What color to paint new engine?

So as many of you may know, I'm re-powering my boat with a Vortec headed SBC. while I'm getting things together, I figured I'd pick your brains to figure out what color I should paint my engine. I will be installing chrome valve covers and an aluminum intake. I always loved Chevy orange, but that's for cars.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW, pictures are a plus!!

Marine engines are painted black.

Jonesyfxr 11-05-2014 02:00 PM

Is there any certain type of paint I should use over any other?

CDShack 11-05-2014 03:45 PM

Find a color that matches the paint scheme of the boat! Raise the hatch and "imagine" what color would be cool staring back at you. Boats are fun, engines should be as wild and outrageous as the boat.
My boat is red, orange and yellow with black and silver accents. Motors are "electric yellow"!!!

SB 11-05-2014 04:44 PM

All hotrodded sbc's in boats should be all black. Stainless F/A is okay.

A 305/210HP Decal would be great too.

Helps when a BBC boat slower than you is busting your ballz.

:evilb:

Where's ya'll artistic side!!! LOL!
I had a blown SBC (black by the way) in a runabout. Had the jump seats, whole nine yard. Had a small pad on top you could open and look in. About the only thing that showed was the factory square aluminum air cleaner cover that said "Mercury 260 hp" on it. Man I had fun with that boat!

Jonesyfxr 11-06-2014 07:03 AM

I've always been big on making "sleepers." I don't like to advertise. I do have a hatch with a small opening to check things out. This is mine.....

I'm thinking of having the sides of the boat either wrapped or painted black.

Hey now! Now I'm not running a SBC but I was considering powder coating the valve covers Ford Racing Wrinkle blue. It's more of a flat color but it definitely looks like a great marine Color. And the rest of the engine and heads will be done in either Pearl Blue or black with Cast Aluminum Color Intake.

Jonesyfxr 11-06-2014 07:03 PM

^^LOL^^

Now you've got me thinking.....

mysweetone 11-07-2014 06:50 AM

thanks for the "clean" complioment. I just felt the blue from Ford "compimented" the boat nicely so I went with it.

Oooooh, a BBC!! What size?

I was even thinking GM Corporate blue, like what they had In the late 70's and 80's.

This is what I ended up doing on my small blocks. Rattle can Rustoleum engine black with a blue and high temp clear finish. Clear made it durable to fuel. Picture doesn't do justice.

Jonesyfxr 11-09-2014 05:54 AM

What color blue is that? It looks damn cool!!

Jonesyfxr 11-09-2014 07:39 AM

I think I'd paint the whole engine that color, it think it would look great!!

abmotorman 11-10-2014 05:33 PM

Rustoleum Metallic Cobalt Blue (Doesn't like fuel) top coated with 2 coats of engine high temp clear which makes it fuel friendly.

KRAUSMOTORSPORTS 11-11-2014 04:25 AM

When I worked at the machine shop we would always spray our engines usually with heads on (steel heads) and depends on what customer wants but we would always shoot it with base coat clear coat car paint and it held very well. With the heads being on it would sometimes hide that annoying minuet leak. Usually shows after many hours of use of course. But held up great to fuels. It's just a biotch to strip it for repainted on next rebuild. We did this for all engines auto and marine with lots of satisfaction instead of the ole rattle can.

Jonesyfxr 11-11-2014 06:09 AM

Thanks for the input guys!!

mysweetone 11-13-2014 01:53 PM

Did my ford blue SBC pictured on the first page in all high temp paints and primers. two coats primer, three coats paint, two coats clear. Rattle can only. Hope it holds up. Was a lot of work!

Jonesyfxr 11-13-2014 03:48 PM

I'm going to go look at high temp paints. I know there's more of a selection now than in the past.

What color is your engine?

Bondo 11-14-2014 05:35 AM

Ayuh,.... Last motor I put together, I happened to be paintin' heavy equipment 'bout the same time,...
Hence, the Cat yellow,....
Plain ole Rustoleum type equipment paint, 15 years ago,....
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/o...res/f11607.jpg

The motor I'm puttin' together lately is painted Mack, Maxidyne Gold,...
Rustoleum again,...

No need for Hi-temp paint,...

I like anything BUT Black, as oil leaks, if they happen, are easier to see,....

These are a dark metallic blue, they are quite a bit darker than merc racing blue

Thank you! I also did the lettering on the valve covers in those colors also.

I kept mine pretty simple with just black and silver. The silver is all powdercoated. I then pulled the colors of the boat onto the engines using vinyl decals
