Clinton Marine. His sons ran GRB Marine at LOTO. Many of the Bajas that Clinton Marine sold went down to LOTO and were delivered by GRB. Ended up getting him in trouble with Baja when Big Thunder at LOTO complained GRB was dealing Bajas at the lake through Clinton Marine. At the time Big Thunder was the largest Baja dealer in the country. Ended up with Clinton losing the Baja dealership in central IL.

Ouch!!!!! Greed will bite you in the ass.

Mentalpause 06-05-2012 10:42 AM

Didn't really matter in the end. GRB and Big Thunder closed their doors a number of years ago at LOTO. There were so many Bajas sold at LOTO there was plenty to go around for both dealers. I took my PQ in for service at Big Thunder one year while I was on vacation there and it was a very bad experience. Went from there directly to GRB and they diagnosed and fixed the problem that same day.

Some of the employees at Big Thunder took a customers Outlaw out while it was in for service and partied on it. Someone damaged the headliner in it and they tried to screw it back up to the deck, screw went all the way through the deck and the sharp end was sticking up above the deck. Obviously too much alcohol involved. But not a place you want to take your boat for service.

Josh,

Sorry you live an area where the Baja owners are like that. But don't group them all together like that. I live in a heavy Baja area too (really the midwest is heavy Baja area) and owned 3 myself(all together 7 in my family). Most of the folks around here that I with are Baja owners and don't act like that. Can't speak for them, but I love all powerboats and will talk boats with anyone, and about any boat. I have drooled over Sunnys, Profiles, PQs,etc etc that have parked next to me.

For my area, just in the past few years have we seen a large influx of other brands start showing up. And a big problem is alot of the powerboat owners from my area are not on the boating websites. So yeah alot of them might not be up on other models.

Guess I'm just saying, don't hate on all us Baja guys....we aint all bad.

If your ever down on the Ohio at Evansville, In. Give me a shout and lets drink a beer and talk about PQs, Baja, Cigs, C-mates etc til blue in the face.

I don't. Like I said my buddy has a 33 outlaw (Butt he sure does love it :drool1:), another has a 26 fountain, and a couple other open bow and ski boats. I love anything that has a motor and I can drive it! I just never understood arrogance from someone that I don't personally know, yet 90% of the guys around here have never heard of another manufacture other than Baja. If you ever met me you'll know that I'm the most laid back guy that loves to go fast (of course I own a 290, so not that fast on the water), drink beer, and just chill with GOOD people!

boatnt 06-07-2012 07:25 AM

Hey I owned 3 Bajas in the past,,thats back when I was a pric.k...since I switched to PQs people love me...:lolhit:

Actually more like 3 feet.

are you talking about the deck or the hull??

jmeng 06-07-2012 08:33 AM

Hull. On the powerquest, the length (28') includes the swim platform correct? Not the case on the Baja Outlaws. So when you knock off 2' for the platform its more like 26'. Making it about a 3' difference.

Just to make it clear, this isn't a knock on Powerquest. Most (or all) the companies with molded in platforms include them in the measurement.

yeah you are correct but...

the better design hull that the 280 has with a step in it a notch transom a raise x and a delta pad more than makes up for the extra 3 feet the old design straight V hull thats on the bottom of the 290..

and you must know that because for a twin engine boat your not that much faster..

but both nice boats ...

Why are we having this discussion on our page? Why didnt we muddy up the baja forum?

Seems like I've stepped into a little Baja hate. Just trying to help the original poster with his question. Y'all have a good one.

no no,,,no Baja hate here I like Bajas I like all boats,,if they float they are good enough for me..for all I know my next boat might be a baja,,

I, like you wanted the original thread started to know the difference as well..good or bad..

you have a nice day as well..

Josh LaFountain 06-07-2012 10:33 AM

Im guilty for hijacking the thread and stirring the poop. It was fun getting everyone fired up. Im gonna try to run a 29 Ol at the poker run in a couple weeks and have my fiance video it with my phone. If hes stock i think i can take em. Should be interesting.

Are you running stock power and if so what top speeds are you seeing on GPS

jmeng 06-07-2012 11:25 AM

With the procharger you shouldn't have any trouble with any stock power 29. I have 496 mags. 70mph everyday, 72 - 73 with everything perfect. The 496HO boats run upper 70's.

Josh LaFountain 06-07-2012 01:36 PM

It would be a race if i swelled up on one with HOs
Bblades are working on my prop situation. Im getting 26% slip witg a 30p b1 at 5200 on the rev limit at 73. Thay sent me a hydromotive P5 to try this weekend and if thay can get my slip down to mid teens ill be in the low 80s id be happy with 80 flat.

You should talk to bob280silencer on the board. He's from down here and had a 280 with big power. Pretty sure he had it running in the 80's. Might be able to compare notes on setup/props.

That is extremely high....what is your prop shaft height?

One inch lower than stock. I have a one inch spacer on the lower. The 280 has a rep of running high slip% because the step is so big it boiles the water at the prop depth. Thats why the BBlades guys are testing that 5 blade. Its made for high X dimension hulls with steps. Thay said we will have to play with the prop depth to tune it all in. May have to go with a 2 inch spacer or possible lower the gimble. Thoes guys are the best and im confident thay will get it all it has to offer.

I still have 2 weeks and im testing and getting info from experts
A few times a week. Were gonna start playing with prop height as soon as that 5 blade comes in. Should be here tuesday. Im excited to see the results. If we can get the slip down to atleast 16% ill be fine.

Maybe Ive just been lucky but my 18 year old Powerquest didnt have one stress crack and neither does my 24 year old Wellcraft. Im sure alot depends on where you boat. Im mostly in lakes with 2-3 footers so the hull isnt getting pounded to death.

How far below the keel is your prop shaft? What you're saying is the the the step is so big it's boiling the water that far below the keel? I don't see how stuffing the drive farther down is going to make you go faster. Drag is drag, right?

I assume the point of the prop going lower in the water is to get it below the bubbles created by the step. The prop wil obviously not bite the water if its full of air. When i start running the 5 blade im going to try to take the spacer off and if i loose top end ill know i need to go deeper with the prop. Its just trial and error and hopefully some success somewhere in this testing.

Wellcraft makes a great boat.

Pete280 06-11-2012 10:58 AM

IMO, the 280 was PQ's first stepped hull so they were experimenting with drive height somewhat, the prev owner of my old 280 installed a 1" spacer and picked up at least 2mph, he said it wouldblow out without the spacer. I had a basically stock 502mpi w/ gil exhaust and saw 69.5 gps, not bad for a 502

Thats what ive heard also. Mine had a 1" spacer on it when got it. The only prob is it leans to left a bit with a spacer due to prop TQ. Bob280 told me his did it too and he took the spacer off and it didnt do it anymore. Mine also has a low water pickup " because of the air that the step creates" it needs it so it wont suck air in the cooling system.

Im draggin this out of the archives. Didnt get to run any 29 OL at poker run. I did however have one fall in my lap yesterday on the river. It was perfect timing. I had 5 people in my 280. 2 full coolers and a half tank of fuel. The 29 OL runs up beside me with only 2 guys in it and throws his hand forward " we all know what that means" so he hammers down and pulls me a boat and i do the same. We ran about 2 miles and i pulled him. 5 boats. 3/4 thru the race i was 2+ boats out in front and we blew by some friends of mine tied up on the bank. Thay enjoyed the show. My fiance who is scared of speed on rough water was scrambling to get her phone to video it and almost droped it out of the boat so she didnt get any video. But i have 8 witnesses " not counting the guys in the baja"..

To finish this post id like to quoat a local baja dealer in the ohio river vally that is an ex PQ dealer "BAJA IS THE BAYLINER OF PERFORMANCE BOATS" un quoat. This didnt come out of mouth. Just passing it on from the biggest baja dealer in Louisville area.

Knot 4 Me 07-02-2012 10:33 AM

Pull the dash on a Bayliner and pull the dash on a PQ. Get back to me on which one has the better wiring. :lolhit: :evilb:

Josh LaFountain 07-02-2012 11:59 AM

Awesome. Im gonna trade my boat in for a bayliner. All you baja guys should too. Hell you might as well trade that high performance chaparral in for one too.LMFAO
