You're correct. I don't have the smartcraft display. Any idea besides the screen, if there is a simple way to tap into the smartcraft?

No simple way that I know. On Mercury's website they go into some detail as to different displays that can be bought and what each does. About $1,200 for the whole setup with large display. Actually, the large display is part of the GPS setup and will give you all kinds of informaion.
