New Saber Boat Build
It's time for some new Saber action. Saber Marine has got things lined up to start a new boat soon. If anyone is interested or knows of some interest point them our direction. If no-one jumps on board right away then we are going to build a spec boat, probably a 28 Offshore twin. What does the Saber Nation think the perfect spec boat would be?
We have been working to update a few things such as interior and graphics to go with the proven Saber hulls. We will also take any current Saber owners boat on trade for someone looking to upgrade. Call or e-mail for more details. "[email protected] " or (616) 837-6666. More details to follow. thanks, Doug Geelhoed |
Great to hear! Awesome boats.
|
New ownership?
|
Great to hear Doug, excited to see a new build coming up. I think you know my dream 28, semi staggered Merc 565 or Ilmor 570's with a 5 man stand up interior and a minimal cabin similar to Wicked Won.
|
"New Ownership?"
No, but have lined up some investment, and I think the timing is right. |
34' short or full staggered with NA Chief 800s and 3a's on boxes
|
a 28 with twin ilmors would be a great boat!
|
Hhhhmmmmm I'm looking to upgrade in a year or two for 31' and up! You now have my undivided attention!
|
28 Saber with twin LS based small blocks!! Like the LS motors from Mast Motorsports!!
Then next... Seeing the love for the Saber 28's I think you need to build another 34 with twin 525's or similar... |

Love the 28 but a 34 with the new 565's and ITS would be pretty bad ass!

Oooohhhh now that would be sweet! I only mentioned the 565 build to be budget concious. Short stagger 34 with Sterling 850's and #6 if I had lottery money...

Keep it simple for a spec boat. Great to see you keeping things going! |

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Always thought an all business 28' like Wicked Won would be the ticket. But take it a step furthur, since power Package's are so much more reliable these days... Whats your thought's on a Single Engine #6 boat like Check300's you did the work on? Power doesn't need to be 1,500hp,..but it could be. But I also think anything from 700 to 1,200 with a #6 would be the bullet proof set up. Still balance well in the CG's and still balance well in the pocket book when compared to twin everything?? Those are all great dream builds....
But for a spec. build I'd stick with the twin small blocks and bravo drives... It will be pretty good on fuel and should post some good performance numbers when dialed in. The other idea for a spec. build would of course be a single 496 with a bravo... But the only thing with a single this size is that you probably aren't going to raise any eyebrows with its performance. You want to plant the seed in their mind and then let the custom builds come to you. |

I think 700 to 1200 hp still extremly respectable and eyebrow raising. 1 less drive in the water, less weight to carry and fuel And this 1,500 turbo is great on fuel, it's never in the boost for your normal driving. If you hit the sticks,...it drinks accordingly at that point. Jon |
Awesome news Doug!! Can't wait to see the next build whatever it is. Jason

Single 710 Ilmor/Indy or Merc 700/ITS would be cool in a 28. I still think twin SBC/Bravos would be best, the Ilmor 570's or Mast 600's for SBC power.
I like the big single/six drive idea but not as a spec boat. |
Hmmmm? Twin SBC/ Bravos. That idea is growing on me. Does anyone know of any boats with those Mast motors installed?

Chris I will take your sweet motors lol if only I could afford them.

I also like the Twin Small Block. Strong, fast, reliable. The bravo based drives should last decent.
IF you go with any big block power in any size PLEASE do not install crappy bravos. IMO more power needs Arnesons, #6's, Indys, etc. Tough to know what will actually SELL and help the company. But IMO someone buying a new Offshore boat is buying it for the sole purpose of SPEED. SO whatever you do it better be fast, impressive fast, still crush waves better then the rest, but FAST! Cool thread, thanks for sharing! |
as much as im loathed to say this, I think anything but mercury power is going to kill saleability. relatively unknown boat with completely unknown power.
remember , one off custom stuff may be cool but you need to think of this from a potential buyers prospective. if im a working man and am going to finance this thing the last thing I want is to have motor issues 3 years into the payment book. |
in my business I buy and build what will sell, not what I like. something done as a spec boat has to appeal to the largest range of buyers possible.
if it was me ,I would build it with no cabin, a three pack and race hatches. and I probably just eliminated 98% of buyers. |

I would go either twin outboards , or single merc 600 sci / illmor 725 to keep cost down versus twin screws on a 28ft spec. boat , your speed would still up there . |
What price range would a 28 with twin small blocks be in?
|
There are a few different ways to go with small-blocks. Merc has a 383 "stroker" package available, rated at 350 HP with EFI, and can be had with a 3 year factory warrentee. A pair of those would make a sweet, no-fuss package. Give me a call @ (616) 837-6666 and I would be happy to give a quote.

--- Doug Any thoughts on some Twin Turbo Small blocks? Fuel injected etc. Low compression, great on fuel, and great power when the sticks are leaned on? Jon |
Twin turbo SBC, Wow!! Tons of potential there, just not aware of a sorted out marine package that I would turn over to a customer, and I don't want to be the guinea pig.
