280 Silencer Chime Walk
At 73-74 MPH my 280 Silencer 2000 starts to chime walk from left to right.....At that point I have to shut it down.....I'm thinking about a charger but I'm concerened the boat will be unsafe if I go faster.

When it starts to chine walk do you drop the tabs a touch???
NTP ;) |
By the way, What do you have powering this Silencer???
NTP  |
I'm running a 502 and I never did move the trim tabs down....I have them set at the top speed the boat will go......I was thinking maybe K-planes.........

are you running a stock 502? or???
are you reading speedo speeds or GPS? My stock 280 with 502 (stock) sees a maximum of 65 mph and I have just a touch of side to side walk which I settle by pressing the tabs down just to the level position and it runs just smooth. K-planes, sure they would be nice but as a rule are not required on the 280 since most of the speeds are under the 70 mph mark. Jeff |
My 280 never had this happen. Step hulls will have a very slight bit of side to side. They call it tick-tock. But always felt 100% in control. No tabs were needed. You may be triming it too high?!?!? Mine ran best the the trim needle JUST above the first mark on the gauge.

The engine is a 502 500hp I'm running a 28 pitch prop Lab FINISH $1,300.00 BUCKS...I JUST INSTALLED an MSD.....which helped a litle in the mid range...but did nothing at the top end.....I also had the boat's hull blue printed at the factory....$2,700.00....prior to delivery........the speed is 74 on a GPS and the boat walks left to right at that speed.....thanks for the reply

Hard to believe you have seen 74 mph speedo or GPS in a PQ 280 with a 502, what mods have you done to get 500HP??? Is that Dyno prop numbers?
Chine walk, trim the drive down a click, your over trimming looking for that extra 1 MPH, and add a bit of tab/Kplane. PQ is one of the dominating makers in our club, great boats overall. In fact we Rocked the Ches Bay today and the PQ's did great, the 340 is a very nice boat and does well in the bay. (we have three 2002 340's and a 2000 280 with a 502 in the HRPA) $2700, a whipple would bring better results than the hull blue print, I personally am not sold on that whole theory. I know Fountain does it standard on all their boats. Bryan www.hrpa.homestead.com/homepage.html [ 01-28-2002: Message edited by: 2001 26ZX ] |
Whipple or Pro Charger....I've been looking into both systems........I don't want to change the fuel injectors...The engine is a hp500 efi...I thought it was 500 hosepower....and the gps says 74 mph.....thanks....I'm not picking on PQ I like the boat....But if I'm going to go faster with a charger I would like the chime walk to go away....With a charger I understand I'll have to change the prop.........I can run the tabs down...That's not a problem......Thanks
