Very nice, Is any engine builder offering this package marinized? Looks like the Cadilac engine.
--- Doug |
Only ones I know of are the Seven Marine outboards. Pair of those might be fun.....
|
Can't wait to see this boat done! IMO most potential buyers that can afford a new offshore power boat are looking for
SPEED 100MPH Unique, set apart from the standard crowd Reliable turn key setup Twin ILMOR MV8570's with Arneson ASD7's, SCX, or SCX upper SC lowers Mercury 565's are nice but XR's are just junk, stock 525s blow bravos daily. Its sad but sooo true. Good luck on the build and keep us updated! |
any build updates?
|
Hull and stringers done, bulkhead installation mostly completed. Deck gel is sprayed, fiberglass and balsa coring underway. Just looked at it Monday at Saber.

Also do not forget any Boat manufacturer building boats since model year 2010 to currently has to install all engine packages with a marine approved catalyst system & computer controller on any horsepower rating 499 and below.

sounds like a good reason for 500+ hp
|
Some airboats have the LSA motors in them. Also some jet power boats use LSA motors
Kodiak Marine aka KEM builds marine LS motors and have done a few LSA motors. also Marine Power has a drop in complete marine LSA engine package 557 hp. also Mast can do this version. Volvo Penta has their GM LS - 6.0L 380 hp and 430 hp cat motors nothing wrong with them and their drives are better compared to the Merc Alpha and Merc Bravo III. I would rather have the new Volvo SX drive than the plain Merc Bravo I if you have some hp in front of it. Also look for Volvo to step up into the 500 + hp range soon. |
IMO, which is near worth nothing, I like the idea of BB Merc. HP, turn key, warranty, sellable or saleable defintely not "sailable", sorry for my lack of grammar and spelling, english is tough. Also as a second the twin smal blocks might be a lot of fun and still all of the above. That rig would be something like "wave hippy" would it not ? , Doug or anyone please elaborate on the pro's and con's of weight verses power and speed as well as cost to operate of the BB-HP single verses the twin SB's. I would think getting around the marina and docking would be easier with the twins ?
|
This boat will be set up for twins. Stock BB Mercs (380 HP) will run 78 MPH. To do that with a single you need serious power and a drive to match. Twin Merc 520 HP should run 90 with a 2 year warrenty.
Chris, you need to stop by and check out this build!! best regards, Doug |
The new 520's are almost a no brainer with the lower price and 2 year wrnty!
Thanks for all the updates! The graphics are looking good, not perfect yet IMO but flashy enough and will still look newer in 10 years is very important! |
I am stopping by the shop Tuesday! I am all for reliable big power! I think the new 520's in this boat would be the ticket!
|
what power is needed to run 100mph?

well doug, looks like a twin to no excuses is the best bet then. serious question, why would a boat run faster with no. 5's than bravos?

Good to see the new build. I have been off line for a while. didn't touch the boat this yr to pissed off. but on one test run I hit 80gps with 30k planes 3/4 the way down at 5000rpm with either one of the 30 or 32 5 blades. it should run to 6400 rpms. that's with DEANs GELLNERS1100 hp motor. Gerry and I have the bigger pulley on it so its a lil less hp now. just paid 2yrs of college and have 2 more. plus wife lose her job at staples as a programmer. they laid off most of them and hired a company from India to hire there people. so phuck Staples everyone. anyway that's why u have not seen anything on my saber. but I plan on either remove the konrad sell it, buy a scx. or see if its worth having the hull straightened out. no rocker and add hook. or just piece it out, . on the new boat did u guys do inserts for your feet. that's next on my plans if I keep the boat. this way u would have wedges to put your feet on . one on floor one up a foot or so. so if your sitting you can push yourself in to the seat. like most of the new boats now. I plan on going maybe a 1/4 to a1/3 in would, that way u still have the head on the left and there's more space on drivers side anyways. that would improve a lot on comfort when driving hard. grafx look's cool. I wish u guys the best. wish I just raised my x and put that new bravo x on there ran it to fine tuned it, then had Pete Nopper marine do his custom build to it. its working on the 31 sutphen ernie has been driving with 950 hp. it lasted 3 pokerrun seasons. a mod xr. well hope you guys raise the x my is at 17'' = about 3 1/2 ''. for a single 8'' on the box. so if you do any singles a 16 1/2'' x should be fine with a 4 blade. I get on plan with ease with either 4 or 5 blades. if I go to a scx or xr I plan on leaving my x where it is. and will give my numbers with a 4 and 5 blade to you guys. I have a stock b1 lol that we will try 1st then order a new drive with what ever length we think is best stock or 1 or 2'' shortie. this way if you build a single you will have info that might help. well congrats I wish you guys the best. ART

it also was at Miami and looked even better in person.
|
We ended up with the new merc 520, the big reason why is the 2 yr warrantee over the 540's 1 yr. We would have liked to use the new ilmor 6.2 all alum but were and still are not released.
|
What speeds are you expecting? Thats a lot of power for a 28!

Nothing for the Saber's, these things are so over built and have had more power in them in the past. Awesome boats! Jon |
Should run 90 or real close
|
I'm guessing 85-86
|
its not how fast you go, but how well you go fast!

Doug, how about a 28 with twin Chevy LS9s, Stelling boxes, 380's and Bravo's. Super light with 1,272 hp. If you want to keep cost down try two LSAs. 1,160 has a nice ring to it too.

Both sound good and I'm sure would run great. Right now 1040 HP w/ 2 year warranty is available to a lucky someone. |
So has this boat been out.... What speeds how does it handle. Do you need to use tabs? Not sure what to do on mine. Part it out. Put a bravo style driver
on it with my 509 650 hp and sell it. It's August and have heard zip on this twin running. |
They are prop testing and working with Merc Racing on a couple of things. It will be a very strong runner. I think Doug and Jamie want to get it dialed in before they start posting numbers
|
ok thanks for info. I had to walk away from mine for a year. theres one of 4 things I am doing this fall. going to have boat bottom worked on either take rocker out and make a pad bottom or a vee keel. see if it helps porpoise. or sell drive set up put a scx on it. or sell hull buy friends Sutphen 33 without trs drives put konrads on and sell my blower motor and 509. buy two 572s..I do regret buying the konrad for this hull. I saw it work on a superboat so I thought it was fine for the saber. I do not regret buying the saber though. its got balls last time out testing ran it to 80 82 for a few seconds to hear the blower whine over the 5'' headers dry WOW. tabs 3/4s down ran smooth. trimed all in to. had 1/3 throttle left. this boat should run 100 or close if I can figure it out. later
