Well that escalated quickly...97 heat rebuild
Well what started as an engine refresh has now turned into much more on the ole heat...the "simple" engine refresh turned into a total engine build with a bigger supercharger and all....I knew the backseat had some rotten wood but after pulling it out I quickly found out that I had much more rotten wood in the boat than I thought including the floor, ski locker floor, and both ski locker bulkheads...so my dream of getting her back on the water soon is becoming slimmer by the day...
engine...started with a 525 sc bored .030 over JE blower pistons Eagle rods stock crank just cleaned and polished Dart iron eagle heads 525 efi cam..sort of...went with a custom grind but its really close to the 525 efi cam roller lifters and rockers Replacing the tiny 177 with a 256 blower for now Big to do's for this year Replace all the rotten wood rebuild backseat seal and paint bilge area new carpet reassemble interior if I can get them to load I'll post some pics.....wish me luck!! Stewart |
It's funny how that happens. I can certainly relate! Especially when the OCD kicks in.
|
Yea I pulled the side panels saw the wiring and almost had a heart attack hahaha oh well...is what it is just have to get her fixed up
Talked to the engine builder today and the short block is complete :ernaehrung004: hopefully gonna make a trip up there Monday to check it out and snap some pics |
Also...I need some help sourcing some dark purple carpet for the cockpit..I don't want to do snap in I will be glueing it back down like it was...any ideas??
|
No Boyne Thunder for you
I do like your motor mounts and hopefully the stringers are solid. Good luck on the repairs and rebuild. |
Yea stringers and transom are solid...luckily it was just from neglect and not drying the carpet out so the moist areas took the brunt of it....I'm hoping to have her on the water early june...as long as the money holds out hahaha
|
I feel your pain. I thought my Scarab i'm restoring, only need a bulkhead and "possibly a transom. If you looked a my thread in this section, you know it needed FAR more than that. Good luck, and keep at it.
|
My simple cam swap ended up being a $5k rebuild. That’s a great boat and worthy of love, and I like your engine combo. You should be good for the long haul now. |
Yea thanks!! Feels like a long road to go but hopefully the floor and bulkheads won't be too bad...endeavor...I have been following your thread...you have A LOT more work than me but is gonna be amazing when its done!!
I'm hoping this will be a good build that will last a long time..overall plans include a 6-71 that I have but don't have the scratch to do that this year without selling the 256 which I haven't gotten much interest yet lol Stewart |
Been their still working on it.... That's exactly how mine started, simple motor refresh. Funny how it snowballs from their. Good luck on the build ! Glue in carpet will save a LOT of time. I have corianthian-marine-carpet saved in my favorites, don't know how their prices compare or about the quality, but I saved it for some reason...
|
I'll have to check them out...I'm going to give Nordic a call on Monday and see what they can do for me on carpet..I know heats did come with purple carpet so maybe they can cut me a deal...they were actually very reasonable on their prices for interior work
|
Finally made some progress this past week!! Got all of the rotten wood fixed and all glasswork done...picked the motor up yesterday so as work schedule allows hopefully next week I'll have the motor dressed and ready to drop in...still working on getting the money for the 6-71 instead of the 256 so I only have to do this once but we'll see...I'm no fiberglass expert by any means but this is how I did it and it seems to be solid as a rock now and of course no rot!! don't be too critical like I said I'm no expert lol...still have to paint under the engine and in the ski locker and paint the engine mount before I drop the heart in but anyway...heres some pics

got some build pics from the engine shop...the motor is complete and home but haven't snapped any pics of it yet...but in the meantime here's some motor porn lol

Good job on the floor and I like the blacked out motor! That boat should rip pretty good.
|
What kind of paint did you use on the blower?
|
Thanks Torey!! Thanks again for the lower looks great!!
I used VHT wrinkle finish high temp black...I'll see if I can get a pic of it and post it...need to get some updated pics on here as well |
https://www.vhtpaint.com/high-heat/vht-wrinkle-plus-coatings
heres a link to it..in black obviously lol |
Thanks for paint reply ...
And that engine does look GREAT painted like that .... all business and Bad A$$ !! |
hahah thanks!! That's what I was going for...I'm not a huge fan of chrome anyway but once it's all together with the interior and lights and everything when I pop the hatch I wanted it to look as mean as possible..have a new scoop for the carbs and still need to paint those but I'm hoping it all turns out how I see it in my head lol
|
wow just realized I am way behind on pics lol
|
I do have the new carpet in which you can slightly see in the interior pic of it tore apart I think....the piston, valve, and rockers were all after the first run thanks to the sh!tty head guy at the motor shop but they stood behind it and completely went through the entire motor again, new piston, new rockers, new taller poly locks, and all new ferrea valves with a new head guy since they fired the old one because of this. He never checked the guides before assembly and one stuck causing this so they put all new guides in as well. That's why I didn't get to use it at all last summer by the time all this got straightened out. Just fired her up for the first time a few weeks ago and before I could even set the timing the sea water pump smoked so still waiting to fire it and tune it...its been too damn cold to do anything here in good ole Michigan haha. Anyhow here's some more pics....

And yes all the pulleys will be black as well...just put it together to get her running lol
|
Looking really good!!! If you need another set of hands let me know. I'm not to far up the road from ya....
|
I may take you up on that...I am working 6 days a week 12 hours a day from now until the middle of may...not a lot of free time unfortunately lol

Got the transom pretty much all stripped down to make way for the new steering and tabs...figured I was this far screw it just pull everything fill and gelcoat the whole transom and start from scratch |
What are you planning on doing for steering? Mercury ITS or maybe imco gimbal? Myself personally don’t like seeing holes drilled into the transom for cylinders and hoses...
love the exhaust routing centered above the drive! Now you’re going to tell me you’re changing that... |
Hahaha oh no exhaust is staying!! From what the factory told me this is the only heat in existence with that exhaust...the guy special ordered it to be louder because normally they are at or below the waterline at idle....she sounds mean even idleing!!
I should have gone ITS for the reasons you said and the advantages of the standoff box...Had to go with what I could afford and am going dual ram Latham that I got used from sick stinger...never ran across an ITS gimbal in my price range unfortunately and at this point I do NOT want to pull this damn motor again to change it anyway...however I am getting pretty good at pulling the motor hahahaha |
Yea I thinking that before even finishing reading your previous post that a motor pull is probably a slow Tuesday for you! Lol. Either way you should be able to get it running right. You have to keep in mind that the ITS is 7” of set back witch can add quite a bit of water to the prop vs right off the transom, especially on singles.
|
uuggghhhh I know I know...now I'm browsing for ITS assemblies thanks a lot!! hahahaha
It's really not a big deal to pull the motor especially right now as everything is still wide open lol |
I think what IGW meant wast that when you add standoff, it can add the same effect as placing the drive deeper in the water, so if you go with a bunch of standoff, you may consider a shorty or a raised X. I realize there is some spatial distortion because of the angle you took the pik etc, and it also looks like you have a notched transom (which works as a setback in its own way) but from the angle of the pik you look pretty deep as it is, So a box/its may not be what your looking for.... The its system is a really clean setup though.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...521f54af57.jpg
|
Yea the non stepped heats are really deep x dim wise...I am putting a -2 lower on which I already have but it’s not in the pic that’s just a standard lower...I figure with the shorty and ITS if I end up getting one might work hand in hand...never seen a non stepped heat with a box but I have seen several stepped heats with them which the stepped heats also have a shallow x so that may be why they work on those?? Kinda trial and error at this point...at a very high cost but that’s boating!! Hahaha |
There was a loose formula, but I have forgotten it over time with setbacks, the every so many inches back equals an inch up. A rough guess is that with the shorty you will probably pretty much break even. where you will notice the effect is in trim, moving the prop back changes the leverage point. So you will be able to carry the bow with less trim, which should help efficiency, as the less energy it uses lift the more it can use pushing, I now my boat likes neutral trim on the drive and a touch of tab if I need to bring the nose down, You have to bring that thing over here this summer,,,,
|
That actually may be worth it totally then if in fact it does have that effect on the trim...I have been talking to brett at bblades about getting more bow lift out of a prop at this thing rides pretty wet and porpoises especially at cruise...if I could get some more bow lift out of the extension it may still be worth it even with breaking even in the prop depth stand point...hmmmm
Where do you boat mostly?? I see you're in Toledo....I plan to do some traveling with her this summer once I get it dialed in....I haven't used it in like a year and a half so when its back on the water I'll be like a horny virgin on prom night lol |
