Raypanic splashdate!!!???

Ray,

I'm starting to think I may beat you to the water this year:p
I've recieved all my parts and will have some time off to start assembly of engines:cool:

Better hurry up!!! or are you still looking for the skinny person:p

Raypanic 05-02-2002 08:50 AM

I think I got it set I just have to remount the drives now. I fiddled with the alignment tool and pushed a little harder on it now it goes all the way in and out, Not with two fingers but I have to pull it with my whole hand. The other drive is dead nuts on and the tool goes in easier. This one takes a little more effort but I think with all the B.S. it is going to take to adjust the motor I will just let it go. I will be installing the first drive maybe today, But I have a "talent show" to go to tonite for my daughter. By the weekend for sure I will have the drives back on. After the drives are installed I need to Bleed the trim cylinders and Hydraulic steering. And I am waiting for new tie bar parts from BAM before it will be ready.

I need to figure out how I am going to run it on the hose I dont think the merc LWP Boot will work on the IMCO's and they dont make one either. I figured I would hook up a pair of rubber boots with a hose coupling in it :D

Then I need to finish the Hot Water heater (Tyler Removed) and pump hook ups. I ordered a Isotemp hot water heater I am still waiting for it to come in. I plan on mounting under the rear bench on the Port side pushing it as far in as I can. Once it is ready for the water this may be a next winter project depending on timing.

My marina does not start service untill May 15th, I may be ready for that following weekend. :D :D :D

P.S. Take lots of pictures!

here is how close I am to putting on the drives, Just need a little time

MikeStar 05-02-2002 01:06 PM

Ray, I like the 16 pound "Drive Installation and Alignment" tool leaning up against the transom...

"This *BAM* drive *THUD* is *WHACK* gonna *BOOM* fit, dammit!" :D

Raypanic 05-02-2002 03:17 PM

Sad thing I had to use it to get the gimble bearing in. It only took about 4 hits!:D

Well now I have had another setback

When will it end!

Scott 05-02-2002 05:41 PM

Ray,
I was getting ready to post a crack about the sledge then I saw your post:eek:

I will make a couple of calls

Raypanic 05-02-2002 06:30 PM

Thanks Scott but I allready decided to buy a new one, I called Marc at BAM and he is getting one right out to me.

I also called Tyler about the engine alignment, He said bring it up to him on saturday and he will take care of it while I wait. Cant beat that.

Scott 05-02-2002 07:17 PM

Well I guess you can disregard my email:rolleyes:
Thats great he is willing to help you out. Guess there are still some good folks out there.

I just had a positive experience with JimV from the board. They have been honest and helpfull. Can't wait to try out the new heads and cam combo!

Scott 05-02-2002 07:19 PM

Don't you have to pull the motor to replace that assembly? Or am I not thinking clear on how it's attatched:confused:

Raypanic 05-02-2002 09:43 PM

Nope thank god, It is just the Bell Housing, The actual part the drive bolts up to, I have to remove the pivot pins from the left and right side, Water feed line, drive fluid hose and driveshaft bellows. No big deal......we will see.

Raypanic 05-19-2002 02:16 PM

Getting Closer!

At this point I have all the drive work done, The new water heater installed and plumbed. I am still waiting on the transom shower parts and batteries from Optima - (Murrays) After that I will run it on the hose and then a little clean upand wax and I will be off to the lake. I am hoping for thursday. If I am any later it may not be until next week as Sassy's Marina is very busy over the holiday weekend and they said they did'nt think they could get me in. We will see.

Raypanic 05-25-2002 11:12 AM

It's Running!

I ran it today on the hose, A few problems but nothing major, The one engine will not idle down unless I pull on the throttle cable. It seems to need adjustment. The Starboard drive will not engage in forward, It will go in to reverse but when the shifter is forward it will not shift. I does go in and out of neutral but not forward. I may have a bad steering pump it seems to squeal a little, much more that the other engine. Well back at it.

Scott 05-26-2002 12:39 PM

Ray good to hear you got them fired up. I got my blocks back yesterday and found that they had not installed the new cam bearings:mad: So back they go! I am installing sea strainers and my steering hoses this weekend. I was able to get the new motor mounts installed and the allignment set last week. I'm on the right path just amazed at how much time it takes to do this stuff RIGHT.

Did you have a chance to bleed your new steering? from what I understand it takes three people (and one skinny guy):D
One at the helm turning the wheel, one at the resevoir keeping it full and one at the rear cylinders doing the bleed. Scott

Raypanic 05-26-2002 04:23 PM

Scott, I really didn't have any problem bleeding them. I started each engine and then cranked the wheel. It did make a squishy noise initally but then the wheel locked up all the way to each side and it seemed to bleed all the air out. I then started the other engine and it did the same but with less sputtering. The resevoir only emptied by half. The drives moved from side to side and made a "Hydraulic" sound similar to a tractor bucket or implement.

So really it was a one person job I expected more problems but it went real easy. I dont think there is any real amount of air left in the system as the drives are securly locked in there positions. So far it has been an easy one. - Knock on wood.

Raypanic 06-04-2002 06:42 PM

One step closer

I took the rig up to Tyler Crockett for a little adjustment and a Power steering pump replacement. Its ready to go, I dropped it off at the Marina in Algonac I wanted to take it out so bad. Unfortunatly it was raining like a SOB! The plan is for thursday morning :D

Scott 06-05-2002 10:03 AM

Ray,
Just a quick thought on the strainer shut off valves. I almost didn't bother with them the strainers are a lot higher than the pick-ups. Just put them in for insurance, never Know.

I hope your shake down cruise goes well on Thursday I'm sure you will post the results. I am finishing the motors this weekend and should be up and running the following week.

Scott 06-07-2002 08:36 AM

Ray,
How did it go?:D

MATTT 08-12-2002 12:30 PM

Hello, everyone.

Is it just me, or does the mechanic knowledge came with boat when you bought it ? I can do a little here and there but taking the drive out and working on it is like speaking a different language to me. Did you guy learn that from some marine mechanic training ?

Later,

Mattt.

Raypanic 08-12-2002 01:49 PM

I do alot of research first, like this website and I bought repair manuals and read them. I have always been handy with tools and electrical too. To me it is mostly using common sence and having patience. You should know how to combine cuss words too (Occasionally)

Scott 08-13-2002 07:35 AM

Matt,
I am pulling my drive this week the hardest part is getting the boat to the trailer. Working on a drive is a lot easier than pulling a motor. Most of this stuff is not rocket science as long as you like Ray said do the research! If I get in a tight spot or am not sure about my next move I call and get the answer.

Ray,
no I did not blow a drive but it may be on its way:eek: I keep loosing my adjustment for forward and reverse. So I am going to yank it and check it over:cool: Before it becomes pieces parts!

MATTT 08-13-2002 03:43 PM

raypanic, Scott

I would love to get an actuall shop manual. The one I bought at the marine store does not cover much. So few pictures and not enough detail on anything. If you could point me to where I could order a manual that you have I would be appreciated.

thanks,

Mattt.

Raypanic 08-13-2002 06:53 PM

The manual I have is Merc # 90-863160 it is Bravo sterndrive #28. You can get it through http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/P...e/homepage.asp

Just feed in your serial number for the drive and or engine and look under Miscellanious information for parts manual and service manuals.
