Marine vinyl ???

What is the difference/reasoning of some vinyls having a thin foam backing and others not?
What's more desireable?

When it comes to forming around corners and such?
Is it more pliable?

The foam backing helps to hide stuff when it's installed, that's what he meant by more forgiving.
