Default Checkmate 280ZT Prop of Choice

Guys,

A buddy picked up a 280ZT with the 502MPI for cheap last fall. It seems to be a bit short of expectations (not bad). We had it strung out to ~4750RPM right at 60GPS. It currently has a B24 prop on it and I'm wondering if it' the right prop. I'm told a Mirage Plus 23 might be a better choice. Any insight?

Thanks. Brad.

What were the conditions? How many people in the boat? Amount of fuel? Condition of prop? Condition of outdrive, drive shower setup? 502MPI should be closer to 5,000 wot for peak power. A 23p Mirage Plus will be faster, but not handle and hook as well.

Sabo,

Typical conditions for a small inland lake; minimal wind shop. 3/4 Tank; not sure how much that is. Two guys; 400ish lbs. No idea on the drive, but nothing seems amiss. Boat seemed almost TOO stable; almost like it was glued to the water. He's got a 23M+ on the way. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks. Brad.

With decent density altitude, normal load, health motor, a 280ZT with stock 502mpi should see mid 60's give or take. Check the outdrive, little things like: added skeg guard, dual pickup drive shower or drive shower pickups too long ect can add up and affect performance. Let us know how the 23M+ goes

My 1994 502MPI Mag's in my old Fountain (V-Belt, VST, MEFI1) if I recall the limiters were 5100. I'd check the tune up parts/ compression unless you've done it already. Reason I say that is mine was in hideous shape when I got it, injectors absolutely horrible and all the tune parts were garbage.
