34 Coyote (The Old Putt-Putt)

This is a project of epic proportions. http://www.joesboats.com I have been working on it for a while. I lost a few pics but basically Pressure washed the hell out of the thing to get rid of whatever i could. Then I cut away the glass that was ruined. I relaminated the hole cut by the FD and reinforced it on the inside with 24oz cloth 2 layers.

Today I have been chasing down delam and its really bad. I am sure I will have to actually rebuild a 12 foot section of the hull on the port side. I am not really pleased about that.

Am I just being an idiot trying to resto this thing? :cartman:

I don't know the answer to your question but by the look of those pictures you have a monster product on your hands. You are either a genius or a mad man.

rchevelle71 10-26-2012 07:04 AM

Best part of those pics is the dog peeking thru the transom!!!! It can be rebuilt, but your gonna need time, money and skills. Not sure if it is worth it to ya??

boomer 10-26-2012 07:20 AM

It all depends what you want, but man that looks like a huge project. If you want to restore for history maybe but I would think therre are some much more easier project boats out there. But if you are like most guys we are in this for the fun of working on a project. Good luck

And this is the place i find myself. I like the work and it is the Putt-Putt. I have made progress. I expect another 60 hours I will have killed all of the delam. I have already brought a 42' fishing boat back from the dead rebuilding the bulkheads twice since i did not account for the sidewalls of the hull sagging about a foot on both sides. arg. But live and learn. Point being i have done this before. The big but is that this is essentially a complete rebuild. Glass is curing as I type this. I feel like there should be a 12 step program intervention any time now. HA!

Gotta go turn the heat lights off now.

Yeah! That was awesome. He's on the crew. He handled security and lost steak.

Man i Thought i had bitten off a big chunk with my boat (it hasn't seen water yet so techniqually not a boat yet) but you actually have found worse and are getting to it.....hats off to you bro! Think the dog was already claiming a riding spot when it's all finished!!

Pete280 10-28-2012 02:43 PM

you must be local, I saw that boat, yes you are crazy!

I definitely feel this is going to be a love hate project.

I"m in Suffolk. no work this weekend hurricane Sandy has everything wet. Its a lot of rain when the tide is going out but the water level is rising...

J-Bonz 10-28-2012 04:09 PM

WOW!!!! You are crazy but, I respect it! I love seeing the old race boats brought back... I think you need to answer the question, "Would I ever sell it when completed?"

Of course I would. When was the last time you saw a 'Completed' boat? http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/i...ons/banana.gif

Now that hurricane Sandy has mostly finished I need to order more glass 'n stuff ... I need to really start saving my pennies for the power plants...

khaos 01-21-2013 07:01 PM

Made great progress got almost all of the delam. And i have chipped out some tiger hair I found on a stringer. It was not wel bonded and i will fix it correctly once the weather is about 60 again.

Wow, huge job there, were any of the pics on your website retouched? particularly #'s 2 3 6 9 11 15 16 they seem to make the hull distorted when compared to other pics of the hull.

Wow, I had not noticed that. I'm sure its due to the compression from photoshop's automatic web sizer. I am going to remake the site and I will remake the pics. Thanks for the input.

The weather here is too cold for any glass work right now. I will have the miami boat show to keep me warm in a few weeks though.

khaos 02-10-2013 06:41 PM

Big update

Given that the weather is too cold to do glass work and I want to go to the Miami boat show before I start making my interior and seating. I spent some quality time making the rebuild site better. I have broken the pics apart and I will continue to add sections as I move forward on the project. I have removed all the adobe flash. This is mobile friendly too.

OK, so there are some updates. I have created a mold for the top deck then preceded to mis-read the mixing cup ratio bar and destroy the MDF mold with moisture damage. I tried to clean off the resin with spirits and vinegar. :( the material was already swelling and coming apart from the resin. It was a total loss. I will start a new mold monday. Very frustrating. images at my site.

khaos 11-17-2013 06:13 PM

Trying some unconventional mold material. For the infusion. Getting started with it tomorrow. More pics to follow.

Wow

CraneHillFast 11-18-2013 08:46 AM

looking forward to following more of this. I wouldn't even know where to start after looking at the torched picture of the interior. WOW

khaos 01-27-2014 05:35 PM

Well, I have updated the build website site. All of the images have descriptions. I have to add some of the new mold that I have made. But the site is much improved. The new system uses website structure and builds my slideshows allowing me to just add photos and new folders are added to the brady bunch type front page as a separate 'window'.

khaos 08-19-2014 09:20 AM

I should be glassing the deck transition mold this weekend. New pics have been added to joesboats

scippy 08-19-2014 02:19 PM

The Coyote has beautiful lines and one of the best profiles in a performance to come along in any era ever!...you started at an impossible beginning, but I give you credit for your
steadfast goal to have her new again.....................back from the dead would be an understatement!!

khaos 08-25-2014 02:09 PM

Thanks for the support. :)

Top Banana 08-30-2014 08:44 AM

Congratulations. You have proven to the world that you are a man with real courage in your spirit. What a project, but what a boat you will have in the end.

That boat was one of the fastest of that era. Both the 38 version of that boat, my Top Banana and the very first Cigarette Top Gun showed up at the first USA race of 1979 in California. My boat won and the Top Gun came second ............and it took a whole other season, before that Top Gun could ever finish ahead of the same design you have there.

In the 1980 Bahamas 200 I was leading and the Gun was second when one of my engines started to tighten up and the Cigarette beat me by 30 seconds. That was the first overall win for that Cigarette model ever.

You will be very pleased with your finished product. Please keep all your resto photos as we are building a special section on the HORBA website just for the restos of old race boats and would love to include your work there.

khaos 09-02-2014 10:57 PM

Will do. Its a daunting project. But I just love that hull. I have been trying to get financially creative to get the money in useful chunks. So far so good. :)

Update

asmith 05-13-2016 07:34 PM

I used to own that boat. it was the best rough water boat I have ever been in. If it was rough, you were going to win. It came from a drug auction right before I bought it..When I bought it, it had Mercury 400 cyclones with TRS drives. I put the engines in the pictures in it and rerigged it for #3 drives. The guy I sold it to owned it when it burnt. Coyote are awesome boats. Good luck.

khaos 02-02-2018 01:47 PM

The project has stalled badly. I really need to get on this. Since I started I have had too many deaths in the family.
I need to get a structure built that this thing fits in to protect from the weather and allow me to control temps better.

Another time stealer is that I have been stand up jetskiing. Anyone else notice that time just screams by. I can see the appeal of being independently wealthy. lol

khaos 02-16-2018 10:00 PM

It is a firm resolve that I've decided that I am going to buy a new boat. I have not had the time to dedicate to this project. I thought that I would get the bug to really work on it but that turns out to no be the case. Anyone who wants this project, it yours for the taking. Simply come get the hull. I will likely demo it at the end of the summer if no one wants it.

The last two I built took just over two years each and I don't have that kind of energy anymore. I just want to be on the water.
