Default Mistress -82 restoration

Last evening I received some SMS messages from Ragman saying that he thought I should post a thread about my restoration of a Cigarette 35 Mistress -82 which has been going on for a couple of years as my hobby, so here we go.

The start of it all was when I saw an ad putting the boat up for sale. I called the seller the same evening the ad went out and talked for quite some time about the boat but I wasn't sure about the deal so I said I would get back to him the next day. So I slept on it and decided to go for it, but before calling the seller I tried to look at the ad again but it was gone. Anyway I called him and said I wanted to buy the boat and asked why the ad had disappeared after only one day and his explanation was that after talking to me about the boat he had realised he didn't really want to sell it anymore so if I didn't buy it he would keep it.

I don't really know the history of the boat but it was located in Spain for at least 10 years before the guy I bought it from took it to Sweden. Finding some old papers in the boat from the early 90's it appears it was located in France at that time, but before that I have no clue about the history.

So here are some of the pictures I got from the seller showing what it looked like at the time of the deal.

And after some time when I had got the transportation arranged I got the boat "home" and here are some pics showing the boat at that time. The plan from the start was to quickly get the hull repainted and put engines in and then have some fun, but the plans have somewhat changed along the way...

If you don't stop me you will get a lot of posts and photos since I have thousands of them showing the different parts of the restoration work in detail.

But here I really want to know the function of this detail. So far nobody has been able to give me an answer to the purpose of it. (Once I get an explanation I guess it will be quite obvious.)

The boat had been standing outside, but under roof in Spain without being used for at least five years before it was brought to Sweden, and if you look at the following pictures from the inside you realise just how much the outside had suffered from that treatment. The pads that had been stored inside the boat were still crystal white compared to the slightly grey/brown hue on the pads that had been left outside. Partly the miscoloration outside had been caused by sand that had blown in from the Sahara desert to the south of Spain.

Thanks for shareing your restoration pics!
The photos in post 5 are what is known as a "Hause Pipe"-it is for anchor line. The fitting comes out when anchoring, when not in use, the weight of the chain holds the fitting down. Not many performance boats have this now-but very common on cruisers/sailboats.

The plan with the project has from the start been to restore her to what she might have looked like when when leaving the factory, but without the restrictions of restoring her to original. Engines was not decided upon when the project started. I knew there had been 400 Cyclones installed, but I wasn't prepared to try to find that so I kept my eyes open for what might turn up. Also I knew the instruments didn't work so I had to find new ones, but I wanted the new ones to look like they could have been installed in 1982 and so on... But I still wanted to keep as many of the original parts as possible if they could be restored without spending too much time or money.

After some meetings and long discussions with the guys who would do the repaint I realized I had to raise the bar considerably compared to my original plan to get the job done quickly. Anyway it was decided that I would strip the boat of equipment myself and then they would take over after that and start the repaint. Here are some pictures from the first day when I started the job of removing equipment. Some of the detail work I wasn't too impressed by. Look for example at the aluminium plates helping secure the cleats.

Thanks a lot for the explanation and settling the issue. That has been one of my guesses but I have (apparently wrongly) discarded it as being too impractical since you would have to drag the anchor up on deck and fastening it to the chain every time you wanted to use it.
