So been busy at work and I was sick all last weekend but managed to get some work done this week. I got the transom polished out, man it is easier when there is nothing on it!! And I got some more work started on the engine. You can see my basic idea of what I'm doing for paint now. I have a lot more to do on the engine still and other stuff. Now I am going to focus on all the stuff that needs to get painted because my homemade paint booth takes a bunch of space in my garage. I want to get all my paint work done and take the paint booth down so I have more room to work.

So as I said in my last post my paint work is my main focus right now and I got most of it done now. So I started my engine cover today! Well the pics of it are before I started and the pics make it look better than it is. I must have spent 2 hours today with my Dremel tool grinding all the spider cracks out of it. More pics to follow in the next few days after filler, primer and paint.

Wow I can't believe how crazy the weather is down here in VA! It was super cold earlier this week (along with the rest of the U.S.) So I had to work some long days at work. Last night it was 40 then when I got up today it was 60! So I finished the sanding on the engine hatch but it was WAY TO HUMID to paint!! A storm was on its way in! My garage floor was soaked from the humidity! I never seen anything like that before! I have a pic of the garage floor that was soaked! So I decided to work on getting the new to me transom assembly (thank you baja226sport) cleaned up and ready to go, still have some more work to do on it before I hang it on the boat. Slowly but surely I am getting this boat done!!

Thank you! I also keep finding things to change!! LOL! I bet the AZ weather is sweet right now! This VA weather is crazy but I am not going to complain! I have done more this winter then I did in a whole winter in MI. In MI I would have to take anything out of the boat I wanted to work on over the winter before it was shrink wrapped and then couldn't do anything else until spring. I am enjoying the mild VA winter since I can work on the boat allot more!

How is your project doing?

Borgie 01-11-2014 08:01 PM

Yeah I need to dedicate some solid days, but my 2 year old keeps me pretty busy right now. Just happy the transom is removed, and now time to cut out the engine stringers. Haven't done much the last week or so, but I think I'm gonna go EFI. Been talking with Alex Haxby, and the Holley HP EFI seems like a no brainer. Are you sticking with a carb?

Wow a 2 year old! I could not keep up with that! LOL! The wife and I just have dogs no real kids LOL!. I built my current engine 3 years ago and it runs great so I just did new paint on it, new gaskets, new water pump, new oil cooler, and I will be doing a new intake on it and closed cooling since I'm now in salt water. I don't have any problems running the carb, I had the engine broken in and dyno tuned by Orlandi Performance (brian41) when I built it so I'm not going to mess with it.

I got the engine hatch painted today. I got a new water pump and it was sitting on the work bench awaiting install and it was so humid yesterday that it flash rusted! I got pics of some of the goodies I have been collecting, Garmin 640 which will be in dash mounted, new depth sounder, and the GoPro my in laws got me for Christmas!

Got some updates! Was out own town for work for almost 2 weeks but still making progress. I am not going to use the rear seat/sub panel I made a few years ago anymore. Just made a new basic panel since I want to move the battery's under the rear seat. I am also going to add more speakers and a new grab handle in the next few weeks. I also made the new bottom trim panel for it.

Yep! I started the cabin! I thought my cabin floor was solid because it felt strong when walking on it.... WRONG! I pulled up the carpet and somebody previously pulled the carpet and then just set a piece of wood down on the rotted wood then put the original carpet back. So I had to cut out the rotted wood and fix it correctly.

Man I hate it when others half ass repair stuff! Id like to punch the guy in his suck hole that lied to me about my boat drive not being lose! But at least now you know it's been repaired the right way. Lookin good man. When is your goal for first launch this season?

And then I got rid of the useless sink in the cabin. Storage is tight in a 24/7 and I always had a problem finding a place for the anchor. So I made a custom anchor holder where the sink was, still need to find a good way to strap/lock it down to my new holder. And I made a panel to cover where the sink was and I used a piece from the original side panels in the cockpit.

Thank you!!I hear you man!! This stuff is not really time consuming, the re-rigging and putting it all back together is going to be crazy! I hope to be in the water May or June.

Borgie 02-19-2014 06:16 PM

Brilliant!! Lol I was just talking to my father about this exact thing the other day while knee deep in fiberglass "snow". Who in the heck EVER uses a sink???!!! I mean I could sleep in my cuddy, but I prob won't seeing as it's 95-98 degrees at night during the boating season. Never once used the sink on any boat for that matter.

Realistically I'm shooting for mid June when it's Africa hot here. Also moving in July! But I will be 12 mins from the lake and wife and I spec'd a Supergarage ( can fit a school bus I s**t you not). So timeframe is flexible. You are right, re rigging is not going to be fun and definitely is the most time consuming. The way I see it, all of us on this restoration thread are constant motivators keeping things going. Lord knows I need motivation sometimes!

Are you doing all of your own upholstery? I'm thinking about doing some myself and have a friend from Mexico that does a ton for hot rod guys locally.

Sunrocket24 02-19-2014 06:40 PM

lol! For real who needs a sink on the water lol!! Bring some hand sanitizer if you really need it!

I love everyone's restorations threads also! It does keep me moving when I see yours and all the other threads! Good luck with the move! I do as much as I can in the garage then head to the driveway when it is nice outside! I wish I had a garage big enough to fit the boat in! Not sure how long I will be stationed here so don't want to buy another place yet (the wife and I have two rentals in MI).

I don't do any sewing. Side panels and carpet are easy. My first post has the link to my photobucket from work done a few years ago. I did all the wood and purchased the vinyl but I had a local company sew the covers and then I put them on. I have been using the same vinyl this year and need to find a local company here to sew the sunpad in the next few months.

Got some more work done I took this week off of work since weather was nice!

The new to me transom assembly had the wires for the trim senders cut since he didn't need them, my boat needs them and I was able to just pull the hinge pins and get access to the bolt and replace them with some "pull string".

Then I got everything put back on the transom and the new transducer in.

I haven't posted in a bit so here are some updates. If it stops raining this weekend I will get some pics of the inside of the boat, I got some re-rigging done last weekend. I got my CP order this week so I finished the new dash/switch panels and the rear seat base ready for install, and the engine is ready to go back in. I made the dash panels out of plexiglass and covered them in white 3M Di-Noc, and used BEP Marine switches on the switch panel. Those are really clean nice switches.

So here is where I'm at now. Didn't work on it as much as I wanted to the last few weeks due to either weather, work, or honey do list. I wanted to get some work done tonight and it started to rain as soon as I took the cover off to get these pictures. Got it mostly re-rigged, cabin interior back in, etc. I put some vinyl cord around the hatch blocks so I hope the edges of the hatch don't get beat up as bad again. I took a few days off of work next week so I can drop the engine in and get more done.

Well its getting closer! Got the engine fired up and timing set today, great to hear that sound again! Alternator went out today while running but at least it did it in the driveway. Should have replaced it anyways its the original one. Still got a little rigging to do with the battery relocation, stereo and led lights. Then put the seats back in and a major cleaning. The whole boat is covered in pollen from the spring.

Great work!!! I was reading and perusing through your thread and looking at all the great pictures...and THEN page 8...thinking to myself: "Where is the next page? Where's the rest of his build"

I guess it's --- to be continued....

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the project coming together. Keep with the updates. Good stuff.

Thanks Walter! New alternator arrived yesterday, hope to finish it this weekend and water test it on Sunday. Sun pad is at the upholstery shop. I called them yesterday and they said they are behind schedule since one of thier guys got injured, not a big deal since I don't really need it.

I saw the pictures of your new 288! That is a sweet boat!! I really miss LSC hope to move back soon but I got a feeling it's going to be a long time.
