The 290 at 73 mph is a great speed, any faster and she chines..I have gotten mine up to 80 mph but she was hell to keep her from going side to side.
On another note I need some help with the ignition switch and lanyard wiring diagram...my friend took my dashboard apart and now neither engine starts up independently..both key switches need to be turned on at the same time....a quick picture of the key switch would help greatly...THANKS

Anybody still watching this thread? I have a 290 and am in the process of upgrading the engines. Looking to add about 200 hp per engine. My boat was a handful at 63 mph with the old steering and 3 blade props. Switched to full hydraulic and 4 blades and its very solid now. Also was asking around about chine walk and someone (engineer) suggested that aluminum heads and intake may help reduce the chine walk. Less mass up high will have less influence. Not sure if anyone else has gone this route or not. My goal is not to run in the 80's but do want to be in the 70's. Also current cruise speed is 50 at 3500rpm and I would like to be around 60 at 3500. My current props are Bravo 1 - 24 pitch. Any thoughts on what pitch I might use if I added the 200 hp per engine?

I checked with them and they had no record of a 290 doing anything. They do have Jeff ???? in his 280 going something like 82mph.

I remember talking a guy on Lake Erie w/one w/stock 454’s and I guessed it ran mid 60’s and he was pissed!

Told me it was an 80 mph boat!

Knew he was lying but he stuck to the story and I apologized and left!

Truly was admiring his boat but what a dick!

His woman was on board so…..

Never forget that 😂

Lol!!!! Another boater whose speedo does not work.....at all. Back in the 90's my wife and I took a test ride with a salesman on funny enough, a PQ 290 Enticer. Cruising along probably less than 50 and the salesman said we were cruising EASILY 70mph or so. The speedo on that boat did not work either.

This was back when the Shootout was held in front of Shooter's 21. Would have been around the early to mid-2000's. My buddy with a 290 remembers the boat and he too remembered it being out of Canada and he thought it ran closer to 100. I just remember it was in the 90 MPH range but don't remember the exact speed. As you see above others in this thread remember the boat as well.

So there's another guy with a 290 here in Grand Haven that installed a pair of 509's putting down 600hp each and he said that he is still looking for the right props however, with 8 people on board and a full tank of gas he said he hit 77 mph GPS. Wow! I hope to run with him soon and see how fast he really is.

I’m currently building my 290 a pair of 500+hp mercs, added full hydraulic steering, and 280 Mayfair 22” trim tabs, and am going to play with the props…hopefully I can break the code on the chine walk issue and not just my bank account.
