Purple Haze

Purple Haze is going through an engine freshening adding power and some modifications. Looking forward to summer. More to come!

RSCHAP1 01-14-2020 01:28 PM

Wow
Coincidence...I was just thinking of some of the old Sabers I used to see as I drove past their old location yesterday

RBeyer 01-14-2020 11:36 PM

Looks like we will be adding about 150 HP each motor. Still sorting out parts and configurations but's the goal. Do a little each year and they stay almost like new. It's a great boat!

bigboat28 01-15-2020 09:41 AM

So what will can additional 150 equal?

RBeyer 01-15-2020 11:30 AM

Between 625 and 650 each. I upgraded the drives to XR gears last year and want to keep the drives alive. Will probably install Drive Guardians as well.

RBeyer 01-16-2020 11:31 PM

It was running 88 GPS hoping to get close or hit 100

bigboat28 01-17-2020 09:17 AM

So with around 500 a side it was doing 88???

RBeyer 01-17-2020 09:58 AM

More like 465, yes!

SABER28 01-17-2020 07:43 PM

i think you are going to need more than that. i'm dynoed at 650 a side and run 95. although i have not really played with props.

RBeyer 01-19-2020 02:35 AM

I am more content with reliable than 5 mph! 95 is strong and would be great!

SABER28 01-20-2020 07:23 PM

reliability is my first priority too. i'm sure another 75 hp a side would get me about to 100, but i need to make these things last for along time and not break. other than the bad fuel economy they idle like stock, are not too loud, and never have been hard to start.'im hoping to get 500 plus hours before a refresh.

what i'm really curious about is mph gains through prop selection, drive height, and bottom work. it would great to pick up a few mph without hp cost.

RBeyer 01-20-2020 11:23 PM

I agree especially about drive height. Mine are way too deep. I would love to do -2 but don't think that is in the budget with this project. I was told I could pick up 3 to 5 just in drive height.

RBeyer 01-21-2020 12:30 PM

So just got off the phone with my builder and estimates are about 700 - 750 HP we will find out upon dyno results. We do think we ill use a Drive Guardian for extra security. Anyone using one I have heard great things of them!.

payuppsucker 01-21-2020 12:38 PM

ICDEDPPL has them on his Flatdeck. Johnny and Jason (TeamSaris) use them on their race boat.

How much does a Drive Guardian cost?

RBeyer 01-21-2020 08:53 PM

MSRP for a Bravo Style is $2495

SABER28 01-23-2020 08:49 PM

ever think of running shorty drive lowers?

RBeyer 01-24-2020 09:24 AM

Absolutely, the motors needed some attention this year and as long as we pulled them there was not much point of not completely going through them. As a result not sure how much money is left to do that. Quotes last year were around $8000 for shorty's.

SABER28 01-24-2020 04:06 PM

i need to ask Doug what my drive height is. i think mine might be higher because my hatch is raised from everyone elses i have seen. my padding is the same height as the grab handles. is your hatch raised?

Mine is flush with the sides although I do have scoops for blower clearance.

Made 625 HP each at 5300 89 Octane, looking forward to summer!

Played with pulleys and the tune a little and brought them to 640. Time to put them in and enjoy the summer.

RBeyer 03-19-2020 11:39 PM

Drive Guardians arrived today. Getting closer to assembly. Gotta do something to distract from the insanity!

RBeyer 07-09-2020 11:30 PM

So we think we finally got all the bugs out. Playing with props next does look like mid 90's is going to be it. May need 32's

They were originally Hawk 525s basically a 420 with a 174 Blower. The Dyno sheet we were given when purchased had them at 465 HP Burned a head last year and upon tear down didn't love the build and decided to build them from scratch, we kept the crank and blocks, they are still 454 standard bore and still running the 174 blower went to 3" Pulley for 6PSI, 8.5 compression, ProMax Aluminum Heads, Full roller valve train I will have to post cam specs later. Nickerson did the carbs they are about 900 CFM Daytona Ignition running 32 timing. Dynoed 640 at 5300 on 89 octane. The builds were done by Tyler Crockett.

30ftpanther 07-15-2020 11:19 AM

How much torque did they make ?

TQ was 645

HP and TQ curves crossed right at 5300

interesting fact, every internal combustion engine crosses hp and torque at 5250

well i guess looking at the simply the graph and not the numbers 50rpm is pretty close. That is an interesting fact though.

hotjava66 07-16-2020 10:47 AM

Have you tried running 3 blade props? I know everyone turns their nose up at them these days but as low as the drives are on most 28's they do work better imho. Slip #'s on my 28 were crazy low with 3 blades and they were significantly faster. Yes, you can't hole shot like a drag racer with them but they also had less tendency to porpoise at cruise. Would be worth at least testing a set of old school 31 Mirage if you can put hands on them.

They are hard to find and don't know if a 31 would be big enough and I boat on short lakes so I don't think I have enough room to use run them out. These 32s seem to be a great baseline and should work with a little tweaking. I need 100 to 200 RPM to be where they want me. I understand just removing the diffuser ring will give you 150. It really needs -2" shorties just cant make that work until maybe over the winter. Hard to ***** about low to mid 90's

Yeah thats a nice number. Would keep eyes open for a set of 31's if you can buy right, was told they are actually more like 32's or 33's might be the ticket. I thought hard about shorties, I don't know if these hulls like them after asking around, same with extension boxes. With the rocker built into these hulls you need enough leverage to carry the bow or they will want to hop.

The 32s seem to have gotten rid of the porpoise at low speeds even with trim up. it is carrying the stern well. If it does start to bounce a quick bump of the throttles or a trim adjustment take it right away. Seems to be coming together nicely. I think the shorties would be nice for taking away a bit of bow lift. I would love to try them.

hotjava66, do youknow you drive height? or at least the distance from the rubrail to the top of the transom assembly? curious as mine has the hatch raised two inches so im wondering if my height is raised. might have to call doug.

is anyone interested in a saber rally? the old ones were fun.

I dont have the boat anymore but I can tell you my hatch was not raised and prop shift centerline was about 6.5" below the bottom at drive location using a long straight edge

Interesting, I have a set of 27p 3 blade Mirage props. I've heard of the 29p Mirage 3 blades, but I did not know they made 31p 3 blade Mirage props.

32 4 Blades with a little tweak are the answer, Thanks all!
