81 Mph

I ran the 380 again yesterday out on lake Huron, best I could manage was 81 Gps. I am still expecting more but so far thats it. I changed the prop after the boat was lifted out for the rack to 30" B1's but the weather didn't coperate. I was running 28P B1's when I hit the 81. I was running about 4500 rpm. Going to the 30's seems the wrong way but I believe the 28p's that came with the boat have been jacked up some and they are definatly not 28's The 30's are stock and should give me a baseline to go from.

I did have the trim most the way up. It seems the boat doesn't want to let go of the water. No bow steer experienced yet.

It puked out a glob of black stuff agian. It only seems to happen when I am at full throttle and in the boost range. It seems to blow out the dip stick. The stick was out about 2" after my high speed run. I need to talk to the engine builder.

Despite my problems my wife and I had a great three days. It was hot but the water was cold. Heck I even taught her how to bring it up on plane. After she did it a few time she said it was easy and drove from Port Huron back to Algonac. ( at about 50 MPh.)

Scott 06-26-2002 07:31 PM

Ray,
I won't post my speeds;) But I do have a question, do you still have the 32's I may need to buy them:D  I ran out of prop on my last speed run:p

Raypanic 06-26-2002 07:48 PM

Scott, Yes I do have the 32's. You want to give them a try? I can install the "little" propshaft hubs for you no problem. Let me know. Hmmmm.......... 30P 1.5 drive banging the limiter I'd say 82Mph.

MooseKnuckle 06-26-2002 09:04 PM

Ray, when I looked at your boat (98), it did not contain the hull modification of the newer boats. PQ trimmed about 2' off the rear strakes/chines (don't remember which) because the boats were not performing as well as they wanted. Something about trapping air under steps instead of releasing.

I thought some other guys on the board had PQ modify the hull. I'm sure you would see a good speed increase once done.

Mike

jmackin 06-26-2002 09:55 PM

That would give you 5+ mph if you had that done. Have you talked to PQ again? I dont know who to tell you to talk to now that Kevin is gone. Damn I miss Kevin!

Wildman1 06-26-2002 10:12 PM

82mph

Ihad have 99 38pq with 500hpefi. will do 82mph on gps with 30p b1. Took boat back to pq winter of 2000 and had 2' of bottom cut off. Boat settle down in the water better and give it a better ride and no chime walking., but didn;t pickup and speed. I'm going to change props to 32's because I'm pushing 5200 rpm. My 30's are lab finish. send my 28's back during the winter and had them lab finish, let the rpm turn to 5400 but slow the boat down to 76mph. I can only trim out to 2 on the trim tabs before Istart blowing out. I believe the X dem. on pq boats are set to high. They are trying to rubn high x dem. so they can use stock power. I still believe I had one of the fastest 38pq with 500hp out there . The beak nose boats fear it. Ha Ha

Raypanic 06-26-2002 10:13 PM

Thanks Guys, I am familiar with the mods, 30" off the strakes and no hook. (I took a look at Scott's boat a couple of weeks ago.) I figured I would run it the way it is this season and have the work done in the fall/winter. I will contact the factory but feel an independant glass guy may be a better choice. Some one that can do the work right the first time.

It went pretty well though, I hit high 70's with no problem I had to eek the lat two MPH out of it. Stangely enough I had it trimmed all the way out. I may get a little more by trimming in a little but I still need more time. I am hoping a set of tru props will give me mor of a clue to things. My wife gets nervous at that speed (and I do a little too) And the next few outings will be with the children. So no high speed runs soon, unless I can get them to get out at a sand bar - not likely...

Kentz 06-26-2002 10:13 PM

Maybe you should borrow Interceptor232's equipment, bound to improve your speed numbers:D :D :D :D

Raypanic 06-26-2002 10:22 PM

Wildman, Thanks for the info, I am running 1.34 Imco gears, I assume you are running 1.5's I think I should be close with the 30's and 650+ Hp each.

I hear both sides of the story, The guy at PQ said they did the mods to meet the published speeds advertized and others say is was a handling issue - Factory said no. I have not seen the chine walk problem at all, I have about 10 hours on it now and really other than being a little dissapointed with the speed it all seems fine in the handling aspects to me. I hope it gets better with the mods. Plus this is my first boat of this nature, I thought my TA handled well until I got my Audi, now it seems so unrefined.

SCOTT, I wll deliver the props if I can get a "demo" ride how's that for a deal.

Raypanic 06-26-2002 10:24 PM

Kentz, good one! :D :D :D :D

Scott 06-27-2002 09:00 AM

Ray,
Sounds good I may be trailering it in the near future (some club events near toledo). If your serious I would be happy to take you out on a trial run:cool:

My numbers were very close to 80 just not quite there. This was on Monday when the temps and humidity were high. In the past I would of been lucky to hit 75 with those conditions. I have only set base timing and have a few more things to check out so I'm hopeing for higher #'s. I was also running with a little tab dragging I'm just a little nervous running WOT for any lenth of time with only 2 hours on the motors. I guess I need to take of my skirt and have at it:eek:

BillR 06-27-2002 04:33 PM

Wildman1:

If I read your post correctly, you have a set of 28P B1's that you are not using?

If that is the case, you want to sell em???

Thanks

Kentz 06-27-2002 09:03 PM

Wildman - as I recall weren't you hitting mid-80's when you had installed the prochargers on the original stock 502's?

Wildman1 06-27-2002 10:07 PM

kentz

prochargers we were hitting 87mph. boat was chime walking over the place that's why I took it back up to the factory. As I said before pq are not a true v bottom because of the pad. Still all and all I am please with the boat. It's turn key now, and the 500efi have the aswsome sound. 82mph is still fast enough on the river or lake.

Wildman1 06-27-2002 10:12 PM

b1 28 p props are for sale 800 apiece, use them one time up at Brookville lake in May. Boat only ran 76mph. E-mail me or call 859-653-7321. I'll probably have the 30p for sale as soon as the 32p get here. They are lab finish also.

h2owarrior 06-27-2002 10:26 PM

Wildman1 Do you mean the Brookville Lake in Indiana ? I grew up about 10 Min's from that lake. Its not really big enough for a 38 foot boat, let alone one that goes 80 mph:eek:

Let me know when/if your going back. We'll have the Thunder there before Summer is over:D :D It's only 37 feet:rolleyes:

Dave F 06-29-2002 07:02 AM

So, am I understanding that 99 38's are not handling quite right at high speeds?
What's this about hull mods?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm out "kicking tires" and 99 38's are some of the tires I'm kicking.

This is the first I've read about this kind of thing, So you guys fill me in.

DAVE

MIdnightRider 07-01-2002 06:31 PM

Maybe you could offset the chine walking by taking some of the frozen dinners out of the freezer, and adding a few tubes of ben gay to the medicine cabinet in the bathroom.:D . MIdnight:cool:

MIdnightRider 07-01-2002 06:33 PM

Either way, chine or no chine, I turn tale when I see those PQ's coming!:D MIdnight:cool:

I had it out Saturday and Sunday with the 30" P B1's. I could not take it up to the max as I had the Kids, wife and the dog on board. But I am running about 300-400 higher RPM with the 30"'s over the 28"'s I knew the 28's were cupped but according to the calculator they are spinning like 32's. I am having the 28's re-worked back to true "labbed" 28's". I think the 30's will perform well but I need another high speed run to tell.

I am trailering the boat tomorrow and bringing it back to the shop for some repair/mods. I am still having the black gunk showing up in the bilge. I believe it is coming from the seawater pump and it appears to be a seal failure just behind the pully. I also got in my Gaffrig Outlaw mufflers and I have to pull the pipes inorder to mount them. (I need to drill a 1/4" bolt hole in the tops.) I also bought two drive temp guages and will be installing them also. This should work out good as over the 4th I am staying at home to see the fireworks on my little lake. Hopefully I will have the work done in a week or so.

One more $$$$ bummer I need to buy a new tie bar as the latham setup will hit the new mufflers when in the trailer position.

Here is a few picts of last weekend:

The props made it to my house and I will try them out sometime this week or weekend thanks again. Scott

I am on the run right now trying to take care of bus. and fitting in the holiday. My OSO time is very limited so as usual call me if you need me:D Have a great Fourth!!

hp500efi 07-02-2002 01:54 PM
