Default Painting Trim Cylinders

If I recall correctly a few of you painted your trim tab cylinders due to discoloring. What did you do to prep them (simply a wash down with thinner or paint with primmer)?? Also what type of paint did you use?? Due to the lousy weather today and no race on I decided to give it one more go at removing my old tabs. After two hour I was able to remove everything so the new tabs will be going on after all. But before I make the install I wanted to freshen up everything else.
