2X SSM 5 Props needed
Anyone know of or have any SSM V or VI props I could use for a day? Would be willing to pay a non-refundable deposit just to get an idea of what I need. I will take care of shipping, or come pick up.
16.5"-17" dia 29-34 pitch 4 or 5 blade - cleaver style prop Also if anyone has this setup, what is a good target prop? 1990 Top Gun - non-stepped SSM 5 drives, even with the bottom, on 12" boxes Notched transom 1.5 : 1 ratio drive 1080 HP per side @ 5600 RPM Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am striking out here. Thank you! -Justin |
I have built a couple of 38 Scarabs and Cigarettes with Speedmasters IIIs Vs VIs the 38 straight bottom boats with around a thousand HP on a 1.50 ratio we run a 17.5 dia 29 to 31 pitch depending on the drive height and weight of the boat. I would recommend that you start with at least a 17.5 dia prop big V bottoms love diameter. I have a set of 17.5 x 31 4 blades that you can try but they are not for sale they belong to a boat under restoration so we wont be needing them any time soon.

^^^ That's pretty valuable info, thank you. Have you run 5 blades on that setup? Better results with the 4 blades?
I am probably more interested with planing ability, cruise, and handling than all out top speed. |
Saber Marine / Doug, your PM is full,,,
in response to your message. OK, what pitch? I am going to test hopefully this weekend. I will let you know if I plan to purchase after I know more about what the boat likes, I appreciate the response! -Justin |
frickstyle,
We have a test program just for your needs. I advertise and talk about it all the time. The program let's you try without buying. Here is a link to the program. Call us if we can answer any other questions and set you up in the program. http://bblades.com/hering-6-offshore...-demo-program/ Thank you, Brett |
Brett,
Yes, I understand that option and have spoken with you. Thanks, just can't justify the expense right now for the Herrings. Maybe that will change here soon. I will keep it in mind. |
Thank you for the response.
My intention was not just to sell props but to allow you to test props for a fee as you stated, and then use that base line information to better shop for the props you desire. Let us know if we can help in the future. Brett |
we have run both 4 and 5 blades the higher the x the more blades help you get on plane easier. Just letting you know what I have that you can test with.
|
Gil mentioned he gave you my number. I've got a set of 17x 30 4 blades. Not for sale but you can try them.
|
Thanks guys, should have a pretty good direction next week after testing, I'm all set until I find out how it reacts to these test props.

1990 Kevlar Gun, notched transom, 950 - 1000 HP, #6 Drives mounted 1/4" below the hull.....17x32 Four Blades. No slip getting on plane and Cruised 65mph at 3800 RPM.
|
Perfect, that's what I was thinking. 17" x 32 4blades, then send to BBlades if anything needs tweaked.
Thanks everyone!!! |

OK, so first time it hit the water yesterday, could not get on plane. Any help out there??? SSM 5 - even with bottom 4 blade Merc props 16.5" diameter X 32pitch, was told "labbed" to more of a 34 pitch blade. I am thinking not enough diameter for how high the props are.
We plowed water not going anywhere at about 4500 RPMs, no chance of getting on plane, just couldn't turn the boat over to get up on top of the water. Tabs were buried too. Need help so I can get out there for what little season is left. |
Congrats on hitting the water, I'd say 17" diameter minimum
|
I had a similar issue with mine first time out, kept blowing the prop's out, then I remembered the tabs were about 1/3 of the way down, moved them up to neutral and the boat nosed over and I was off. Mine has 380's on it, and I know your higher X than mine.
|
We tried first with the tabs neutral or all the way raised. Then we buried the tabs and no change, thinking it's a diameter issue. I am also sure 5 blades would help, but I need to establish a baseline with 4 blades before spending big money on 5 blades.
Anyone run a 17.75" dia with this setup? |
More diameter !! 17.5 min. bigger dia the better
|
5 blade test props available at BBLADES in known sizes. Plus experience to boot.......
You tried 4 blade 32's Labbed to more like 34's? Hmmm? I think we might be able to help. Brett |
17 3/4 x 27 4 blade 900/side. 3000 rpms.. 10 seconds on plane
Cup numbers horizontal along right hand side (.100+) Other props (4 and 5 blades) with cup numbers in the .45 range = either could not plane at all or a 4500+ rpm 30 second burnout. http://33outlaw.zenfolio.com/img/s2/...63030030-3.jpg |
I have a pair of Herring 18 Diameter, 28 Pitch, 5 Blade, 18 rake props I may sell to you if you are interested. They have about 10 hours on them. They are the wrong prop for my 1994 Cigarette Top Gun with Arneson ASD7M drives. If you know anyone with18 diameter 6 blades, let me know. 29-32 pitch????? I also have some Mercury 4 blades that are worthless to me. I think they are Mercury 26 spline 15.5 - 16.0 inch Diameter, 4 blade 28 pitch props. Not sure. I could not get on plane with them and I have not looked at them since...... David....cell phone 281-743-5390
