That would be a nice step up for size. The only thing I would be concerned with is the “refresh” on the 454mpi’s. I am always a little perplexed why so many boats for sale always same engines just refreshed or rebuilt, especially on stock engines. In my mind, I would be wondering what the reason for the refresh was, and more importantly who did it and what did it consist of. There is no reason Mercruiser Black engines can’t go a minimum of a 1000 hours with just normal maintenance. I have a touch over a 1000 hours on 502 mpi mags that still run as good as they did with 200 hours. I would personally rather buy a higher hour maintained untouched stock engines than low hour rebuilds.

I have a 2001 260 SX, 496 Mag (stock) with 1186 hours. Bought it new Jan. 2002 and have never had to add a quart of oil (knocking on wood). Have had to replace the transom assembly (steering pin worn), replaced the upper on the B1 outdrive. The boat runs as good as it did when new. Still get 4800 rpms & 62 mph on GPS. I too cruise 3500-3800 rpms & always do a short WOT every outing. If maintained properly, I don't know how far they will go. I tell all my friends that the boat has been used but not abused!!

Well, thanks for all the advice you guys provided. After a long talk with my wife we decided to take the plunge and pick it up. This is our first real performance boat so we really don't know what to expect. I had it out Sunday with my daughter and we had a blast. Ten fold smoother on rough water than the old bowrider and I figured we would just cruise around but quickly found out it was more fun ripping on the throttles.....lol. Good bye fuel (i know it isnt crap compared to what some of you guys burn in a day but it was a huge jump for us......lol). Anyways just wanted to say thanks for all the guys that replied as well as the numerous guys that PM'd me with personal experience. I'll try and post up a few photos.........
