at 330 as they had 130 prior to Malta
on the VS Powerboat P1 the points are correct which makes GFN Gibellato and OSG the same points,
hope it gets fixed on the OS
about the OS I also am not seeing many photos as compared to the previous years, and the interviews seem to nearly concentrate on the same people
for e.g. I think the fact that Panatta was racing with the chartered old Metamarine due to problems with his new boat should have been mentioned, still no news about this
I think Panatta being a x-winner of P1 should be given all the importance, but still I say this should be given to all teams in Evo and SS
keep the races coming it was fantastic in Malta
