95' 257 Legend
I am looking at purchasing a 1995 Powerquest 257 Legend with a 454 and Bravo III drive. I have been searching for a Baja Outlaw, but this PQ is the right price and seems to be a quality boat. In searching the posts here it seems the only issue I may need to look at would be the sunpad hatch ram and wiring. Is there anything else I should be looking at? If you would like to comment, the boat is here: http://www.grandsportcenter.com/pop/...257_legend.htm
I am going to go for a closer inspection in the next few days. So feel free to comment on items I should be looking at. I plan to have the boat inspected should I decide to purchase. |
The bravo III is a very odd combo on this style boat and will be an issue with re-sale. The other major draw back is the black hull. Other than that one great boat. I'm just in the process of listing my 26 to move up to a 29. I'm in Lower SW Michigan pretty close to your area. I can send some pics if interested.
|
Yes, I would be interested in information on your boat.
Why do you say the Bravo III is an odd combination? |
My opinion.... the powerquest will outperform the Baja all day long. With the black hull you will probably need to invest in some top quality UV protectant wax and reapply frequently. Looks like a pretty good boat for a good price. Good Luck!!
|
How would you compare the quality of a Baja to the Powerquest?
I plan on finding out why the PQ decals are not installed on the sides or foredeck. That would be something that I work into any potential deal. I should be going there Monday morning to do a visual. You can make anything look good on the internet... |
The Bravo three was designed for larger heavier boats or boats that had issues with planning. My guess is someone special ordered this on as the Bravo III is very rare. You won't see the top end performance that would would see with the Bravo 1 and the resale will be an issue down the road.
As far as PQ boat go you can't go wrong. I am moving up again and looked at the 29 outlaws, but looks like I'll be back in a 29 PQ. If you want some info on my boat drop me a e-mail and I'll send some pics. Be sure to check the other one out as well. I can tell you there will be no disappointments with mine. [email protected] |
Bravo 3 on a performance boat BAD:mad:
|
I don't plan on flying through 3' seas with the thing.
I understand the shifting mechanism is different, it weighs more, and the counter rotating props eliminate torque steer. I also plan on storing the boat on a trailer. These are the only issues with a Bravo III that I can find. Is there something I am missing? I am hearing it is bad but why? |
What kind of weight range am I looking at with this boat?
|
4200 lbs for the boat itself without any gas/equipment or trailer.
Gas is 6 or 7 pounds per gallon. Not sure about your trailer though... |
Bravo 3
ENGINE CO 496
I HAVE OWNED THREE PQ'S. A 28 SINGLE 28, A 34 TWIN AND A 38 TWIN. ALL HAD BROVO 1's , NONE WITH TOURQUE STEER ISSUES. Take a quick look through the go fast classifieds, bet you don't find even 1 % of them with bravo 3's |
That boat has a lot of odd issues. Are you sure someone hasn't just sprayed the hull black? The Powerquest name may have been removed to paint. In the picture from the rear of the boat the stripe on the side looks taped off. The bolster seats are different than anything I have ever seen from PQ. This boat may have had pedistal seats and switched out to bolsters with PQ bases and different chairs.
The biggest issues are going to be trying to sell it when you are done with it. I don't think the black hull, engine and drive combination is going to appeal to many buyers. There are a lot of nice boats out there at that price. Good Luck! |
I am undecided on this boat after looking at it.
The black is stock. The stripe is a replacement, some of the photos show it when they were in the process of replacing it. They are not done yet. The bolsters stock or not were recovered. I would replace the carpet it has traffic patterns on it. I would repair a seam area on the sunpad. I would replace the steering wheel. Below decks is immaculate, twin 1000w amps in closet, Satellite ready stereo. The drive is a definate factor in the price of the boat, and a defianate factor when I decide to move on up. |
I have two other Powerquest's that I plan on looking at.
There is one at Shogren Marine-a bit pricey, and I want to look at Fast Forward's. The wife likes his use(Fast Forward's) of purple-her favorite color. It is never what the man likes or thinks that is the determining factor in a decision. The wife don't care how fast a boat goes, rather if it has the right color combinations. So she has the first word. |
I've seen Bravo III's on PQ's before including 2 - 1998 270'2 and 1 - 2000 260. I personally drove one of the 1998 270's that had a Bravo III and other than having a better hole shot and slightly less top end than a Bravo I boat, there was no difference in performance.
|
The boat was not bad, but I will wait to see how they finish cleaning it up. They just got this boat in, and were taking care of the striping and some cosmetic touches.
|
I am 99% certain that boat belonged to John Spoelhof, who was 50% owner of PQ with Kevin Hirdes after Todd Kamps sold out.
I worked at PQ from 94 to 2000 and I know John had a boat that looked just like that. I can't recall any other orders we built with that combo of black hull, pink wave graphics and a bravo 3 outdrive. I drove that boat for our company picnic one year giving rides to the employees. A 260 is a solid and very predictable boat. A 260 with a bravo 3 is even more solid and predictable. It will come on plane with virtually no bowrise and it will never slip or blowout. Also it will plane at very very low speeds if you plan to pull tubes or kids skiing. I know the colors are a little funky, but the black hull is pretty cool and it is definitely unique. I don't know who bought it from John but if that is John's old boat, I can tell you that it was impeccably maintained (he has a crew of guys that work for him full time and take care of his property and things) and probably had very low hours on it when sold. There is also an all red 290 Enticer out there somewhere that John had for a number of years. Another nice boat at the time. |
I was told that it was a one owner boat. The overall look of trailer, interior and gelcoat show the boat was probably stored indoors as the dealer states.
I have not ruled out the boat as a choice, but as stated above I would like to see it when they are done with the decals as well as any other maintenance they are going to do. There are other boats out there, so I am still shopping for that holy grail... |
Looks like I am going to purchase Fast Forwards PQ.

Here are some more photos of the black PQ I purchased from grand sport then had mitcher t put some color on it thanks boatnt.
|
Is that the black 26 that was for sale last year??? Or did you just have the sides painted black?
|
Yep ,thats the black 26 that was on the market last year.
|
What a shame the pink graphics are gone.:D:D
That looks fantastic!!! What a difference! |
Thanks I am excited about the upcoming summer!
|
I'd love to have something different done to my 26. Nothing major just maybe something added. Did he repaint the black or did they just buff it out??
|
By the way what are you pulling it with.Photo looks like a smaller truck??
|
No the pink was in the gelcoat so he scuffed it down reshot the black then did the graffics. As far as the top of deck goes that swish thats in there he changed the color to viper red added some airbrush highlights then incorporated the rest of the design around it.If your looking to add to your boat drop Mitch an email MitcherTcustompainting.com tell him what you would like to do send a photo also and ask him if he would come up with a design.it takes a couple weeks but he's great to deal with.Ya as far as my truck goes it's a little but she pulls it at 80 just fine the boat was an impulse by I had an 18 footer before this .
|
Only asking on the truck as I just sold my 1/2 ton and scaled down to a Toyota FJ. My wife has a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder which is rated to pull 6,000 lbs. I know we'll be over but we only tow it about 2 miles to the marina where it sits all summer and I tow it 300 yrds to the ramp. I figured it be just fine for those short distances. What are you pulling your 26 with??
|
It's a quad cab dakota with the small 8 it actually pulls it prettuy good I think it's rated the same as yours.
|
Well thats good to hear. Wished I had tried it over the summer. But than again never thought I'd get rid of the truck.
|
I hope you guys with the small tow vehicles are very careful around the crazies and alot of traffic! The one thing you need towing isn't as much horsepower as it is wheelbase and brakes! I tow with a suburban and still hate getting in traffic. I drove a truck for years....helps ta know what to expect outta the idiots on the road! I'm 1/2 way home from dragging my new to me 260 LX home from Ohio! Wouldn't ya know the weather would turn to crap! My nice shiney purtty is now covered in Ohio roadslim...ie salt. :-(
|
my buddy tows his 257all over michigan with a trail blazer says flat land its pretty good but does not like hills at all. definitly not my choice for tow vehicle I like to get to the lake the same day I leave.

I too got a new truck. We wound up getting a Mega Cab Ram. We also bought a Wellcraft Nova. Right now we are sorry we did not buy your boat, since we are currently looking to go larger. We bought smaller and cheaper to make sure the wife wants to get into this. |
Engine Co 454 Thats the never ending story of a boat owner. All in all I think we're glad you backed out . I really enjoy the boat and it's easy on the pocket book. The other great thing is I don't feel I have to get out on it every weekend due to cost. Not that I don't want to. Had you bought , we had a 29 all setup and after getting some seat time I've decided I liked my 26 a little better. But how know comes spring time and something catches my eye....... well you know the story.
Good luck in your search and yes I miss the truck. |

Hello boatnt-
I just came across this post - I was the original owner of this black hull Powerquest. I traded it to GSC back in 2007. I am trying to locate it to see if it is for sale. Do you still know the owner? |
