38 Powerquest...

Anyone have a 38 PQ with 496 HO Mags, if so, what speed are you getting? Props, setup, etc. Friend is considering a 2002, fully loaded, A/C, etc.

Thanks in advance.

not me but if I remember correctly, it is a 71-73 mph set up. The 500's are a better way to go but add more money. The 2002 has the better hull design.

Good luck.

I'd agree with HP500. As a reference the 34 loaded with every option does 78-80 on 496HO's and has even been known to get 81-83 with the right prop set-up. Therefore the added weight of 1000 pounds puts it 71-73+ mark.

What is different with the 2002 hull design?

I have a 2002 38 Avenger with the 496 Mags and run 28p 4 blade props. My boat doesn't have air but we usually run heavy because of overnight's. The top speed on my 38 is 71 miles an hour on the gps.

Interesting, when I bought my last boat in 2000, I ran a 34 viper with twin 502s. At the time I owned a 27 PQ. There was no gas in it because we ran out when I was out with the salesman. 4 of us in the boat. Ran it on LOTO, hot August day, LOTO is 660 ft above sea level. Ran 68 on GPS. Maybe it just needed some tweaking in the setup.

Those are some strong HOs in that boat if it is running 80+.

Like Mentalpause I also drove a 34 with 502 but I was able to get 71 on GPS on the Illinois river back in late fall of 2001. I own a 99 38 with 525sc's 4 blade 30 pitch props and 12" boxes, the best I have been able to get is 74.9 on GPS. I do load the boat up since we stay on it almost every weekend though. I am hoping to get it to 80 but will see.

Mentalpause when is the new ride do in? If I dont see before I'm sure I will see you down at the St Louis show.

Hi Rich. Are you all winterized? I am going through withdrawals since being boatless since Labor day. You know me, I always found a way to boat each month through the winter. New boat is doing well. Go here for pics. Still hoping to be done mid summer. The plan is to go with 525s but wondering when Merc is releasing their new engine between the 525s and 1075s. I may consider something else if it makes sense. I will be at the Miami show this year too.
