Let's see and hear about your Mods!
3 Attachment(s)
Okay, Let's find something new and fun to talk about. Let's see everyone's modifications and hear about your upgrades. I'm interested in possible header or manifold upgrades and your results.
Currently, I have a 95 PQ 270 Laser with 454 Mag 385 hp. Here's what I have done over the years. Bought boat in 2000 with less than 200 hours. I have since put about another 200 hours. Installed Gaffrig Redline gauges with red bezels, Insta trim tabs 12 x 16 tappered K-plane look, Insta trim tab gauge, corsa silent choice, swapped out Corsa muffler tips for 6 inch slash cut tips. In 2005 I finally broke down and bought new MSD 8.5 mm super conductor spark plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor and raised my rpms from 4600 to 4950. I had tuned it up before but never the wires. Wish I had done it sooner. I have also been playing with props. Bought 2 Mirage 21p to go along with my existing Mirage 21p and a Rev 4 21p on ebay this summer. I guess I am collecting Mirage 21p's. Well 2 are solid hub and one is plastic insert which I plan on selling. I plan on getting one labbed this winter by www.BBlades.com. For Fall/Winter projects nothing too exciting, but I am thinking of a new Dino red steering wheel with black grips and red cup holders from Trick marine. I'll post some pictures of existing mods once I get boat back from being winterized, oil change, drive removed and aligned, new impeller as preventative maintenance. I was told impeller should be done every 5 years and that's how long the first one lasted so I decided to do it now than have a possible problem next year. Look forward to hearing about your upgrades! |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
PQ 340 is my upgrade. It's all I can do to keep fuel in the tank to feed the twins! :D Thank goodness Merc finally redesigned the exhaust system on the HO's. If yours is still stock you should be looking to replace them. I put Eddie Marine on my 454 and Stainless Marine on my 502. Both were great improvements.
BTW, you were very lucky that impellor lasted 5 years. They should be replaced yearly due to fatigue on the rubber blades. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Hey Macklin, what was the gain on your 502s when you added Stainless Marine to them?
|
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
It was a single 502mag in a 272. Not much on the top end, but the mid range punch was improved. The real improvement was the sound....much throatier big block sound. I also put a Vortech flame arrestor on. That was a huge improvement over the stock as well. I believe that netted me a mph on the top end.

Well it's nothing real special! Added a new purple steering wheel and center cap, cup holders and shifter bezel as well as a new sound system with 2 -10" Alpine subs and 4- 6 1/2" 3 ways on top of a 1200 watt amp. This winter the plan is removing all the carpet in the engine compartment and going is a non-slip vinyl diamond plate covering with billet battery trays, Hate the carpet PQ puts in the engine compartment! It always seems to be wet and never drys out totaly.

Well,
I finally got a chance to post the pictures to my previous. (See above post). Here's a couple more. Had the boat home this weekend after winterizing. Gave it a good cleaning and will be putting it in storage until next spring. Yes, it's a sad day. I can't wait till next spring and summer. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Speed Demon, Are your tabs the origianls?? The look longer than the standard set.
|
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Fast Forward,
I added them when I bought the boat since it did not have any. The Tabs help out a lot in the rough stuff. When all the way down the boat plows through the waves as aposed to banging. I saw them on a PQ at one of the boat show in 99 or 00. When I called the dealer they couldn't remember. I ended up calling Insta Trim directly and they gave me a sweet deal. I think they are 12 x 16. As you can see one side is tappered a little. Just a little design feature I thought looked kind of cool and I thought the extra size couldn't hurt for only $50 more than the smaller ones. I saw your trend on chine walking. I am not sure if these would solve the problem. You may want to call PQ manufacturer and see what they suggest. Hope to catch up with you sometime. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
After I posted I went to Insta Rtims website. I have the dual ran Insta Trim tabs but they are the shorter ones. I had just e-mailed Martini for a price on a set of purple tabs but my guess is they'll run $400 plus. I'm thinking insta trim may be in the $100-$150 range for the lower tab section.
By the way were you at the PQ Rally? |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Yes and No. We were leaving for vacation that Sunday and I could not get the wife to agree to go to the rally. I did drive up to Mona lake on Saturday and raft off with the PQ'ers to watch the air show. I did really get to meet that many people since I didn't feel like crawling over everyone's boat. Also, had my neighbor and two young kids. Oh well, hope to make it next year.
Dinged my prop in that crappy channel. I still need to get it fixed. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
We were up for just the Saturday thing also. Sorry to hear on the prop!
We got caught up on a log for a bit but no damage. There were several people that hit things that day. All in all we enjoyed the afternoon and would be willing to go back. Just wish there would have been a better place to raft to meet more people. Wasn't sure how the crowd would be so the kids stayed home. Next year we'll bring them along. Seems to be a more family event. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Speed Demon, Just wanted to thank you for posting the pics of your tabs. I has going to order some Martini Tabs and called insta trim and save $250. Only difference is Martini's were purple and these will be black. For $250 savings black looks pretty good.

Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Fast Forward,
No problem. I hope they work great for you. Let me know how things turn out. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Speed. Just got the new tabs in today. The folks at Insta Trim made me a pretty good deal on a set of the 16" dual ram tabs. Holy cow!!!! Are thoose things heavy. 1/4" stainless flat stock! For some reason I thought they were aluminum. Much better quality over the Bennits.

Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Does anyone know if i can put bolster seats in...my 26 sls doesn't have them and i REALLY want them...if i can, do i get them from PQ (if they didn't shut down)....and how do i install them...thanks for your help!

Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
If I can locate my CD from the Rally I may have some pics
|
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
I am planning on taking the turbolator plates from my Mag HO exhaust manifolds. I also plan on installing diverters and less restrictive exhuast tips. Currently I have the Corsa Quick-n-Quiet II which exits the exhaust from the transom and the prop at the same time.
I would also like to, depending on funds, install a GPS speedo in the boat. And again, depending on funding, I need to upgrade the stereo with a sub woofer. Probably, in the end, I will be lucky to fill it with gas! |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Dave, what kind of tips do you have now? Mine came with the Corsa muffled tips. I replaced those with the non muffled Corsa tips. No real gain on top end, but MAN what an improvement on sound! But....it is nice being able to hit the exhaust switch in the no wake zones and while docking at restaurants and such. Keeps the non go-fast crowd from turning a mean eye.
It will be interesting to see what your gains are by removing the plates. I have read mixed results front what I have seen posted by others. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
Macklin,
I have the muffled Corsa tips also. We lease a covered slip (with a bunch of house boaters) and and you are right, it will be nice to shut off the sound if need be. The neigbors are pretty cool and we do not want to keep waking them up at oh-dark thirty. |

Here is the TV I put in, 20 incher :D I still have the trim piece being made at this time but it will go around the TV and with any luck take out the little bit of wobble I have left.
Im also doing the tunes, I elected to put the subs in the back of the gunnels. Dont have a clue how they will sound, just did not want to cut out two huge holes under the back seat and loose the storage. I will post more later. |
Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
My mods for the winter are a 54x80x16 shop that should be started on in the next month :evilb:

Powerquest 380,
What size sub did you go with? Did you in install 1 or 2? Did you build a box behind the sub? Thanks for the info. I am thinking of doing something similar. I my just try a Bazooka amplied tube. PWRQWST, Nice Shop! |

speed demon, I put in 2, 8 inch JL subs, one on each side. The guys did box them in as well. They used the same gray carpet, you cant see them and they take up no room at all. I think they will sound better than if they were under the back seat too. Being in a bit of a box should help, the sound wont just go into thin air.
here is a beter pic, ya cant get you head in there to see what your shooting so the pics suck a bit |

Re: Let's see and hear about your Mods!
I have two Alpine 10" subs under the rear seat myself and just bought 4 new 6.5 Audiobahn 200w speakers to go up front and beside the subs.

Thanks to the Stock battery holders that broke apart and had a battery crack in half, acid went every where and ruined the nice refinished motor 2weeks of being in use :( this is what the boat looked like before the dimond plating. The pics above show it is now all painted blue. Motor had to be pulled to be cleaned up.
The other Pics of is a poor shot of the gauges (sorry bout that) It shows the drive and tab indicators and the new hardin marine gauges. aren't they sweet!? Don't pay attention to that speedo, it had sand stuck in it. I hate that thing. |
