My father used to trailer his 38 Avenger with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It wasnt even the 5.9. It pulled it fine from Wisonsin to Illinois and back several times. No problems at all. He also towed with a Dodge Ram with the 5.9. My father has also pulled a 35 ft Sea Ray with a one ton Ford truck...a long distance. Then we drew a crowd when he backed it down a launch ramp in Racine, Wi, and put it in like it was a trailerable boat!

28silencer, your father is lucky he did not get into trouble towing a 38 Avenger with a Grand Cherokee. That is crazy. If there had been any "situation" occur, the Avenger would have had its way with the Cherokee.
If you are going to tow a large boat get a tow vehicle that can tow it, safely. I am not saying this for the tower's sake. If a person is crazy enough to tow a 12,000 lbs package with a short wheelbase vehicle that weighs 3500lbs, they deserve what they get. Its the poor sole that is involved in this person's "incident" that I am concerned about.

I second that! we are all on the roads
I had my 26' come throught the back window of my 96 cherokee @ 60 mph. Long story but the ball did not seat properly even though the clasp engaged and my lock went through. Maybe I could have sued Fulton? that should have never occured. Did $2500 damage to the back of the Jeep and only scuffed the bow rubrail, it actually wedged itself through the rear hatch and stayed straight while I pulled to the side. My boys thought it was cool, my wife sits on eggshells now when I tow, and it took a month to get the smell out, if you now what I mean.
O'yeah, we still went boating that day

Wow
Now that's a ride I hope I never take. I remember a guy in our Power Squadron course we took back in '83 saying that if you tow a boat (or anything else) long enough, at some point in time you will have the opportunity for it to come loose from your tow vehicle (even if you check it after towing a couple of miles, which I do). I dread the day it happens.
But Kentz, it's already happened to you. Your GOLDEN man
Enjoy.
And I am impressed, you followed through and accomplished the goal and went boating
You da man

Ouside of the obvious reasons such a self-preservation, I would worry about overloading the tow vehicle for another reason. What if an accident occurred- You might have more legal problems if a smart trooper or lawyer did his homework. Negligence is one word that comes to mind.
A friend of mine gave me a homemade reciever hitch years ago- I told him to trash it. He was dumbfounded until I explained that I would not tow with an un-rated hitch, even if it was over-built.
